school, while only one-third of adults would be vaccinated themselves. "I don't think I am going to die from the swine
flu," says Seattle truck driver Luis Gonzalez, 40, who adds that “neither he, his wife nor their three children ever have
had a flu shot or caught influenza”. He's far from alone. The poll shows 56 percent of Americans aren't worried that

New Community Resource Available to Help Decision-makers Choose Cost Effective Substance Abuse
Prevention Programs
Communities can better develop comprehensive prevention strategies based on their unique needs and
characteristics and use cost-benefit ratios to help guide their decisions with the help of a new publication recently
released by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Substance Abuse Prevention Dollars
and Cents: A Cost Benefits Analysis is designed to help policymakers and other stakeholders use the results of cost-
benefit analysis as an information tool for decision making and for selecting the substance abuse prevention
programs that best apply available resources toward addressing their needs. The report summarizes existing
estimates of the costs of substance abuse and its damaging consequences and how these costs may be avoided by
early prevention programs. The Substance Abuse Prevention Dollars and Cents: A Cost Benefits Analysis is

Comprehensive Policies, Reports, Research and Resources:
Local School Wellness Policies: How Are Schools Implementing the Congressional Mandate?
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has published a brief summarizing results of the preliminary evidence on the
implementation of local school wellness policies. The brief presents data in three key areas: quality, evaluation and
funding of the policies; nutrition standards and nutrition education requirements; and physical activity requirements.
While many of the published studies include school districts from across the nation, it is not clear that they accurately
represent national data or trends. This brief will be updated as more evidence about the implementation and impact
of these policies becomes available. Access the brief at
www.rwjf.org/files/research/20090622localschoolwellness.pdf.
