Welcome back to the Northern Great Plains and the gorgeous tallgrass prairie we’re famous for! If you
weren’t able to join us here in 2007, you won’t want to miss 2012 – we’re looking forward to a fabulous week of
conformation and performance events and the gracious hospitality once again provided by our hosts at the
Marina Inn and Marina Center.
Although the precise geographic center of the United States is a few hundred miles to the south, you’ll find us
at the place where Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota come together, on a bluff overlooking the Missouri River.
Here everything you need for the perfect National Specialty is within easy reach. Conformation and
sweepstakes, obedience and rally, agility, honor and rescue parades, the two-miler road race, vendors and
indoor grooming w/electrical hook-ups are all on-site. Head a few miles south to Gaelyn Glen Farm for the
Specialty herding trial. All tracking venues are within 22 miles of the Marina Center.
My sincerest thanks to the committees of extraordinary people who have helped with the planning of this year’s

The Marina Inn and Conference Center is right on the Missouri River, surrounded by grass and featuring a
River Walk that meanders downstream for several miles. Conformation, Rally, Obedience, and Agility are on
site or within walking distance. The tracking site is a short drive; herding will be held at a fully equipped facility
approximately an hour and a half from the hotel. The RV park (90 pads right on the river, with plenty of shade
as well as electricity, water and cable TV hookups) is 100 ft from the hotel parking lot. The Conference (Expo)
center is owned by the hotel, and is accessible from the host hotel via a covered walkway.
Call the Marina Inn and Conference Center to make reservations and mention you are with the American
Belgian Tervuren Club or ABTC. You will not be able to make reservations on-line. All reservations must be
made by April 16, 2012 after which time the hotel will release the room block reserved for the ABTC. You can
cancel/change your reservation up to that date. Any cancellations AFTER April 16th will be charged one
This year we have a graduated rate. The longer you stay, the cheaper your room will be per night.
$99 + tax/night for 1 king or 2 queens for 1 – 2 nights
$94 + tax/night for 1 king or 2 queens for 3– 5 nights
$89 + tax/night for 1 king or 2 queens for 6 nights or more
There are suites available, please ask for those rates when you call. There will be a $50 refundable pet
deposit per room, refunded only after final inspection upon checkout.
There is a maximum of 4 dogs per room.
Ex-pens can only be set up in designated, marked areas.

Driving North on I-29 take exit 148 and go over Veterans Memorial Bridge. At the traffic light on the other side
of the bridge turn left on 6th Street, go 2 blocks east to B Street, make another left turn and go 2 blocks north
to 4th and B Streets.

RV parking will be at Scenic Park. Scenic Park is a campground that is next to the show site. It is easy walking

From Interstate 29
Go to exit 147B (South Sioux City, Nebraska exit) follow signs to South Sioux City. Come over Veterans Bridge
and you will be entering South Sioux City and take a left at 6th and Dakota Ave. Proceed east on E 6th St. You
will come to a stop sign at E 6th and G Street proceed straight for about 150 yards on your left will be the
entrance to the Scenic Parks Campground and the Parks and Recreation Office.
From U.S. Highway 77
Go through South Sioux City to East 9th Street and Dakota Avenue. Go straight through intersection and
proceed east on E 9th Street to G Street take a left at East 9th and G Streets, you will be going North, G Street
will end and take a right onto East 6th Street and proceed straight for about 150 yards on your left will be the
entrance to the Scenic Parks Campground and the Parks and Recreation Office.
Hotels In the area of the Herding Venue
Herding will be held at a fully equipped facility approximately an hour and a half from the host hotel. There are
a couple of hotels in the area. Whether or not they allow dogs is unknown.

The Welcome Reception Dinner will be held on Tuesday evening, May 8 at the Marina Conference Center. The
buffet menu will include hot BBQ beef sandwiches, a variety of sides, salads and baked beans. The cost is
$22.00 per person and the reception will start at 6:30 pm. There will also be a cash bar. A vegetarian selection
will be made available at the same cost, but you must request that from the dinner chair.

