Case/project name Employment Contract Dispute

Description: Misunderstanding and disparate interpretations of an employment agreement, led to the
employee terminating employment and pursuing litigation. As an alternative to litigation,
mediation provided an opportunity to share information and clarify the terms and
conditions of the contract. The employee, a company manager and the hiring supervisor
participated in exploring several avenues for resolution.

Section #11: Specific Case or Project Experience - Case #2
Case/project name Workplace Interpersonal Conflict

Description: Two co-workers in a financial services department experienced ongoing conflict over
shared roles and responsibilities. The conflict had escalated and the employees were no
longer speaking to each other and were avoiding all contact. One employee threatened to
quit because of stress caused by the conflict.
Through a mediated process of one-on-one interviews and individual coaching that lead to
a face-to-face meeting, the employees were able to express their needs directly and work
jointly on a plan that met the company's needs, created a safe and productive work
environment, and began the process of rebuilding trust between the employees.

Section #11: Specific Case or Project Experience - Case #3
Case/project name Interdepartmental Conflict Over Interests and Goals

Description: A group of highly independent clinic managers faced growing disagreement with the
financial services staff. The dispute focused on differing work goals and incentives that
drove individual priorities. I facilitated a session that allowed all parties to better hear and
understand each others' interests and concerns; improve communication skills; explore
options and resources to support their individual and joint needs; and work together to
create realistic, mutual expectations and accountatibility.

Section #11: Specific Case or Project Experience - Case #4
Case/project name A New Team Effort Comes to a Standstill over Competing Interests

Description: The launch of a major client offering was not progressing and everyone felt there were too
many people involved and that no one could agree on anything. I facilitated a series of
planning meetings with 15 professionals with diverse professional backgrounds and
departmental goals. By focusing on getting everyone's interests on the table, creating
dialogue and a process to explore options, the group developed agreement and buy-in on
this important project. By creating a place for productive dialogue and disagreement, the
team built trust and common ground. The project quickly began to show progress toward
completion. Team members were satisfied with the work conditions and outcome and the
launch was well received and highly successful.

Case/project name Salary Dispute Between a Long-Standing Employee and the Company Owner

Description: An employee filed a claim in Multnomah County Small Claims Court against her employer
regarding disputed back pay. The employee was currently employed by the company and
had made several attempts to resolve the disagreement without success. The mediation
process allowed both parties to focus on the issue, talk about their continued work
relationship and the underlying assumptions that lead to the disagreement.

Section #11: Specific Case or Project Experience - Case #6
Case/project name Co-workers Seek Disciplinary Action Against Each Other

Description: Faced with growing conflict between two co-workers, their supervisor suggested
mediation and the employees agreed to participate. Through mediation the co-workers
began to understand each other's perspectives and find common ground through their
work. They discussed office protocol and developed an interpersonal communication
agreement that helped them communicate directly about work and customer service
issues. The supervisor also agreed to hold regular staff meetings to enhance office
communication and manage expectations. The results: increased productivity and
                          improved problem-solving.

Section #11: Specific Case or Project Experience - Case #7
Case/project name Helping a Board & Organization Gain Commitment and Move Forward

Description: Following retirement of their 20-year executive director, the organization was struggling to
let go and move on. Communication and involvement were limited. The organization was
also in financial trouble and had to make difficult choices while continuing and furthering
their excellent services. The new executive director sought to re-energize and focus the
organization on creating a long-term strategic plan. I facilitated a process that included
information-sharing events with all employees, facilitating a steering committee made up
of parents, teachers, staff and board representatives and designing and facilitating a
board retreat. The outcome: a strategic plan and implementation plan that had the
                          commitment of all stakeholders.

Case/project name Building Concensus Over Resource Allocation and Diverse Needs

Description: A national company was looking to improve information sharing and communication
among administrators and managers from geographically diverse locations. While each
location had its own priorities and needs, everyone valued access to the groups’
knowledge and experience. I recruited an advisory team of managers, administrators and
information technology staff, each represening their own needs and priorities. I facilitated
a series of sessions in which participants worked together to identify common needs and
design an Intranet site that was easy to use and relevant.

Case/project name Community Members Ask To Be Heard Regarding Land Use and Safety Concerns

Description: Because of escalating conflict among property owners and a belief that County
representatives were indifferent, a public meeting was held involving the County and
interested community members. I co-facilitated the meeting ensuring that all involved had
an opportunity to express their interests and work toward negotiating a plan forward. The
meeting yielded a series of accountabilities and action items.
