Professional Experience
   Canon Development Americas, Inc., Irvine, California, USA
   Researcher in the research division, June 2004 ~ present
   As a research staff member, he has been mainly working on monitoring and establishing
   collaborative research projects between Canon and U.S. research institutes, in the area of
   electro-optical devices and systems. In January 2006, his exceptional contribution was
   recognized by the 2005 Canon Spirit Award, which is one of the highest recognitions
   within the Canon Americas Group.

   Research Assistant in the laboratory of Prof. John D. O’Brien, May 2000~ June 2004
   The primary focus of his Ph.D. thesis research was photonic crystal microcavity lasers
   and laser arrays, in the Micro Photonic Device Group (MPDG) led by Prof. John D.
   O’Brien. In close collaboration with Professor P. Daniel Dapkus’ Compound
   Semiconductor Lab (CSL), he was in charge of the device fabrication and
   characterization for photonic crystal microcavity lasers, including developing fabrication

   recipes and establishing the optical characterization systems. He was also actively
   participating in the design and theoretical modeling of photonic crystal lasers and
   waveguides. During this period, his research activities were supported by several
   research funds from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), Army
   Research Office (ARO), and National Science Foundation (NSF).

   Research Assistant in the laboratory of Prof. X. Y. Hou, Sept 1997~Jan 1999
   His work included building a computerized 8-channel precision temperature controlling
   system for the effusion cells on a molecular beam epitaxial (MBE) system. He also
   assisted the fabrication and characterization of organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs).
   He joined the lab at the end of his junior year, owing to his outstanding academic records
   including publishing a research article as an undergraduate student.


University Teaching Experience
   Applied Quantum Mechanics, Fall 2000, Fall 2001, Fall 2002 (Discussion Session
   Leader)
   University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California
   He was responsible for a weekly one-hour discussion session and office hours for course
   EE471 (Applied Quantum Mechanics). The course is a core Ph.D. course in the Material
   Science Department. Each year, it’s attended by an average of 30~40 undergraduate and
   graduate students from several departments in the engineering school. He received this
   appointment in addition to the full RA (research assistant) scholarship. For all three
   years, in successful collaboration with Prof. Martin Gundersen, the course was
   consistently top-rated.

   Electricity and Magnetism, Fall 1999, Spring 2000 (Lab Session Teaching Assistant)
   University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California
   The course PHYS152 (Electricity & Magnetism) is a mandatory course for freshmen of
   a few science and engineering departments in USC. Because of the high student ratings
   of his lab session, he was assigned to two lab sessions per week right after the first
   semester, which was not typical for a first year international TA (teaching assistant) in
   USC then.
