This unit will summarize each branch of the military. The unit will explain how each branch contributes to our nation.

Objectives
Recognize authority figures. Identify each branch of the military. Learn about the different branches of the military. Learn different services to the country that each branch performs. To be able to identify the different emblems for the service branches.

Day #1
Introduce: Military Ask student what they know about the military. Read: The Impossible Patriotism Project Group discussion Development: Why we need the military. What the different branches are. Highlight different branches and continue unit. Activity: Students will color the cover page of the book that they will create about the military. Students will also complete the first page, journaling about what they learned about the military, **Try to have a guest speaker**
Military Facts
The military is controlled by the Department of Defense. The Chief of the Armed Forces is the President of the United States. They are governed by the Military Code of Conduct. The military's job is to provide protection and security for the U.S..
Day # 2
Introduce: Army Ask students what they know about the Army. Read: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie Group Discussion Students will journal what they learned about the Army for the second page of their book. **Try to have a guest speaker**

•The primary function of the army is protect of ground movement.
Day # 3
Introduce Air Force Ask students what they know about the Air Force. Read the highlighted portions of The U.S. Air Force Group discussion Development: Students will complete page three of their books by journaling about what they learned about the Air Force. **Try to have a guest speaker**

Introduce Navy Ask students what they know about the Navy. Read highlighted portions of The Illustrated Directory of the United States Navy Group Discussion Development: Students will complete page four, journaling about what they learned about the Navy. **Try to have a guest speaker**

Day # 5
Introduce Marines Ask students what they know about the Marines. Read the highlighted portions of The Marines Group Discussion Development: Student will complete page five of their books, journaling about what they have learned about the Marines. **Try to have a guest speaker**
Marine Facts

Adaptations for Students with Special Needs
Assist students with special needs in their developmental writing activities. Model brainstorming and writing for each student. If student has difficulty have student tell you what they wish to write, then write it on a dry erase board for students to copy.
Culminating Activity
Students will take a trip to the Air Force Museum. The unit will lead into the next unit about Veterans Day.
Assessment
Students will present their books to the classroom and share what they have learned about the military and the branches of service. Students will also turn in their books for teacher grading.

This selection of vintage posters includes examples from both wars and features designs from various countries including the United States, Germany, Great Britain, France, Canada, and Russia.