AGILITY – Deadline April 11
Agility trials will be held on Monday & Tuesday, May 7 and 8, outdoors at Scenic Park Athletic Fields
approximately a half a mile from the host hotel. The fields are directly east of the RV park adjacent to the
Marina Inn. Monday’s trial will be open to all-breeds (Tervuren preferred) and Tuesday will be the official
Specialty Agility Trial. The courses will be setup on grass in the outfields of the Scenic Park baseball fields.
The classes offered each day will be Standard (Novice A, Novice B, Open, Excellent A & Excellent B),
Jumpers W/Weaves (Novice A, Novice B, Open, Excellent A & Excellent B), Preferred (Novice, Open,
Excellent A & Excellent B), and Preferred Jumpers W/Weaves (Novice, Open, Excellent A & Excellent B). We
will also be offering the new time2beat class at this trial. The premium will be posted when available. The

HERDING - Deadline April 11
The official National Herding Trial will be held on Sunday, May 6 at the Gaelyn Glen Farm in Springfield, NE.
This is a fully equipped facility approximately an hour and a half from the host hotel. Entries are limited to 50
runs per judge. Test classes will be Herding Tested and Pre Trial Test on sheep only. Trial classes will be
available for "A" course sheep and ducks, “B” course ducks all levels and B course sheep started and
intermediate. The American Belgian Tervuren club will be hosting an all-breed trial on Saturday, May 5 at the
same location. There will be no food available on-site please plan accordingly.

TRACKING - Deadline April 11
All tracking events will be held Sunday May 6. The TD will be held at the Hillview Recreation Area in Hinton, IA.
This location is approximately 22 miles northeast of the host hotel. The TDX will be held at Adam’s
Homestead and Nature Preserve, McCook Lake SD. This location is approximately 11 miles northwest of the
host hotel, just across the South Dakota state line. The VST test will be held on the campus at Briar Cliff
University, Sioux City, Iowa. This location is six miles north of the host hotel. Limit is 4 TD tracks, 4 TDX tracks
and 3 VST tracks and is open to Belgian Tervuren only. There will be no substitutions for track limits. For all
tests, bitches in season may participate, in accordance with Chapter 2, Section 8 of the Tracking Regulations.

HONOR AND RESCUE PARADES

The Honor Parade & Rescue Parade are one of the highlights each year at the National Specialty. The Honor
Parade and the Rescue Parade will be held on the evening of Tuesday, May 8 following the Welcome
Reception at the Marina Center, at 8 pm. A commemorative booklet featuring the resumes and pictures of
entered dogs will be given to each entrant as a memento and will be available to spectators for a nominal

Per ABTC Guidelines, the Honor Parade is limited to all Belgian Tervuren eight (8) years of age or older on
the date of the Honor Parade and having at least one AKC title or a BAR award. The Honor Parade Committee
may review dogs that, because of a health crisis or similar situation, might not survive to the age to qualify for
the Honor Parade. The Honor Parade is limited to dogs and bitches not entered in any regular or non-regular
(including Veterans) Conformation class. Honor Parade entrants may be entered in Veterans Sweepstakes
and/or Performance events. A Show Secretary, Show Chairperson and any Specialty Judge who has
completed their assignment may enter their eligible Tervuren in the Honor Parade.
Per ABTC Guidelines, the Rescue Parade is limited to dogs and bitches that have been placed through the
Belgian Tervuren Rescue Inc or other rescue organizations and having their status as Tervuren established by
an AKC number or ILP number. All Rescue dogs shall be altered. Dogs that have been “rehomed”, returned
to the breeder and/or through the breeder has found a new home, are not eligible for the Rescue Parade.
Rescue dogs are not eligible to compete in any Conformation event at the National, but may be entered in any
Performance event as well as the Rescue Parade. There is no age limitation.
JUDGES’ EDUCATION SEMINAR - Deadline April 11
This seminar and ringside mentoring is intended for individuals currently judging or applying to judge. Seminar
& ringside mentoring will be held on Friday, May 4th. Cost for the seminar is $30.00, which includes materials

