An analysis of the concordance among 13 US wine competitions.
Professor Emeritus, Humboldt state University
An analysis of over 3000 wines entered in 13 national US wine
competitions shows little concordance among the competitions in
awarding gold medals. Of the 1500 wines earning gold medals, over 70
percent received no award in at least one other competition. In other
words, many wines that are viewed as extraordinarily good by some
competitions are viewed as below average at others. An analysis of the
number of gold medals received in multiple competitions indicates that
the probability of winning a gold medal at one competition is
stochastically independent of the results of another competition.
