GENERAL INFORMATION

Aims of the School

General Aims

This Church of England School maintained by the County Education
Authority, serves the parishes of Stoke Canon, Rewe with Netherexe, and
Poltimore with Huxham.

This School aims to provide a happy, caring Christian atmosphere,
where children can learn and develop to the full, supported by close co-
operation between parents and school. As a small school we take pride in
providing a friendly and caring atmosphere in which children can learn
and grow.
We aim to help our pupils develop appropriate skills and attitudes so
that they can make the most of their abilities. Our school aims to be a
happy, friendly and lively place in which the children can learn self
discipline in a structured environment, whilst feeling loved and cared for.
We believe that they should feel secure enough to question and think for
themselves and work hard and experience fun. We believe that every
person involved with this school is part of a team and should be valued as
such. Everyone should be encouraged to care for others, be courteous,
punctual, friendly and open and enjoy their time in school.

Specific aims
      1. To provide a sound foundation of literacy and numeracy.
      2. To provide effective development of literacy and numeracy.
      3. To help pupils gain knowledge and skills necessary for adult
            life.
      4. To encourage children to develop kindness to one another,
            within the school.
Stoke Canon VC Primary School
      5. To develop the ability to think creatively, consider a problem,
discuss it, draw conclusions and act on them.
      6. To develop an appreciation of the world in which we live, and
a realisation of the responsibilities this involves.
      7. To provide a caring Christian environment, together with a
knowledge of the life of Christ and the principles of
      Christianity.
      8. To provide as wide a variety of activities as possible for each
child to experience from which they can develop leisure
            activities.

As a result we hope that children will be able to:-

communicate clearly, and confidently.
learn how to acquire new information and record it.
acquire knowledge about the world in which we live.
learn how to apply computational skills with speed, accuracy and
understanding.
acquire a reasoned set of attitudes, values and beliefs.
develop into contributing members of the community.
develop self confidence and independence.

In order to achieve these aims we work in the following way:
a) Through formative assessment, careful planning, and differentiation
of work in order to build on children’s existing skills.

b) By trying to relate National curriculum work to relevant situations.

c) By providing a range of experiences which help children to make
decisions and become self reliant e.g. outdoor activities.

d) By acting as role models, and by appreciating and teaching children
to understand others points of view.
Stoke Canon VC Primary School
e) By discussing and evaluating children’s reasoning and strategies in
problem solving and open ended investigation activities, and by
encouraging independent thinking.

f) Through our programme of RE and acts of collective worship.

g) By offering a broad balanced curriculum, activities after school and
by encouraging children’s activities both in and out of school.

h) A School Council has been established comprising of
representatives from each year group, who formulate and execute ideas
that will improve their environment.

Teaching
During the time your child is in this school the class teacher will
get to know him/her very well. Parents should contact the class
teacher with any queries regarding work or general welfare. Please do not
hesitate to contact us with any concerns that you may have. Open
evenings are arranged to enable parents to meet the teaching staff in their
classrooms and discuss their child's progress.

Work is mainly on an individual basis, but children also work in
groups or teams for some activities. A document containing curriculum
guidelines is available for your inspection in the school.

Arrangements are made for children to attend acts of worship and
periods of Religious Education. Once every term the Vicar conducts
a special school service when parents are invited to join with the
children. Those parents who wish their children to be excused from
taking part in Religious Education should contact the Headmaster.

If you are at all anxious about any aspect of your child's learning please
come and talk to us about it. If you are anxious, try not to convey your
anxiety to your child but come and share your concern with us. Parents
are encouraged to visit the class teacher and talk about their child’s
progress. The first Wednesday of the month is set aside for this purpose
between 3.15 - 4.15 p.m. Class teachers are usually available during that
time. If this time is inconvenient then please arrange a mutually
convenient time with the class teacher.
Stoke Canon VC Primary School
Special Needs:

Our policy allows for extra help for children experiencing difficulty. We
recognise that for some children this will help them over a particular
problem. Parents are welcome to look at our S.E.N. policy and discuss
any aspects of the provision.

