BEST BUY CO., INC. FIELD DISTRIBUTION
“Some of our employees are multiple ‘Employee of the Month’ winners because of the
incentive of receiving another Premiere Choice Award,” says Tom Gustafson, Human
Resource Manager for Field Distribution at Best Buy Co., Inc. “I’m a true believer.
We’ve seen productivity increase since we started with the program.”
Headquartered in Minneapolis, Best Buy has more than 600 retail stores located in 48
states in the U.S. and Canada. The 700 employees working in the field distribution
centers are located in a variety of metro area locations close to stores. They are actively
interfacing with customers, delivering appliances and televisions to thousands of homes
every day. As Human Resource Manager for Field Distribution, Gustafson manages
employee incentive programs to encourage improved productivity and customer service
for these employees in field distribution centers nationwide.
Why It Works:
Gift Certificate Center first found Tom Gustafson through a sales call. After hearing
about Gift Certificate Center’s Premiere Choice Award, Tom decided he liked the idea
that employees no matter where they were located could choose gifts at retailers,
restaurants and other entertainment options that they actually use. They were even able
to select products at Best Buy stores – an additional incentive to employees to use with
their discount. Following a successful in-person presentation by Gift Certificate Center
sales representatives to the management team at Best Buy, Tom selected the Premiere
Choice Award to reward the field distribution employees around the U.S.
“Before Gift Certificate Center, it was always difficult for managers to keep gift
certificates in supply,” says Gustafson. “Now, we offer one award that employees choose
where they redeem it. We have several people who hold on to a number of Premiere
Choice Awards to buy a big screen TV or computer. It really motivates folks to pile up
awards and use them on one big item.”
How Employees Get Rewarded:
Now, when an employee achieves a milestone at Best Buy, managers log on to a secure
web site to order a personalized Premiere Choice Award. Gift Certificate Center does the
rest of the work, ensuring that the employee receives a Premiere Choice Award quickly;
Premiere Choice Awards are sent within 24 hours. Managers at Best Buy Field
Distribution Centers don’t need to worry about administration of the program, but instead
can track the order status online.

After receiving the Premiere Choice Award, employees at Best Buy are able to redeem it
online or by mail. The employee then selects the Gift Certificate Center merchant with
whom they prefer to redeem either all or part of their award. Premiere Choice Awards
can also be saved up and redeemed together for a larger gift certificate.
Employees Love It:
“The employees really look forward to receiving a Premiere Choice Award,” says Tom
Gustafson. “Attendance has improved since we have instituted the program. This is an
easy-to-use program for them, and it’s so easy for us to administer.”
