New Testament Tithing
Tithing is a topic that has being disputed by many; looking at the profound
availability of God’s principles and doctrine; we can safely arrive at the following
conclusion; most Christians are willing to trust God with everything else except their
money. They can trust God to heal their cancers, restore their marriages, save and
deliver their children, keep their country safe but they cannot trust God when it comes
to their finances.
My objective is to bring alignment to the body of Christ and to present the word of
God in accuracy. This teaching will bring immediate financial release and unlock
major opportunity for personal wealth gain. It is not meant to hurt or destroy anybody
but to rather lead you into the truth. The word of God says “My people perish for a
lack of knowledge”; the word I share with you today is to ensure you don’t perish.
Firstly let me share some truths with you; tithing is not a law and you won’t be cursed
if you don’t tithe, it may be shocking but it’s the truth. You may have also heard
people say that if you don’t tithe you will go to hell, this is also a lie. All that happens
when you don’t tithe is that you would become a poor Christian, not enjoying true
financial freedom and stability. You will not drive fancy cars or live in fancy homes.
There will be no money to send your kids to study or it will be a struggle, you’ll shop
under a tight budget all the time, unable to buy the clothes you really like, unable to
go the restaurants you like to go to and you won’t be able to sow into any ministry
even if you are prompted to.
This is a lifestyle description of most Christians today; a lifestyle of financial defeat.
One truth before we move on; it is not our tithing that keeps us out of hell but our
righteousness, no amount of money can determine our destiny with Christ.
I said early that tithing is not a law; you see Abraham tithed to Melchizedek before
God could give Moses the Ten Commandments and the 631 laws. (Genesis 14:18-20)
The principle is there to ignite the glorious power of God and its manifestation is far
beyond the implementation of the law.
The next aspect we need to look at is; what does Christ say about tithing? Let’s look
When they had come, they said to Him, “Teacher, we know that you are true, and care about no one;
for you do not regard the person of men, but teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes
to Caesar, or not? 15Shall we pay, or shall we not pay?” But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to
them, “Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius that I may see it.” 16So they brought it. And He
said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They said to Him, “Caesar’s.” And Jesus
answered and said to them, “Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things
that are God’s.”And they marveled at Him.
When Christ is questioned about paying taxes He brings in; the imperativeness to give
to God in the same intensity you would pay your taxes. He asks for a denarius, now
this coin carried the inscription of Caesar on it. Christ then said give to the
government that which is the governments and give to God that which is God’s.
Apostle Indren Moodley – Tithe 2 Antioch A New Generation Ministry 1
Now we know that governments request taxes of us and that the taxes are taken out of
our salaries before our monies can reach us. Do you know of one person that has
questioned this, I think not.
Governments will take your money and still ask you to fill out tax returns just to
ensure that they were not robbed but most Christians don’t have a problem with this; I
think it’s because their love for their government is too great to be questioned. So
whether we like it or not government will take our monies out of our salaries or wages
based on an assumption; which is you can take my money without my permission.
To make sure they get their money they enforce it as law and those that don’t pay can
be thrown into prison. We need to reflect on the methods this world uses regarding
finances and think about the methods God uses. We don’t go to hell and neither are
we cursed if we don’t give to God. According to the teaching of Christ you need to
pay your taxes and you need to tithe. If we want to accurately following Christ’s
teaching; I’ve got to say: if we are taxed on our gross .income; we should be tithing
on our gross income. It’s something we have to think about.
So we learn two things from Christ’s response; a portion of our finances belongs to
God and we should be releasing this to Him. Let’s look at scripture to determine what
belongs to God.
And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the LORD’s.
It is holy to the LORD. 31 If a man wants at all to redeem any of his tithes, he shall add one-fifth to it.
And concerning the tithe of the herd or the flock, of whatever passes under the rod, the tenth one
shall be holy to the LORD. 33 He shall not inquire whether it is good or bad, nor shall he exchange it;
and if he exchanges it at all, then both it and the one exchanged for it shall be holy; it shall not be
redeemed.’ ” 34 These are the commandments which the LORD commanded Moses for the children of
Israel on Mount Sinai.
