From the Vicarage
I’m writing this following the visit of the Archbishop Rowan to the Benefice to celebrate and to preach on Sunday
12th February. The Baptist Fellowship with Pastor Colin Patience joined us, which was a pleasure as there are so
many activities which we are engaged in together. Do take a look at the pictures which Tony Bentham took, which
are on http://www.villageyak.co.uk - Once on the website Archbishop will bring up the photos. For the 110 plus
people who were there it was a real celebration and an opportunity to speak with the Archbishop and pose for
photos! I was told by Dick Salmon, our churchwarden, that this was the first time an Archbishop had visited the
Benefice. As we go into the season of Lent (purple on the altar and on my stole) we enter a time of reflection and
anticipation of all that Easter means. The realities of life mean that we have to cope with both joyful and troubling
times and like the weather we cannot choose when to have the sunshine or the storms. There are many who look
back on past Lents as being the time they were exhorted to ‘give up’ sweets, chocolates and biscuits. It took me a
long time to understand what giving up sweets had to do with Easter. Did it mean a bigger Easter Egg or more of
them? I have to say that as far as Bob the Bischon is concerned the last thing he would ever do is give up any item
of food, in fact if you do give up sweets, chocolate, cakes, he’ll eat them for you! But maybe we should be thinking
of doing something extra, taking the children out for a nature ramble rather than sitting on the computer; doing a
regular stint in a charity shop or taking an elderly neighbour shopping. We shall be looking at environmental issues
as our bible study for Lent and it may well provoke us to consider how we can better protect the beautiful
environment in which we live. We all of us need to take time to reflect on our life style and consider the choices we
have. If you need Bob’s help just let me know! Sue White. 01303 240539
Capel Church Hall Re-Building Fund
Work is still proceeding on the Hall and already it is looking much more modern and will be warmer and more comfortable, and Stage
1 should be finished by this time next month.
We do however still need to raise more funds to complete stage 2, which will be to build on a new storage room and other work which
is still required, so we still need your support. Our programme of events and speakers for 2012 starts on:
Friday 9th of March, with Keith Radford, at 7.30pm in St Radigunds Church, Albany Road. Anyone who came last year for his talk
on Gershwin & Cole Porter etc, or has heard him speak on the History of The Musicals, will know what a good speaker he is and he
plays the music he is talking about. He has a new talk for us entitled 'A History of Pop(ular) Music From Victoria to Rock n' Roll
which will include music from Olde Thyme Music Hall; Gilbert & Sullivan; The Jazz era, The Big Band Swing era; WW 2; and on to
the 50's. It promises to be a really good evening, and you get a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit.
Then on Friday 13th of April, We have a fascinating, unique talk by Paddy Lawrence entitled 'Six years spent on one of the
Worlds Remotest Islands Christmas Island in The Central Pacific'. Discovered by Captain Cook and currently threatened by
rising sea levels. (This talk will be supported by an exhibition of the stamps of Kiribati so bring your glasses if you need them).
11th May - Lt Col Mike Martin – To Australia with Capt Cook- and then the convicts. We had to have him back again to present another of his
marvellous talks. 8th June – David McCarthy (UK Representative of The International Al Jolson Society) - Introducing ‘The Worlds
Greatest Entertainer’ - The First World Superstar (You Ain’t Heard Nothing Yet!). 13th July – Captain Peter Russell – (Trinity House
Pilot) – Capel to Captain – A lifetime at sea come and hear how a local lad made good! 15th September Saturday – Snowdon Male Voice Choir
(tickets £10). 12th October – Days Gone By – Songs of the 60’s – Back again for their 3rd year by enormous popular request (tickets £7)
9th November – Revd Canon Gill Calver – (Mother, Rector, Queens Chaplain, Canon of Canterbury Cathedral, Grandma) . Whatever Next?
Except for September all events are on the Second Friday of the Month starting at 7.30pm, doors open at 7pm
and tickets are £5 except for September and October.
Phone 01303 251403 to reserve your tickets which are £5 each
John Oliver, Chairman Capel Church Hall Fund Raising Committee
Many will know that, after three years amongst us, our vicar, the Reverend Sue White is leaving us to take over the Whitfield
Benefice after Easter. The Parochial Church Council will be arranging a farewell get together for her in the refurbished Church
Hall at St Radigund's, Albany Road, Capel on Easter Monday 9th April starting at 6pm, and everyone is welcome.
We shall be making a presentation to Sue as part of the proceedings, and if you would like to be associated with a gift to mark all
that she has done for the Parish of Capel, then please give your contribution to Cherry Leppard at the Tuesday Farmer's Market, or
to me at 143 Old Dover Road Capel. We wish Sue good luck with the new challenge she is facing.
Jerry Spillett, Vice-Chairman, St Radigund's Capel PCC.