The Annual Awards Banquet will be held on the evening of Thursday, May 10th at the Marina Inn. There will
be a seated dinner as well as a cash bar. Dinner choices include:

We will celebrate our National Specialty 2012 exhibitors and winners as we hear from our judges at a special
reception scheduled for Saturday evening, May 12, in the lovely Monterey Room and Riverfront Lawn at the
Marina Inn. Please join us for an Italian buffet, judge’s comments, and plenty of fun. The buffet will include
Caesar salad, antipasto tray, Italian deli pasta salad, roasted Tuscan vegetables, grilled herb chicken Alfredo,
baked penne with meat marinara, garlic bread, a dessert table and coffee & tea. A cash bar will be available. A
vegetarian selection will be available by special request to the reception chair. The cost is $24.00 per person.

We are delighted to accept donations of new/used artwork, books, videos, training or grooming items, clothing,
jewelry, handmade items, etc.- or make a donation of money with which to buy additional items. The Silent

The ABTC Specialty Catalog has become an annual pictorial. This year, we will again have the beautiful color
ads at the same lower rates of last year. We again are offering to the club members the opportunity of placing
your FIRST Full Page One Photo ad at $65 and any additional ads from the SAME person (Full Page, One
Photo) will be $45 each (see rates listed below). Please don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to show off all

CERF CLINIC - Pre-registration Deadline March 30, 2012
CERF exams will be done on Thursday, May 10 in the Marina Conference Center. You must pre-register for
all exams and a tentative time will be agreed upon. Remember that your dog’s eyes will be dilated and that if
you are participating in Conformation, take that into consideration when scheduling your time slot. You should
arrive 30 minutes in advance, to do paperwork and have eyes dilated (we’ll have forms and drops available in
advance). No refunds will be made. Pre-registration cost for one dog is $25; cost for two or more dogs per
owner is $23 each. Make sure you have your dog’s AKC or CKC registration information available for the

Member's Ed Seminar – Puppy Prep: Tips, Tricks and Games Wed evening at the Marina Inn
You have that new puppy in your house. And you have so much spare time.....Besides the standard activities
for socialization and “learning house rules”, what else can you do to prepare your puppy for future activities
while it is too young for formal classes?
Some of our most successful members have agreed to share their insights, tips, tricks and games that they
use to “PREP” puppies for future careers in Agility, Conformation, Herding, Obedience, Rally, Tracking, etc.
Presenters will include: Dianne Allen, Sean and Sharol Hathaway, Jeanne and Vince Ramirez, Roberta
Whitesides and others. A Q&A session will follow the presentation.
The nominal ticket charge of $5 per person will help cover the costs of preparing handouts and purchasing
door prizes to be drawn at the presentation.

SENIOR HANDLING MATCH - Back by popular demand!
As in 2007, we will again be having a Senior Showmanship Match on Friday, May 11th following regular
judging. This highly competitive event is open to all exhibitors who have “aged out” of junior competition
(that would be all of our regular members!). Sign up will be at the National Specialty ringside on Friday (during
bitch judging). A schedule of classes will be posted then. Start planning your outfit and practicing now for the
competition of the year! Challenge your friends and breeders to enter. Proceeds benefit the ABTC Juniors
Program. Prizes will be awarded. Carey Mabry will coordinate the match and sign-up will be done on-site.
TERV TOSS - New Fund Raiser for ABTC
This year we will hold the FIRST EVER Terv Toss!! Sometime before best of breed judging is complete on
Saturday everyone that purchased a Terv bag will throw their Terv bag into the center of the ring. Whoever
comes closest to the exact center will win 25% of the proceeds from this game!!!!!! Depending on how many
bags we have to sell, you could win as much as $1,000.00!!! Terv bags will be sold individually for $5.00 each
or you can buy 5 for $20.00. Once all the bags are sold no more will be available. You must purchase your

