SIR CHARLES PARSONS SCHOOL AND SCIENCE COLLEGE

                                    Health and Safety Policy

Rationale:
The school has an obligation to ensure the Health and Safety (H&S) of everyone who works or
studies in, or visits the building. The head teacher is responsible for ensuring that systems and
checks are in place to reduce all risks. Aspects of this responsibility can be delegated to named
staff.

Aims:
   1. To ensure that all governors, staff and volunteers working students have had the
appropriate identification and criminal record bureau checks required to work with
      vulnerable children and young people.
   2. To ensure as far as possible the avoidance of injuries to staff, students and everyone
else who visits or uses our buildings.
   3. To reduce risks through risk assessments.
   4. To have in place systems that are designed to cope with all foreseeable emergencies.
   5. To create a sense of safety awareness within staff.
   6. To ensure the maintenance of safety standards.
   7. To ensure that staff are aware of the actions to be taken in the event of an emergency.

Implementation:
 The H&S officer is Ann Taylor. She will work closely with the premises manager to
appraise the head teacher of all H&S issues as they arise.
 The H&S officer will make an annual inspection of the school and grounds and report her
   findings to the governing body.
 Teachers will take responsibility for H&S issues in their classrooms. Guidance will be
   available from AT.
 Staff with specific responsibilities for the minibuses, first aid and moving and handling will
ensure that the school meets statutory requirements and follows recommended guidelines.
 Guidance on what to do in the event of accidents or fire is contained in the Staff
handbook and will be updated as necessary.
 Regular, unannounced fire drills will be held and logged by AT. Experience of fire
practices will inform our guidance to staff.
 All electrical equipment, gas appliances, PE equipment, hoists, alarms, minibuses, fire
extinguishers and lifts will be subject to regular maintenance by approved technicians.
 Risk assessments will be completed when specific problems arise.
 The H&S officer will liase with the local authority’s H&S department for guidance when
   necessary.
 All staff will be responsible for following recommended H&S procedures.

Evaluation:
This policy will be reviewed annually following the H&S officer’s yearly assessment.
