1.1        SUMMARY

      A.   Section Includes:

           4.    2R24 Shelving, Food Storage.
           5.    Floor mounted corner guards.

      B.   Reference Standard: ANSI MH 16.1.


1.2        PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

      A.   Seismic:

           1.    Provide storage rack systems, including anchorage, capable of withstanding, without
                 failure, the effects of seismic loads.
           2.    Design storage racks to resist earthquake loading requirements of ANSI MH 16.1.
           3.    Refer to Division 01 Section Summary of Work for seismic-load design criteria.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS


2.1        MANUFACTURERS

      A.   Basis-of-Design Products: To establish the significant qualities related to type, function,
           dimension, in-service performance, physical properties, appearance, and other characteristics
           for purposes of evaluating comparable products of other manufacturers, a specific
           manufacturer's product is named and accompanied by the words "basis of design," including
           make or model number or other designation. Subject to compliance with requirements, provide
           either the named products or equal products.


2.2        ITEM 2R16: STORAGE RACK, SHELF, GALVANIZED

      A.   Galvanized Steel Storage Pallet Shelves:

           1.    Galvanized steel storage pallet shelves shall be assembled side by side in a row. The
                 design of all galvanized steel load bearing components, hot rolled to shape, shall be as
                 specified for design fabrication, and erection of structural steel for buildings, or one of the
                 suitable ASTM designations for structural quality sheet or strip referenced for the design
                 of light gauge cold-formed steel structural members. The design and construction of
                 each load bearing component shall assure that the component is capable of sustaining
                 the minimum safe load specified with a safety factor not less than 1.65. The storage
                 shelves shall consist of steel frame uprights, load beams with safety locks, wire mesh
                 decking, and leveling shims. All components shall be galvanized and designed for use in
                 refrigerated areas. Storage racks shall have the following salient features:

                 a.     Upright Frame: Galvanized upright frame shall be a combination of horizontal and
                        diagonal braces, and floor bearing plates. Each upright frame shall have a
                        minimum safe load capacity of 31,000 pounds. The steel braces shall be of angle
                        channel or box channel. Each post shall have openings to readily accommodate
                        the shelf beams at corresponding heights. The upright frames shall be 30 inches
                        wide and 96 inches high.

     b.       Shelf Unit: Galvanized shelf beams shall be one piece integral welded unit of two
              96-inch length beams, as identified on Drawings. Each shelf unit shall have a
              minimum safety load capacity of 6,000 pounds with a safety factor of not less than
              1.65. Beams shall be 4-1/2 inches to 5 inches by 3 inches and shall be compatible
              with the width of the upright frame.
     c.       Leveling Shims: The shims shall be hot or cold rolled steel with minimum
              thickness of 12 gage, 0.1086 inch and of the same size as the floor bearing plate.
              The shim shall anchor or lock with the floor bearing plate in such a manner as not
              to separate during normal use of the rack.
     d.       Wire Mesh Decking: Wire mesh decking shall be constructed of maximum 2-inch
              by 2-inch diamonds or squares, minimum 2 gage welded wire fabric with sufficient
              14 gage 2-inch width by 1-3/8-inch depth minimum channel supports to meet
              minimum capacity. Wire mesh shall be readily removable and not welded nor
              permanently attached to the front to rear crossbars or load shelf beams.
     e.       Back-to-Back Connectors: Shall be designed to join the backs of rack units
              together to form a double row arrangement. The size of the connectors shall be 12
              inches long by 3 inches wide by 3 inches deep. Each end of the connector shall
              securely attach to any post of the upright frame, at not less than 2 locations within
              the lower and upper limits of the shelf unit attachment by bolts, washers and nuts
              or slip in connectors. Each end shall attach to the post at not less than 2 points of
              attachment.
     f.       Wall Spacers: Shall be used to secure rack units to perimeter walls except walls of
              insulated cold storage rooms. Spacers shall be rigid type, 6 inches minimum
              length, bolted to the back column of each frame in two locations. Anchor bolts
              shall be installed to secure rack units to walls.
     g.       Assembly: Assembled rack shall consist of two upright frames and three shelf
              units.
     h.       Load beam spacing shall be as follows:

              1)    Bottom load beam: 24 inches above floor.
              2)    Second load beam: 60 inches above floor.
              3)    Third load beam: 96 inches above floor.

     i.       The upright frames and shelf units shall assemble and disassemble, throughout
              the height range of the post openings, easily and freely, without the use of bolts or
              tools other than a soft hammer, except for permanently fastening to the floor.
              Assembled rack shall support without permanent deformation or skewing, the
              stresses induced by capacity loads. The beam to post safety lock shall engage
              and disengage without the use of tools. Floor plates shall be permanently
              fastened to the floor.

