Science 10 Course Outline and Evaluation

Unit I Chemistry: a basic introduction to chemistry
a) Atomic structure, matter
b) Compound formation – Ionic (cations, anions) and Covalent Bonding
c) Chemical naming and formula writing
d) Writing and balancing equations
e) Substance classification: acids, bases, salts
f) Neutralization reactions
g) Chemical reactions and influences of them
Unit II Ecology: this section deals with the environment, ecosystems and their function.
a) Review of ecosystem parts, food chains/webs, producers and
consumers, trophic levels
b) Sustainability – biodiversity, productivity, populations
c) Cycles – water, carbon and nitrogen
d) Factors affecting the environment, ecological problems
Unit III Physics: the use of formulas, graphing and graph interpretation
a) Definitions of physics terminology
b) Displacement, time, velocity (quantitative, graphing)
c) Speed – instantaneous and velocity
d) Acceleration – instantaneous
Unit IV Weather: (if time permits)
a) Some topics will be covered in the ecology section
b) Water cycle
c) Heat transfer: atmospheric and hydrological
Term Evaluation: The final evaluation of this course is
determined by the following:
Tests 30 – 40 % Semester course work: 70%
Assignments 15 – 20 % Exam 30%
Labs/ Activities 15 – 20 % Total 100%
Project(s) 15 – 20 %
Literary Probes /
Homework checks 5 – 10 %
NOTE: The above information is subject to change depending on the time and material
IMPORTANT – Assignments must be passed in on or before the due date.
On the due date they must be passed in at the beginning of the Science class.