Stoke Canon VC Primary School
Curriculum

At Stoke Canon V.C. Primary School we offer a broad curriculum in line
with national requirements. Due attention is given to each subject to
ensure full coverage of every area and progression throughout the school.
Staff work closely together to plan the curriculum in order to achieve both
topic-based work and single subject teaching. Links across curriculum
subjects provide opportunities for children to learn within carefully
structured topic frameworks, particularly in the early years. More
emphasis is given to distinct subjects with older children.

Children are taught in whole classes, groups and individually,
depending on the nature of the task. Their progress is assessed
throughout the school year in order to identify any problem areas and to
ensure that each child has the opportunity to reach his/her maximum
potential.

More detailed accounts of each subject area are as follows:

English:

Literacy is of primary importance. We have a carefully planned
reading policy which is implemented throughout the school. Children are
taught to recognise key words and use phonic skills.

Reading skills are employed where appropriate. The children are
encouraged to develop a love of books through stories, poetry and non-
fiction. We have a well-balanced, large selection of modern books in the
classrooms and school library. Handwriting and spelling are given due
attention throughout the curriculum. Children are encouraged to be
creative in their written work and to write for different purposes and
audiences. Through discussion, presentation of work, drama, poetry and
story-telling, children's abilities in speaking and listening are developed.
Stoke Canon VC Primary School
Mathematics:

The children work in the areas of number, measures, shape and data. We
plan to achieve a balance in mathematical work which enables the children
to learn essential facts, practise skills, develop
understanding and achieve the ability to carry out mathematical
investigation. The use of computers broadens the children's experiences
and challenges acquired skills and concepts.

Science:

Children study the major themes of Life, Materials and Physical
Processes throughout the school. Due emphasis is given to developing
children's abilities of observation, interpretation, making
generalisations, drawing conclusions and communication. Children have
opportunities to be engaged in experimental work at all levels. We aim to
develop environmental awareness through practical work on the school
site e.g. pond, raised garden beds and animal habitats.

Technology:

Children are encouraged to observe the information technology
available to them, e.g. calculators are used in mathematical
investigations, tape-recorders in English and Music, video cameras for
making their own films and computers for data handling, word processing,
spelling programmes and a variety of educational software. Projects are
undertaken whereby children design, make, modify and use various items.

Humanities:

This covers all areas of the curriculum dealing with man's social
development. This includes History, Geography, R.E. and personal
developments. Major historical and geographical themes are studied
through map-work, visits, reference books, videos, role-play and original
artefacts. The children develop skills and understanding while learning
Stoke Canon VC Primary School
important information. R.E. is taught according to the Devon guidelines
promoting an understanding and tolerance of world religions while
reflecting the Christian foundation of this school. Personal development is
promoted through social and moral education and we aim to foster care
and concern for others through discussion, role-play and co-operative
group work.
Expressive Arts:

This involves the child in P.E., Art/Craft, Music and Drama. Children
regularly have swimming lessons in Exeter throughout the year. P.E.
skills are taught, games such as football, unihoc and rounders are played
and in the summer all the children take part in a national athletics awards
scheme. Art/Craft work is usually related to other areas of the curriculum
but particular skills e.g. printing are also taught. Children are encouraged
to be visually aware and creative and also to take pride in the display of
their own work. Music is enjoyed by all children and they have
opportunities to listen to a wide range of styles, play a variety of
percussion instruments and compose their own pieces. Drama is explored
mainly through English, History and personal development work.
Children in both key stages take part in musicals and drama at least once a
year.

Sport:

We have continued to make the best use we can of the very limited
sporting facilities to which we have access. Currently we are fortunate in
having the use of Exeter University Swimming Pool and the adjoining
gymnasium for one morning or afternoon session a week throughout the
year. We therefore, encourage all the children to learn to swim and indeed
become proficient swimmers. Children have taken part in Amateur
Swimming Association awards ranging from Water Skills 1 to Water
Skills 6 and swimming with armbands up to 3,000 m + and taking part in
Bronze, Silver & Gold ASA award. We take part in a National Award
Scheme for athletics called Ten-Step Award. This encourages children to
Stoke Canon VC Primary School
improve their performance each year. Many older children have also taken
part in Royal Yachting Association awards in Sailing and Windsurfing.
They have also gained British Canoe Union star awards and Devon
County Council’s climbing awards.

