NorQuest College’s new Social Work Diploma program
uniquely focused on human diversity, multiculturalism
EDMONTON – Starting September 2, 2008, students attending NorQuest College will be able to earn a
diploma in social work that prepares them for a rewarding career, working in multicultural communities
and settings.

"With an ever-increasing number of immigrants to Edmonton and to Alberta, there is an urgent need for
social workers who are trained to work with a multicultural population," says NorQuest College President
and CEO Dr. Wayne Shillington. "This program is another pathway to a career opportunity for students
including those currently enrolled in academic upgrading or English language training at NorQuest."

The Social Work Diploma program’s unique multicultural focus is relevant to the needs of Edmonton’s
growing Aboriginal and multicultural communities. NorQuest student Rosanne Mustus recently graduated
from NorQuest’s Aboriginal Community Support Worker program and believes social work agencies will
benefit from hiring NorQuest graduates.

"Aboriginal people bring a lot of different life experience to the job of social worker," says Mustus. "I am
excited about the chance to work with people and make a positive contribution to my community."

NorQuest’s Social Work Diploma program prepares graduates for entry positions in social work
agencies and offers them the ability to transfer to year-three of the University of Calgary’s Bachelor of
Social Work program. As a Comprehensive Community Institution, NorQuest College has 23 career-
focused certificate and diploma programs.

NorQuest College serves around 10,000 students each year through full-time, part-time and regional
programs in communities across Alberta. In addition to health care, allied health, human services,
business and industry career programs, NorQuest offers expertise in adult literacy, English as a Second
Language (ESL), intercultural education, Aboriginal education, academic upgrading, and learner supports
for students with disabilities. For more information, visit www.norquest.ca.
