LESSON NUMBER 10 - DENTAL CARE
A SOURCE OF HEALTH AND GOOD SELF-IMAGE
(Follow a dentist's advice if different from below.)
A. Cause of teeth decay and gum disease.
1. Acid-- (both come from plaque, a colorless sticky bacteria
which feeds on sugar and carbohydrates turning
2. Calculus (or tartar)-- them into acid and calculus.)
B. Reducing tooth decay.
1. Diet
a. Avoid sweet, sticky snacks like candy bars, hard candy, raisins, dried fruit,
caramels. Instead eat vegetables and fruit like carrots, broccoli, apples, etc.
b. Calcium is required for growth and milk is an excellent source. Calcium
pills may be satisfactory if a person is allergic to milk. Check with a doctor.
2. Maintenance
a. Brushing
(1) Four reasons to brush: 1. Removes food particles, 2. Physically removes
plaque 3. Oxygenates gum pockets, 4. Massages gums.
(2) Frequency: Brush at least thoroughly once a day.
(3) Bristles: They should be rounded and not excessively hard.
(4) Angle to brush: Bristles must get under the gum flap without sawing;
use gentle wiggling which will not harm gums.
(5) Tongue: Brush it also.
b. Flossing-- It is recommended to floss at least once per day, and when food is
stuck between teeth.
3. Dentist
a. Five things a dentist can do to help your teeth that you can't do:
(1) Scrape off calculus
(2) X-ray
(3) Repair decay
(4) Check tightness of fillings
(5) Refer you to a specialist
b. Frequency--as directed by dentist, or:
(1) Adults -- once a year, minimum
(2) Children -- twice a year, minimum.
