that has been emailed or postal mailed to each member and also can be accessed via the website.
A motion to accept the minutes was made by Kelly Worley and 2nd Mark Besancon.
Treasurer’s report: Treasurer Sindy Smith gave the treasury report and a motion was made to
accept this accounting by Austin Bradley and 2nd by Paul Shutes.
19 members present plus 3 guest
50/50 – Collected $70.00. Bill Myers was the lucky winner of $35.00 with the remaining
$35.00 going into the FAA fund. Congratulations to Bill Myers and thank you goes out to him
because he donated his money back to the club. So far from the month of Oct…$47.00 and
Nov…$35.00, we have at total of $82.00 collected for FAA.
Guest Speaker: Jeff Lawlor, the coordinator with the division of hunting and game
management youth hunting program of Florida. Our club is very interested in this program and
Mr. Lawlor came to speak about the program and answer any questions that we might have. Mr.
Lawlor gave brochures and showed appreciation to the clubs that participate. Florida youth
hunting program is a program mirrored from the Texas youth hunting and it came about due to
the numbers of hunting permits and license decreasing over the years. A study of this decline
was taken and it was discover that the youths simply were not being introduced or exposed to
hunting as in the past. After several years of this program the numbers have increased or leveled
to the normalcy. Mr. Lawlor explained that the state has opened up lands in Florida for these
youth hunts to take place and also encourages private land use. Since there are several people in
our club that want to be involved and actually become a hunt master, Mr. Lawlor will notify the
club when the next hunt master program is available.
Guest Speaker: Bishop Wright, the president of the Florida Airboat Association spoke
on his recent trip to Washington D.C, to speak before congress about the Everglades Headwater
project. Of course he spoke on our (FAA members/conservationist) behalves to oppose this land
purchase by the federal government. Bishop went on with the reasons why we do not want this
purchase to take place and compared this project to other similar projects of the federal
government which is proof today that the federal government land management practices are
little to be desired. Bishop also spoke on the airboat sound issue and also thanked our club for
getting involved in the youth hunt program.
Speaker: Wanda Szeman took the floor to thank the club for our support with the
outdoor movie project she has going on and that she has set a date for the third movie in the park
on Friday December 16th and will attend the December meeting to solicit for a donation towards
FAA Quarterly meeting – Oct 29th
Danny and Kim attended this meeting in Inverness, Fl. Danny commented on how nice
the facility was at the Flying Eagle Youth Conservation Property. Danny announced that he was
voted back on the board of directors for the FAA for another year and thanked everyone for their
support and reminded everyone that if they have issues or questions they could reach him at
anytime. Bishop pretty much discussed the topics that were discussed at this meeting already.
We have the Remington 870 with 2 barrels. We need to purchase a case which is approximately
$20.00. The motion to make this purchase was made by Paul Shutes and seconded by Jim Bainter with a
unanimous show of hands from the present members. Danny will make this purchase.
National Night Out – Oct 3rd
Kim pulled the trailer, Doug and Michelle Flood assisted with working the booth that
night. $27.00 was made. Fellsmere Police Department presented the club with a certificate of
appreciation for participating in their event.
Family Jamboree – Oct 8th, - Oct 29th
Due to horrific weather the Jamboree had to be canceled on the 8th and the only date that
it could be rescheduled on was the 29th. Due to conflicts with hunting trips, FAA meeting and
general life, the club had a hard time getting members to work the booth. Eva Cruce opened the
booth and Mike Hearndon was able to work the last half with Michelle Flood assisting in
between. Paul popped in when he could. Club booth made $37.00 and thanks goes out to the
members that were able to help out with the booth. Paul Shutes thanked the club for
participating. The Jamboree did not do as well as expected due to the weather which is an
unforeseen circumstance. Paul hopes to see us next year.
IRCAA Poker Run & Airboat Rodeo – Oct 15th
Due to too much water, so much water that it was over the dyke at summer camp where
we usually have our poker run and events, we had to improvise. We pulled the club trailer to
Gracias parking lot and had the poker run the first part of the day. Jim Bainter was kind enough
to have cooked the left over boston butts from the swap meet along with leftover case of
hamburgers, hot dogs, baked beans and slaw, we had a meal. Nick and Holly Kramer showed up
with their cooking apparatus and prepared appetizers chicken wings, shrimp fried steak ect...
Nobody went home hungry. It turned into a fairly good size club get together. We decided not
to have the events for fear of airboats sinking in the deep waters so instead we went on a club
ride. Over 25 boats went west to Surrancy’s dyke and approximately 10 boats went east to the
east marsh. There was enough water we could have gone anywhere and not worry about getting
stuck. It was truly a nice and relaxing day to spend with good friends. Kim suggested that we
pencil in two poker run and rodeo event next year in April and August so we will not impede on
the hunting and holiday seasons.
Membership dues $25.00 are due at the beginning of the year and it won’t hurt for us to
get a good head start on this and pay them early. Also if you are over 65 you have to tell me, I
am a bad judge of age. Any member that joins the club from Oct 1st 2011 on will be considered
a 2012 member. Another reminder, nominations for office / board members are at the December
meeting and voting is at the January meeting.
Next Club Ride
Danny Emmons and Sam Smith are trying to plan the next club ride the everglades area
2. Sam Smith made a motion that we plan this ride for the weekend of February 11th and 12th.
Doug Flood seconded the motion with a unanimous show of hands from the attending members.
Danny and Sam will make arrangements and get back with the club at the next few meetings.
We may be able to utilize a cabin and grounds to stay at. Anyone with any input or contacts
from down south contact Sam Smith at 772-633-1663 or Danny Emmons at 772-473-8703.