2.3        ITEM 2R17: STORAGE RACK, PALLET, PAINTED

      A.   Painted Steel Storage Pallet Shelves:

           1.    Loaded pallet steel storage racks shall be assembled side by side in a row. The design
                 of all steel load bearing components, hot rolled to shape, shall be as specified for design
                 fabrication, and erection of structural steel for buildings, or one of the suitable ASTM

                 spacers and leveling shims. The racks are intended for storing palletized loads. Color
                 shall be gray. Storage racks shall have the following salient features:

                 a.    Upright Frame: Upright frame shall be a combination of horizontal and diagonal
                       braces, and floor bearing plates. Each upright frame shall have a minimum safe
                       load capacity of 31,000 pounds. The steel braces shall be of angle channel or box
                       channel with "X" design. Each post shall have openings to readily accommodate
                       the shelf beams at corresponding heights. The upright frames shall be 42 inches
                       wide. End upright frames shall be 96 inches high, and the intermediate frames 96

                 b.    Shelf Unit: Shelf units shall consist of two 96-inch long beams with four removable
                       slip-in front to rear crossbars. Each shelf unit shall have a minimum load capacity
                       of 6,000 pounds with a safety factor of not less than 1.65. Beams shall be 4-1/2
                       inches to 5 inches by 3 inches and shall be compatible with the width of the upright
                       frame.
                 c.    Crossbar Front-to-Rear Supports: Cross bars shall have minimum width of 3
                       inches, depth of 2 inches and length of 42 inches. The crossbars shall be
                       designed so as to fit flush with the top of the beam. The crossbars shall attach and
                       detach without the use of tools, other than a soft hammer. Crossbars shall be of
                       the overlapping, locking type.
                 d.    Leveling Shims: The shims shall be hot or cold rolled steel with minimum
                       thickness of 12 gage 0.1086 inch and of the same size as the floor bearing plate.
                       The shim shall anchor or lock with the floor bearing plate in such a manner as not
                       to separate during normal use of the rack.
                 e.    Wall Spacers: Shall be used to secure rack units to perimeter walls except walls of
                       insulated cold storage rooms. Spacers shall be rigid type, 6 inches minimum
                       length, bolted to the back column of each frame in two locations. Anchor bolts
                       shall be installed to secure rack units to walls.
                 f.    Pallet Stops: Two pallet stops per pallet to be stored shall be provided on all racks
                       adjacent to walls, or where columns or pipes are located between racks.
                 g.    Single Row Rack Assembly: Assembled rack shall consist of two upright frames
                       and two shelf units.
                 h.    Load beam spacings shall be as follows:

                       1)     Bottom load beam: 12 inches above floor.
                       2)     Second load beam: 72 inches above floor.

                 i.    The upright frames and shelf units shall assemble and disassemble, throughout
                       the height range of the post openings, easily and freely, without the use of bolts or
                       tools other than a soft hammer, except for permanently fastening to the floor.
                       Assembled rack shall support without permanent deformation or skewing, the

                       stresses induced by capacity loads. The beam to post safety lock shall engage

2.4        ITEM 2R19: STORAGE RACK, PALLET, PAINTED

      A.   Painted Steel Storage Pallet Shelves:

                       of 6,000 pounds with a safety factor of not less than 1.65. Beams shall be 4-1/2
                       inches to 5 inches by 3 inches and shall be compatible with the width of the upright
                       frame.
                 c.    Crossbar Front-to-Rear Supports: Cross bars shall have minimum width of 3
                       inches, depth of 2 inches and length of 42 inches. The crossbars shall be

                       3)    Third load beam: 120 inches above floor.

                 j.    The upright frames and shelf units shall assemble and disassemble, throughout

                       tools other than a soft hammer, except for permanently fastening to the floor.

2.5        ITEM 2R24: SHELVING, FOOD STORAGE

      A.   Food Storage Shelving:

           1.    Five adjustable open wire shelves, and swivel/brake stem casters. Shelving shall have
                 the following salient features:

                 a.    Stainless steel, open wire adjustable shelving; adjustable in two-inch increments
                       throughout the height of the posts.
                 b.    Shelving shall be 48 inches long by 24 inches deep.

                 c.    Stainless steel posts/upright frame with casters and bumpers. Two casters shall
                       have brakes.
                 d.    An assembled shelf unit shall have a minimum stationary load capacity of 1,000
                       pounds.

2.6        CORNER GUARDS

      A.   Floor Mounted Steel Corner Guards:

           1.    Upright, steel wrap-around rack column corner guard. 1/4 inch thick by 24-inches high,
                 with 3/8 inch thick steel base plate anchored to floor with 3/4 inch diameter double
                 Keystone expansion anchors. Paint bright OSHA yellow. Install in close proximity to but
                 separate from item protected.

PART 3 - EXECUTION


3.1        INSPECTION

      A.   General:

           1.    Check that surfaces to which work will be secured are sound and free of irregularities
                 interfering with installation.
           2.    Do not begin installation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.


3.2        INSTALLATION

      A.   General:

           1.    Installation shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's erection instructions.
           2.    The manufacturer of racks or his qualified representative shall examine the installation
                 and alignment of the rack system. Rack systems not installed according to requirements
                 specified, and as approved by the manufacturer, are not acceptable.
           3.    Touch up scarred finishes with manufacturer's matching color material.
           4.    Replace damaged and defective items.
           5.    Provide corner guards at exposed corners of end upright fames subject to impact
                 damage.