TERVUREN 2-MILER - Deadline April 11
The annual Tervuren Two Miler run/walk has a new time slot in the specialty schedule and will be held at 5
p.m. on Friday, May 11. The Two Miler is a 1-mile course at the show site that is completed by a team of a
handler and a Tervuren connected by a six-foot leash. This year, there will be 5 optional “obstacles” to
complete along the way. Each handler entrant will receive a uniquely designed Tervuren Two Miler T-shirt.
Treats will be provided for their partner. Awards will be presented in various categories. T-shirts are
guaranteed only to those who pre-register.
This is a fun opportunity open to any and all regardless of athletic ability. The entry fee is $20.00. Register on

PARADE OF TOP TEN TERVUREN

This year will feature a Parade of Top Ten Tervuren in each of the following
categories: Conformation, Obedience, Agility, Herding, Champion Trackers (earned within the past 5 years).
Invitations to participate will be mailed as soon as 2011 year-end rankings are confirmed with official ABTC
statisticians. All rankings are based on ABTC points systems. The Parade of Champions will take place 6 pm
during cocktail hour for the Awards Banquet, Thursday, May 8, 2012. Please write a brief description of what
makes your Top Ten dog special, limited to 175 words or less, and send to the chairman along with your entry

POLICY ON STANDARDS OF BEHAVIOR BY ABTC MEMBERS
ATTENDING NATIONAL (AND OTHER) SPECIALTY SHOWS
The ABTC has an excellent history of maintaining its Specialty headquarters and show site in good condition.
Rings, grooming areas and hotel rooms occupied by its members are expected to be left with no appreciable
damage, and as clean as possible, after the Specialty is over. As a measure of insuring that this standard will
be met, the Club, as a matter of policy sets forth the following standards of behavior:
1. No dog should be left uncrated in a hotel room in the absence of the room occupants at any time.
2. Dogs that constitute a nuisance to other occupants of the hotel by continual barking or howling, may
subject their owners to being removed by the hotel.
3. There will be no extensive grooming of dogs in the hotel rooms. Grooming will be
permitted only in the areas set aside for that purpose.
4. No dogs should be washed in hotel bathtubs, and hotel towels should not be used on dogs for
drying them or any other purpose.
5. The external and internal premises of the hotel and show site shall be kept free of
debris and feces caused by the presence of dogs attending the Specialty.
6. The Club will provide a committee to inspect rooms upon member checkout, either
separately from, or in concert with, designated members from the hotel staff. Should any room or its
contents exhibit signs of unusual wear or damage because of the presence of a dog or dogs, the
occupant of that room may be held up to censure by the Club and shall reimburse the hotel for all
damages. Offenders may be censured, held In suspension of membership or expelled from
membership in the ABTC should the circumstances warrant.
7. While the ABTC cannot assume legal responsibility for the actions of individual
persons attending one of its national specialties, it does assume ethical responsibility
for their actions. It will make every effort to assure that any offending person make
redress to the hotel or show site in the event that he/she is responsible for damage to

All members of the ABTC are expected to adhere to these Standards.
The Specialty Committee additionally requires that:
1. Exhibitors are not to bring litters of puppies to the Show Headquarters.

A small, covered grooming area will be available by the conformation ring. There will be no electricity
provided. Space is available on a first-come, first-served basis. There is room for people to set up their own
grooming tents as well. These tents are on concrete.
Indoor grooming space is available in the Marina Center by reservation only. Each 5 x 10 spot can be
reserved for $30.00 for the week starting Monday, May 7 at 3pm. All items must be removed from the building
by 10 am on Sunday, May 13th. Electricity is included. There are 65 spots available, and up to 3 can be
combined together. There is also an indoor dog bathing area in the building. Reserve grooming space on the

CLIMATE: Average temperature for late April/early May is 55 - 60 degrees but it will get colder at night.
Average humidity, 80%. April/May is generally considered too late for snow and too early for tornadoes but
anything is possible (including rain) so be prepared.
