KETTERING PARKS, RECREATION AND CULTURAL ARTS DEPARTMENT
HAS BEEN ACCREDITED FOR THIRD TIME
For the third time the City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department has
earned accreditation status from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies
(CAPRA). The award was announced in Seattle, Washington, at the National Recreation and Park
Association Conference held October 10 – 14, 2006.
The City of Kettering Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Department is one of 59 agencies in the
nation and the first agency in Ohio to be accredited. The process of accreditation, which is to be renewed
every five years, is extensive and focuses on the agency’s ability to satisfy a set of 153 standards that are
elements of effective and efficient park and recreation operations. Kettering met 99% percent of the
An agency’s application is followed by a process of self-assessment. A three-member team of
certified park and recreation professionals review the department’s self-assessment and then visited
Kettering in July 2006 to further scrutinize the department’s operations. The visitation team members were

Derums, Manager of Lee County Parks and Recreation (Florida); and Diane Blankenship of Frostburg
State University (Maryland).
The visitation team’s report was then reviewed by CAPRA, which granted the accreditation to
Kettering at the National Recreation and Park Association Conference in Seattle on October 10, 2006.
CAPRA, the accreditation agency, is comprised of representatives of the National Recreation and Park
Association, the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration, the American Association for
Leisure and Recreation, the National Association of County Park and Recreation Officials and the
International City/County Management Association.