We also offer football training & netball as extra-curricular activities.

We are quite willing to discuss any aspect of the curriculum in more
detail. We greatly value parental involvement in the curriculum, not just
as an extra pair of hands, but also if you have an expertise in a particular
area. Please offer to help us in any way!
Stoke Canon VC Primary School
Key Stage 1 Classes:

The three infant classes work very closely together. The children proceed
at their own pace and emphasis is placed on helping each child to become
confident and secure in their school surroundings, in order that they each
achieve their full potential.

Reading:

A basic reading scheme is used in combination with a variety of
teaching methods which are adapted to suit the needs of the individual
child. Real books are also part of our reading programme which the
children are encouraged to take home to share with parents. The
participation of parents plays a very vital role, for as well as becoming
fluent and accurate readers, we want our children to really enjoy and
value books.

Writing.

Handwriting and letter formation are taught formally in both classes. We
also encourage the children to enjoy writing and to freely express
themselves on paper. They produce their own stories, poems and factual
accounts.

Maths:

Our maths scheme follows the requirements of the National Curriculum.
The children learn to become confident and to work with understanding in
basic number concepts and in practical areas. Shopping, weighing,
measuring, solving practical problems, computer work and a variety of
activities help to broaden their experience.
Stoke Canon VC Primary School
Computers:

We share twenty-five computers with printing facilities which the children
have opportunities to use in many areas of the curriculum.

History, Geography and Science:

History, Geography and Science are all approached at this stage
through theme and topic work and follow the requirements of the
National Curriculum. The children are encouraged to be aware of and to
appreciate their environment and are responsible for caring for various
areas around the school, e.g. the tree bank, bird tables, habitat area and
pond.

Music:

The children listen and learn to appreciate a wide variety of music.
They also enjoy singing together and performing their own music on the
instruments available.

Art, Design and Technology:

The children draw and paint creating their own pictures and patterns.
They also design and build models using a wide range of materials and
techniques. There is also a kiln so that clay objects can be fired.
Food technology is also included in the curriculum with the children using
the kitchen facilities.

Physical Education:

When the weather permits the children have games and P.E. in the
playground. The local village hall is used for P.E. for two days a week. All
children are taught to swim during their time in school.
Stoke Canon VC Primary School
Religious Education:

The children have class assemblies, Key stage assemblies and whole
school assemblies in the Parish church; where they learn about the
Christian Faith and about caring for each other in the world around them.

              NATIONAL CURRICULUM ASSESSMENT

National Curriculum Assessment occurs at the end of Key Stage 1 and at
the end of Key Stage 2, years 2 & 6. Our results, once again, were very
pleasing and are outlined below.

Key Stage 2 (an average 11 year old will be on level 4)

                       Level 3. Level 4. Level 5. Level 6.

                         PRE-SCHOOL

Provision

A thriving Pre-school meets on the school premises. Although not
directly a part of the school this facility provides a smooth
introduction to the reception class.

In addition to Pre-school we are currently running a scheme whereby the
older children from Pre-school form a Four-Plus Group one session a
week to prepare them for more formal schooling. (See also admissions
policy in Appendices)

Getting Ready for School

Below are some suggestions to help parents to prepare their children for
school:

Help your children to be independent;

Are they able to...
dress and undress themselves
cope with buttons and zips
go to the toilet unaided
hang up their coats and put their bags away
clear away the things they have been using
be able to say goodbye happily to you
ask a grown up for help when necessary?

If children are able to do these things they will settle quickly and
happily into their new environment and will be ready to join in
classroom activities.
Stoke Canon VC Primary School
Let your child enjoy...
stories, nursery rhymes, books and pictures with you
puzzles and games, for example snap, snakes and ladders
painting, colouring, sticking and cutting
talking, questioning and playing with other children.

These activities will help your child feel happy and relaxed and ready to
start school.

APPENDICES

Guidance on Dinner Money

1) Send in money on Monday for whatever days your child is staying
      to dinner.

