Trip Report:
April 21 Fundy Paddling Club Trip on the Upper Kennebecasis River
Date: April 21,2012
Place: Kennebecasis River
People: 12
Canoes: 4
Kayaks: 5
The group met at the back of the Sussex Sobeys at 9:30am. Due to wind levels it was
decided to move the take out at the bridge on Smiths Creek Road (Route 890 - near the
Blue Bird restaurant) to avoid the open windy area. Shuttle cars were left at the take out
and boats were taken to the bridge on the McCully Station Road.
We were on the water at 10:30am with 12 paddlers (4 canoes and 5 kayaks). The
current was swift with some overhanging trees and sweepers. The river was fairly narrow
( 25ft) in places. At about 11am one canoe dumped with two people going into the water
up to their chests. The water temperature was measured at 9C so it was a cold dip. One
person had on a wet suit and the other had to change into dry clothes. Fortunately
Maurice had brought the dunk kit and it was the first time it was used. Tarps we set up to
change clothes out of the wind.
Back on the water and at a tree across the river by 10:45am. Portaged around tree and
stopped for lunch. Back on the water and following the very twisty channels and oxbows
to Plumsweep at 1:20pm.
A few birds were sighted including geese, ducks, and kingfishers. Carolyn spotted a
Canada goose on a nest on a side channel. One porcupine was seen along the bank and
there were plenty of beaver signs.
The river was fairly sheltered from the wind but sections of the oxbows had it in our
faces. We arrived at the takeout at 3:30pm after a great day on the water. Total distance
travelled was about 15km (9mi).