The Old Harveians Association have committed to replacing the Schools oldest Mini-Bus which is unlikely to pass it's next MOT and
will cost £23k to replace. The profit on this the 4th Annual concert of the Railway Swing Band will help towards this very large
expense. If you went to Harvey Grammar or have a son or grandson who did, or you just love the superb big band music of Ellington,
Basie, Miller, etc. or Music from the Musicals, then come along and enjoy a superb evening’s music. The atmosphere is great. These
concerts at Harvey have produced the largest audiences that the Band has at their concerts with around 300 attending.

Condensation is a common problem in British Homes in winter months. The air in and around your home
contains water vapour. The warmer the air is, the more water it can carry. When moist air from warm
living areas moves into colder parts of the house the water vapour turns into droplets of water and
condensation is formed. We produce moisture as we go about our daily lives, especially in kitchens,
bathrooms and even bedrooms. As we sleep our breath produces almost half a litre of water vapour.
Condensation usually forms on decorative surfaces and can leave spots of black mould. Damp, cold
homes can cause, damage to the building and health problems for the occupants. Mould can be removed
from walls using a special fungicidal wash (follow manufacturers guidelines). Special paints will delay
the return of the mould, however it will re-grow unless steps are taken to reduce condensation.
Install insulation to keep your home warmer and reduce energy costs. Draught-proofing will reduce heat loss.
(Remember not to block permanent ventilators or draught-proof rooms where there is fuel burning heater. Keep
eaves ventilation free of loft insulation
Produce less moisture - cover saucepans with lids, avoid drying clothes indoors. Ventilate to remove the
moisture – close kitchen/ bathroom doors and use the extractor fan, or leave the window slightly ajar or open the
trickle vent. Leave room for air to circulate behind furniture (ideally place furniture against internal walls).
Heat your home a little more in cold weather.
Damp is less common than condensation and is associated with a tide mark at the edge of the damp area. Rising damp is
caused by a failed or bridged damp proof course. Penetrating damp is usually caused by overflowing pipes/ gutters, holes
in the roof, cracks in walls or poor brickwork.

Thanks to everyone who is contributing ideas and helping. We have had a message, via the Lord Lieutenant, from
Her Majesty, saying she hopes that villagers will gather on village greens and party. She must have been
eavesdropping on Capel! Our plans are for a park party and you are specifically invited to join in.
As the celebrations fall on a Tuesday the Farmers’ Market will still go ahead but will be extended and be held outdoors.
Refreshments include a hog roast and more (we are waiting for confirmation and will let you know as soon as we can).
We are grateful to the Battle of Britain Memorial which has offered to lend us their marque.

Contact Jayne Stone, Cherry Leppard, Jenny Barraclough or Keith Pilcher for further information, offers of help or ideas.
CAPEL-LE-FERNE FARMERS’ MARKET
We will be holding a 'sort of fete' on the field at the rear of the hall, and it will be extended from 10am to 4pm instead of
the usual 12.30pm finish. We plan to have some extra stalls providing games, face painting etc, which will be arranged
by local clubs etc. We will also be having demonstrations/competitions in an arena i.e. fancy dress, dog show, bike
demonstration, local school choir, pipe band, decorated prams/scooters, races, tug of war etc.
Possibly an Art Exhibition in the hall along with the usual refreshments. All still in the early stages of planning.
We have been offered a marquee to have a beer tent, and Mark has offered to do a Hog Roast.
We plan to advertise it widely and make a really great day. We also ask everyone to wear Red, White and Blue!
I do hope you will all be able to come along and share the day with us, and this should also help us promote the market
further! If any of you have any ideas, please don't hesitate to let us know.

Capel Twinning Association held its Annual General Meeting
at the end of January, attended by 30 members. Bill Heath, as
chairman reported on a busy and enjoyable year, with events
held on both sides of the Channel. Kath Rudman report that the
club continues to be financially viable and subscriptions for the
year are £5.00 if any new members would like to join.
Another busy year is being planned by the new committee,
which included Bill Heath as Chairman, Kath Rudman as
Treasurer, Jayne Stone as Secretary and Carolyn Bedo as Trips
Organiser – a welcome returnee.
The clock presented to us now hangs in the Village Hall for all
to admire and in Oye-Plage an English Oak, presented to our
twin village, is growing well.
One of the first jobs for the new committee is to confirm the
draft programme for this year, which will include some of the
traditional Twinning events, as well as some new ones. We
look forward to seeing you at our next meeting, where you can
be sure of a warm welcome.
