Unit Assessment

Task 1: Scenario and questions (Off the job) - Relates to elements 1-5 and all related performance criteria except 2.2
& 2.4, critical aspects and essential knowledge and skills points 1, 3, 4, 5, & 6.

Scenario 1 - Settling Emily into Care

Think about a parent searching for quality care for Emily, an 18 month old. Karen, Emily’s mother, has just rung your
centre’s doorbell. She is interested in touring your service. Emily is with her. Karen particularly wants to know how
you might cater for Emily’s food needs as she is on a restricted diet due to Coeliac Disease.

1. Develop a list of items you would discuss and go through with Emily's parents as you walk around the service.
What parts of the facilities do you think are important to show Karen and Emily? What aspects of the program
   would you explain?

2. How would you respond to Karen's concern about Emily's food needs? What information would you require?
What procedures would you implement to ensure Emily’s health needs are met? What Changes would the
service need to make to address this individual need?

3. Describe the strategies you would use to help Emily’s transition during the first weeks of care. Describe how
you would reassure her family during this 'settling-in' period?

4. Identify and describe the policies or procedures which relate to the orientation processes for new children and
families. (Refer to the National Quality Standards).

5. Describe how you would communicate information about Emily’s additional need to other staff and families.

    Due Date: see unit outline

Task 3: Workplace performance (On the job)

You will be required to document five (5) positive interactions you had with families at the service.
You will briefly describe your interaction and reflect on each one through the use of work Journals.
You will be provided with an appropriate format. You are required to complete five (5) journals.
Each journal entry must relate to the unit’s elements /performance criteria.

Your overall performance in the workplace will be assessed by a TAFE teacher or qualified assessor.
Your assessor will use the following performance checklist for recording judgements made about
your performance on the job. When using the performance checklists the assessor must determine
whether a characteristic is or is not present or whether something was or was not done to a
competent level.

The assessor may need to ask you questions during or after a task or work sequence in order to:

 clarify aspects of your work performance

 assess your ability to listen, interpret and communicate information and ideas

 assess essential knowledge and skills.

The assessor will also:

 read through any written tasks especially your journals to further assess your competence.

 talk to staff members who are supervising or working with you in order to get feedback about
the your performance on a day-to-day basis.

All aspects of your workplace performance including written tasks will be used to determine your
final performance grade.
