Internationalisation of Higher Education:
An investigation into the impact of internationalisation on institutional management at
four universities in England and California
The work is an enquiry into the impact of “internationalisation of higher education” on
institutional management and is a qualitative investigation at four universities within
England and California.
Theoretically exploring the juxtaposition of sensemaking and new institutionalism (Weick
et al 2005:17); taking the position that sensemaking fills important gaps in organisational
theory (Weick and Sutcliffe 203:409). The inquiry is based on the assumption that the
crucial actors in internationalisation are the management professionals working within
International offices (Thullen, Heyl and Brownell, 2002). This comparative multi-case
study approach will compare management perceptions from both arts practice and
research led cultures within a cross national design. Each case will be intensively
studied on two levels, the micro level of the individual and the macro level of the
institution - all within a single point in time.