A tithe is one tenth, God asks for a tithe of the land (seed and fruit) and the herd or
flock but we need to remember God’s intention for the law. It was to turn slaves into a
nation again. There was a demand for obedience and discipline in every area of their
lives. God looked for their obedience in the area of giving and used it to release
wealth to them. The important thing for us to note is that the children of Israel needed
to bring in a tithe of all their income. So when Christ speaks about giving to God that
which is God’s; He is speaking about the tithe that God requests in the above
scripture. He is asking us to give a portion of all our income to God. Now the way we
do this is to sow into our church of fellowship; we will come to methods and reasons
Another argument I would like to talk about is the income spoken about in
Leviticus 27; it mentions wheat, fruit and cattle. Some people may say our income is
not wheat, fruit or cattle so we don’t have to tithe.
You see our income changes over the years. Let’s look at most recent; a person that
works used to get paid in cash, then it moved over to cheques now it’s electronic
funds transfer. This doesn’t mean that we are not getting an income; we still have an
income but it reaches us in differently.
Apostle Indren Moodley – Tithe 2 Antioch A New Generation Ministry 2
Let me explain further; people harvested wheat and kept cattle for the following
reasons; the wheat would be used to make various edible products; so that they could
have food. The wheat was also used to trade or barter were various items were
acquired, some of which was cattle. Cattle were kept for bartering and for food
therefore if a person had cattle he was considered wealthy but remember; after
receiving this income he would then tithe. A tenth of all income; wheat and cattle
were given to the priest as a tithe. So we now firmly understand that a tenth of all
income belongs to God.
We now reach a point were Christ asks for a coin and we find that money is now in
existence. The introduction of money diversified the wealth progression of man but
we must remember; everything that man has, was created to glorify God. This would
be man’s life, lifestyle, home, children and wealth. So even thou our income
components have changed we don’t stop glorifying God. Money gives us the ability to
be influential and to acquire certain enhancements in life but it should never prevent
us from glorifying God.
Let me explain why money was introduced; rulers needed control and wealth
preservation, so they said to their people bring your wheat and cattle to us and we will
release money to you according to its worth. Now money carried the inscription of
that land’s ruler therefore displaying the power and authority the rulers had acquired.
It gave rulers all sorts of returns; they could keep track of all their people’s wealth,
they could trade with other rulers acquiring things that were not available to them in
their land and they could build up wealth at the expense of their own people.
Amazingly enough, this system still operates today.
If we need wheat or cattle today we don’t barter we use money to buy it. We use
money to buy our food, travel, live in our homes and physically take care of our
selves. Our income component today has changed from wheat and cattle to money.
We don’t work for a bag of wheat but for money and our wealth is not measured
according to how much cattle we have but according to how many assets we have.
Assets can only be acquired with money, so when we analyse tithing we find that the
principle never changed; it is only the seed component that has changed. Our current
income component is money.
Christ also speaks about giving in Luke 6:38. In this portion of scripture we find
several religious ideologies being dismantled and true giving is revealed.
Let’s look at scripture.
Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running
over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be
measured to you again.
Christ takes us into a new dimension of giving; He once again asks us to give but then
immediately tells us that we will receive because we have given. Apart from this
assurance; Christ describes the level and new dimension we will receive at. This is
awesome because no financial institution in this world can guarantee what Christ has
Apostle Indren Moodley – Tithe 2 Antioch A New Generation Ministry 3
We also find Him revealing our delivery method. There is no freight train from the
heavens or money is not going to fall from the sky but men shall release it to us. Let
me explain; money was created by man and is located here on earth. God can instruct
any person to release to you and they will have no alternative but to obey. You see
every man is a creation of God; they however have the responsibility to choose to
believe that He is their creator. This however does not change the fact that God
created all of us. Now God has authority and power over all that He has created and
He can exercise this authority at time He chooses to.