Santa Claus comes to town – Dec 14th
The club started this annual event last year and made 400 stockings. Over 400 children
attended. We have Santa on an airboat trailered up and down main street and then brought to the
ball field where he allows each child to sit in his lap an tell him what they wish for and then they
receive a stocking filled with candy and small toys along with grapefruit or oranges. There will
be other organization that will participate with providing cookies and hot chocolate. Kim is
trying to organize this event and will be asking local business for donation to assist with the cost.
Meanwhile Kim made a motion for the club to allow her to spend up to $300.00 if needed to go
towards this event. This event is considered our contribution to the community during the
holidays. Eva Cruce seconds the motion with a unanimous show of hands in favor. Also since
the clubs Santa suit has not been returned to the club, Kim will need to purchase another. Kim
needs someone to wear the suit on that night so if you can please call me and if you can help out
by being an elf (no suit required), please call Kim at 772-473-8696. If you know of any
person/businesses that can contribute monetarily to this cause please call with that information as
Thanksgiving and Christmas Club Celebration
After much discussion at the board meeting the board decided to present to the club a
date to celebrate both holidays. Since everyone has been so busy, we suggested December 3rd.
Doug Flood made the motion and Paul Shutes seconded with unanimous vote from remaining
members. Paul will bring his grill and ask if he could have some volunteers to help with the
cooking. The club will purchase a couple of hams and turkeys. The club asks that each family
bring a side dish. I love when we do this, I can barely walk after I try to eat a little bit of
everything. We will have this dinner in the parking lot at Garcia’s. Maybe we can take a ride
afterwards. This date will be before our next meeting so we need to get organized. Sam Smith
will start a thread on our web site so we will be able to see what everyone is bringing as a side
dish. Kim will send a reminder
Broward Club is having a youth hunt at Grassy Island in Okeechobee November 11th,
12 and 13th. Broward has invited our club to fill two or three youth openings and hunt guide
slots. Sam Smith was able to coordinate this and the end result is Doug Flood and his daughter
along with Mark Besancon with his son. Sam will be going as a guide and Danny has been
asked to go to take pictures of the event. Have fun and good luck to all.
St Johns River Water Management District – unknown date in Feb in Indian River
Keep up with what is going on in your back yard. October 13th is a scheduled meeting.
Interesting website and I encourage you to become familiar with it. Also the names of the region
board member(s). Southern Recreational Public Meeting. Brevard County Government
Center, County Commission Chambers Room, Building C, 1st Floor, 2725 Judge Fran Jamieson
Way, Viera, FL. Web site is www.sjr.state.fl.us.
Trail clean up
As mentioned in previous meetings, about the club getting together to trim some brush
from trails and blind corners and intersections in the marsh. It was thought that it would be
easier to do this after a couple of cold spells. A date of January 14th has been set. Danny will
call St. Johns to have them start submitting the permits for this date.
Osceola Airboat Club Russell House Event
Osceola Airboat club will be having Santa come in on airboat to East Lake Fish Camp to
see the Children from the Russell House Orphanage. This is an annual event in which I have
attended the last three years. This event is worth attending and you do not have to bring an
airboat to attend if you don’t want to. The children faces light up when they see Santa on his
airboat. Again worth attending if you can.
Laptop computer and printer for Treasurer
Danny reminded everyone of previous conversations in reference to purchasing laptop
computer for the treasurer and secretary along with printer. At this time we are seeking one
computer and printer for treasurer. This computer can be shared between the two until we can
afford another one. According to the by-laws, both the treasurer and secretary have to keep their
reports electronically (computer). Kim and Sindy will be shopping and hope to come across a
deal during the holiday sales. Mark Besancon made a motion to allow up to $600.00 to purchase
a laptop and printer. Danny Judah seconded the motion with a majority vote from the club.
Wanda Szeman request to know if the club was going to select a scholarship recipient
from within the club as in the past or if we will be going outside the club this year. If we go
outside the club she needs to obtain paper work from the high school. The club chose to stay
within the club.
Purchase another club trailer
The direction of this club will include numerous youth hunts for the youths in Indian
River County. The youth hunt program requires the host (IRCAA) to supply and prepared the
food during the entire three day weekend for the youths, parents, guides and guest. The state
reimburses the club for the cost of the food. We have a club member (Ray Goodman) who has a
16 or 18 foot trailer with air and he will let the club purchase for $1000.00. This trailer will be
set up as a cook trailer. Trailer will contain all supplies and equipment for food preparation and
serving. This trailer will also be used at our annual swap meet and any other function if needed.
Paul Shutes made a motion to purse the trailer for $1000.00 with Sam Smith seconding this
motion. Club vote was unanimous with the exception of Bill Voges and Buddy Hancock.
Apparently these two members have had their eye on this trailer for some time. They added a
clause to the motion that if we don’t want it the will take it off our hands. Sorry guys, better luck
locating another one. Kim suggested that we give Ray a check for $500.00 now and after the
frog leg festival we can pay him off with the remaining $500.00. In the near future we need to
get some members of the club together to decide how we want to design the trailer.
Theft of club money
It was determined the incident/crime occurred at the Family Jamboree. The amount is
$155.00 from a bank bag in the filing cabinet. Suspect(s) are unknown. From this incident the
board members have decided that when the trailer is at events there will be at least 1 board
member with it. The burden of responsibility will be on that board member and that
responsibility was assumed from that board member when they were nominated for that position.
It is not fair to ask the members to be responsible or to be burdened with the problems that are
associated with security, criminal and liability issues.
The duo from Okeechobee, Bill Voges and Buddy Hancock advised that Ducks
Unlimited are starting another chapter in their county and are having a fund raiser at the
Okeechobee Shiners on Nov 16th, Wednesday night. $75.00 a plate and there will be drawings