2) Put the money in an envelope clearly marked with name, days of
      Staying and amount!

3) Endeavour to send in the right money.

4) If you are sending in money for other activities DO NOT put it
in with the dinner money, it does not end up in the same place!

5) If your child forgets a packed lunch he/she will be given a
school dinner and you will be charged accordingly.

6) If your child has been absent please send in money on day of
   his/her return.

7) If you have more than one child in school we cannot transfer
dinner money credits to the other child. Each child has their
     own account.

8) To pay by cheque, please make payable to Devon County
Council. If you wish to write one cheque for 2 or 3 children's
dinners, please send with the eldest child and give the younger
children a note for their respective teacher, stating what days they
will be staying and that a cheque has been sent via older brother or
      sister.

3. When the number of requests for places at the school exceeds the
planned admission level the priority for admissions will be:

     a. Children living in the school's designated area, with a sibling
who will be attending the school at the time of admission.
     b. Other children living in the school’s designated area.
     c. Children living outside the designated area, but with a sibling
who will be attending the school at the time of admission.
     d. Children living outside the school’s designated area.

 If it is necessary to distinguish between children in a
particular category, priority will be determined on the basis of
distance between home and school as a direct line from the
entrance of the property to the nearest available entrance to
the school. (ie the shorter the distance, the higher the priority)
 Pupils attending a linked Infants or First School will have
priority for places in the Junior or Middle School.
 Priority may be given to the admission of pupils for whom a
particular medical or social justification is demonstrated.
 The admission arrangements may be modified to meet the
particular requirements of a trust deed.

CONCLUSION:
In the event of a child being refused admission to the school, the
parents will have the right of appeal to the School Admissions Appeal
Committee.

SCHOOL TRANSPORT.

Devon County Council has a policy on the provision of School
Transport. It provides, for example, for free school transport where a
pupil of compulsory school age lives beyond the agreed statutory distance
from the school serving the home address. The statutory distance is
defined as two miles for children up to eight years of age and three miles
for those eight and over. To qualify, the statutory distance is measured by
using the shortest available route between the home and the school.
There are exceptions to this policy. Some pupils may be given free
transport even when they live within the distance for special reasons - e.g.
medical grounds - and free transport may also be offered to pupils who
have a place at a school that is closer than the designated school but is
beyond the walking distance from their home.
It is a parental responsibility to arrange for children to travel in
safety between the home and picking-up and setting-down points.
Post - 16 students entitled to assisted transport will be required to
meet some of the transport costs, but those entitled to such transport who
are in receipt of a County Minor Award will receive free travel. No
assistance is offered to students who are over 19 years of age.
Where the Authority is not obliged to provide transport it is the
parents' responsibility to make arrangements for and meet the costs of
travel between home and school.
Where spare seats on the County Council's school transport vehicles
or contractors' vehicles are available, these may be occupied by children
not entitled to free school transport on the purchase of a concessionary
ticket. Adequate warning will be given to parents should the concession
need to be withdrawn.
If parents are unhappy about the way in which the policy has been
applied, the Area Education Officer will be willing to discuss any
concerns. An appeals procedure exists.

The Chief Education Officer has asked that parents are reminded that
where their children use school transport it is a parental responsibility to
arrange for children to travel in safety between the home and the picking-

up and setting-down point. This may involve accompanying the children
on the way to the picking-up point and looking after them until the bus
arrives.
Please ensure that young children are met when the bus returns from
school. It is important to remember that young children are often excited
and forget road safety as they get off a bus. Parents are requested to wait
on the same side of the road as the children alight from the bus.
If children are unaccompanied between home and the picking-up or
setting-down point, make sure that they know and follow the safest routes.
This may not be the shortest. Please ensure that children know the safest
place and how to cross busy roads.
Please notify the Area Education Officer or the school of any
changes in your circumstances that affect your transport needs. Please
remember that it may not be possible to give prior notice of bad-weather
arrangements or vehicle breakdowns.
Parents are requested to impress upon children the need to behave
properly on school transport, to have care and consideration for others and
to remain seated and quiet. Parents will be held responsible for any
vandalism caused by their children.