Let’s look at some of the ways in which we could receive; increases in our salaries,
people will sow into us or give us gifts, supernatural release of money from different
avenues, new jobs, promotion at your place of work, increase in business, new
business, discounts and waver of costs without you asking, rebates, high returns,
finding money, bills get supernaturally paid or written off and inheritances.
The important thing to note is that God is true to His word and will bless us when we
give; even if it means blessing some one that doesn’t believe in Him just so that
person; can give to us. Remember the delivery is from man here on earth.
Christ then assures us that in the same measure we give it shall be given back unto us.
Now this opens a doorway into unlimited financial return but we need to give in the
manner in which Christ is teaching us. The tithe is not cancelled but a point of giving
beyond our tithe is presented. If we were to bring in our tithe, we will get a return
according that same measure but if we wanted to receive more; we have to go beyond
our tithe and sow more. This gives us the ability to receive exceedingly abundantly.
Let’s look at giving beyond our tithe.
33 And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great
grace was upon them all.
34 Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or
houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
35 And laid them down at the apostles’ feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as
he had need.
36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, The son of
consolation,) a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus,
37 Having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles’ feet.
We find that in this move of God; the people sold their possessions, lands or houses
and sowed 100%. They brought all their money and laid it at the apostles’ feet, now
we don’t have to do this today because at that time the gospel needed to urgently
reach nations but we need to look at the level of giving that was practiced. It is
awesome; the people broke through into a dimension of giving that Christ spoke
about. Scripture tells us that no person was in lack after they had sowed. So in the
same measure they gave they received. The main reason the people gave in this
manner was so that the gospel could be financed.
Apostle Indren Moodley – Tithe 2 Antioch A New Generation Ministry 4
We give for the same reasons today but we will discuss that shortly. I want to ensure
you that there are people who operate in the same intensity as the people recorded in
the book of Acts. You may actually be one of them; you see we need to bring in a
tithe but if we go beyond this in any way, then we start to operate like the way the
people did in the book of Acts. Let me elaborate, if you sow your tithe and then over
and above that sow a seed to your minister, you now operate in the dimension that
Christ spoke about. We sow in a great measure to reap in a great measure.
Our time of living is special; we live in a time of grace and not in a time of law. The
amount of breakthrough Christ gives to us; is immeasurable so our giving should
always go beyond the tithing principle.
When we look at Old Testament giving we find that the people brought their money
to the priest of the temple; in Acts 4:37 we find the people bringing their money to the
apostle and laying it at his feet. Please note we don’t ever tithe or give to any
institution or organisation; we give to God via His appointed servant. There were no
bank accounts then or registered organisations but the people gave much more then
than we do now, they understood that all of their giving was sacred and holy.
I need you to think wisely at this point, it was the duty of the priests and the apostles
to handle distribution of money; they had to ensure that the temple/church and their
full time staff were adequately taken care of. So when people gave they gave with this
understanding; my Priest or Apostle has been allocated to me by God, the temple or
church is our place of worship and I need my spiritual leader and place of worship to
be functioning all the time. This is to ensure that my blessings are constant and
sustained. So I need to give but although I take my money to the temple or church and
leave it with my Priest or Apostle, in actuality I am giving to God.
We need to adopt the same stand point today; irrespective if church money is banked
or kept in a volt, you give knowing, feeling and understanding that you are giving to
God and that your place of worship and spiritual leader needs to be functioning at all
times. So here is the big question: why don’t people tithe?
I must warn you thou; some of the reasons mentioned are going to be offensive but
reflect on what is said and if needs be rectify those things that are inaccurate.
These are some reasons people don’t tithe:
Pure disobedience: God says give and you don’t.
Jealousy: You think that your minister is going to get too rich or will be
richer than you.
Stupidity: You know that if you sow you will get it back but you don’t.
