SERVING THE MIZEN PENINSULA
VOL: 4 WEEK 32 Aug 11 2011 Published every Thursday
MAGICAL MIZEN HEAD BRIDGE OFFICALLY OPENED This is the most simple way to describe the Mizen Head
Signal Station and its new Bridge following its opening on Friday 5th. August. Mizen Tourism Co-operative Society, its
Development Officer, Sue Hill and tall he Committee must have been truly thrilled in seeing the Bridge opened, after the
years and years of hard work that have been put into it which have yielded such success. It’s simply spectacular. Not
just alone the Bridge, but fantastic walkways up over the bridge are truly breathtaking. This Bridge and the Mizen head
Signal Station is a huge boost to the Mizen Peninsula as close on a thousand people are now visiting daily, proving what
a remarkable success it has turned out to be. The boost of this passing traffic can be felt in villages like Goleen, Schull,
Ballydehob, Skibbereen, Durrus and Bantry creating a great spin off for these towns. Minister Leo Varadkar spoke of the
success of the Committee in getting funding for the new Bridge. Leo also spoke to local community representatives
following the opening, This was his first visit to the Mizen Peninsula and he was clearly taken aback at the stunning
surrounds as he stayed on throughout the evening. Fr Alan O Leary and Canon Paul Willoughby performed the blessing
of the Bridge before the Minister cut the tape and officially opened the Bridge. The Minister spent a considerable amount
of time walking the area showing how impressed he was with the whole project. See the Blessing and Opening at
GOLEEN FESTIVAL KICKS OFF TOP GREAT START There was no doubt that we were lucky with the weather as the
Goleen Festival got to a great start on Saturday 6th with the Table Tennis Training Camp. On Sunday with the dark
clouds overhead the Vintage Rally took place with a large number of tractors and vintage cars taking part. Following
this, Mizen Rovers had organised the Route 2 Crook and again this year numbers competing were in par with the high
numbers that were there in other years as over two hundred and fifty people including kids walked or ran; some
enjoyed the magnificent surrounds and more competed with each other. The Charades Final has taken place as has the
Beauty Demonstration. The Pub Talent Competition & the Art Workshop are ongoing. This will lead us in to the
weekend of the year as the Festival steps up a gear and provides the whole community with a huge weekend of free
entertainment with six different music events taking place on the street over a three day period. Music is not all that's on
offer as a Fundraising Swim takes place on Saturday, which should interest all you swimmers. On Sunday the old style
Pig on a Spit will be cooked and local volunteers will dish out loads of hot food to all on the Sunday evening. While this is
happening, there will be Pedal Karting on the street for under 10s and 12s. This will be followed with a Tug o War for
men, woman and youngsters. On the Friday night the kids will have their chance to sparkle with the Fancy Dress
Competition. On Saturday 13th there is something for everyone as the Country Market will take place at the Community
Centre; also Children’s Races, Bouncing Castle and Children's Pedal Karting. On the street that night will be the final of the
Pub Talent competition. Back to the Sunday night 14th the final event of the Festival will be the Head Shave on main stage at 10.30;
this competition is easily explained as the competitors, who collect the most money, will get their beards shaved. The proceeds of
the head shave will go between Goleen & District Community Council and St Gabriel's Schull Hospital. We, Goleen & District
Community Council, Look forward to meeting you at this year’s Family Festival. MC GDCC

GOLEEN GAA They say never judge a man when he falls, see how he gets back up. So it was with the junior footballers of Goleen. Having lost out
to Randals in the county they were back out in the West Cork semi final just five days later to face the mighty Clonakilty at Leap. Goleen again
started well in this encounter and had early points on the board from good possession around the middle. Clon settled and started to find the target
but our lads kept the white flag man busy from play and frees. Then after good approach work came the first Goal of the game for Goleen just
before half time. Goleen again took the game to Clon on the restart and added more scores including their second goal. The game looked safe but
back came Clon to score two goals against the run of play which had the large crowd of Goleen supporters sweating to the final whistle where the
scoreboard read Goleen 2-12 Clon 2-08.
MIZEN ROVERS Last Sunday was an important day for Mizen Rovers club, not on the field but on the road. It was "ROUTE 2 CROOK" day this
being the first one organised by the club it meant many hours of preparation and homework by the extended committee. This was a fundraiser also
comprising of our annual flag day which required many hands on deck. Fine weather was necessary to make both events a success and thank God
we were extremely lucky the day held out well. There was a big increase in numbers with just short of 300 participants and also attracted a fine
crowd to Goleen as the runners headed off through the village. Likewise at the finish Crookhaven was thronged to welcome them home where all
were treated to fine grub, music and entertainment till late. A big thank you goes to all who helped on the day to make this a great day for the club
and the area. Connie O’Driscoll.