Lies: You bluff yourself you earn too little to tithe.
Ungratefulness: God gives you employment or income but you don’t tithe.
Apostle Indren Moodley – Tithe 2 Antioch A New Generation Ministry 5
Manipulation: You feel if you don’t tithe then the Pastor or leadership will
Selfishness: You know your giving will help the ministry but you don’t
Unbelief: You don’t believe God will give back to you when you sow.
Mixed Priorities: You become more interested in the wealth of the church.
Demonised: Satan controls your thinking when it comes to finance.
Lack of Knowledge: You think you are giving to the Pastor and not to God.
Arrogance: Why should I, everybody else is probably giving, the church
Something to think about:
a) R100 will always seem too much to give to God but too little for you to go
b) We can give 10% to waiters in restaurants but not to God.
Let’s look at why we need to tithe?
We tithe for three reasons; the first reason is: it’s a principle of God and we need to be
obedient. If we accept the Lord Jesus as our Lord and saviour then we need to
embrace everything that He is.
The second reason is for personal financial growth and stability. When we give; our
financial status starts to increase, this brings us influence. We find that we are able to
obtain dominion in areas of our life that previously could not be accessed. Our lives
start to display prosperity which projects God as a God of provision. In our personal
lives; money will not stall or stop the things that we want to acquire here on earth.
Now there is a lot that we will want to acquire during our life time here on earth but
need finances to see them through. It could be big beautiful houses, fancy cars,
holidays, overseas trips, to dress well, eat well, send kids to university or have money
all the time. Our giving breaks all limitations and opens doorways to ensure all of
these come to pass. Giving is designed to make children of God super rich.
The third reason is; for the forward movement of the gospel. Now the mode of
transportation is our church or ministry, people need to realize this. You see there are
certain things in church that can only be of resource if finances are available; here are
some examples: phones, rent, lights and water, bond, reaching out to the poor,
transportation (petrol or car payments) and music instrument upgrade.
Full time workers also need to get paid (this includes your pastor, they need to eat,
cloth themselves and take care of their families) and finally the availability of your
minister in his or her true purpose.
Apostle Indren Moodley – Tithe 2 Antioch A New Generation Ministry 6
I want to emphasise the affect it would have on the availability of your minister, the
others are self explanatory. You see when there is financial lack at church the onus to
meet obligations falls onto the shoulders of your minister. The minister will now
spend time looking for ways to acquire finance to meet bills instead of being locked
away in word and prayer.
Remember the life of a minister is firstly of spiritual benefit to the people, how is this
going to be accomplished if the lack of finance hangs over his or her head. Your
minister can burn out; this will affect the people more than it would affect the
minister. You see God always uses His servants to lead His people out of bondage and
into the land of milk and honey; now when that servant burns out the peoples move
into God’s promise, is stalled. Valuable time is lost until a point of realisation.
I would like to also make bold mention of the fact that no church employs a minister;
if God has called or chosen him or her to lead His people, how then can the people do
the employing. A minister is a direct representation of God in the capacity of father.
God has employed the minister and will provide for him or her irrespective if people
sow or not. This is personal provision; I am speaking about the provision of the needs
of ministers and their family.
So ultimately it’s the people that suffer when there is financial lack due to the absence
of tithing. I would like to encourage you once again, do not neglect the principle of
giving. It is there for our benefit and for the forward movement of the church.
You must have asked yourself this question; How come there are so few rich
Christians yet we serve such a great God?
The reason is simple; most Christians neglect the principle of giving.
We need to understand that we must tithe and more importantly give as Christ taught
us to give. The three reasons for this are as follows;
1. It’ a principle of God and we need to be obedient.
2. So that we can become prosperous; it is our blue print to become super rich.
3. To keep the gospel and the church in forward movement all the time.
18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is He that giveth thee power
to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers,
as it is this day.
Take care, Stay Blessed!
Apostle Indren Moodley – Tithe 2 Antioch A New Generation Ministry 7
