PELICAN POINT MALL
DESCRIPTION: In this unit your class will become the site of a new mall. Each
student in the class will rent store space and design a floor plan
for a business for which you will be both president and owner.
Actual information will be obtained by visiting a store or business
similar to the one which you are designing. Using the information
obtained from your research and the appropriate computer
applications, you will need to create a personnel file and payroll,
develop customer files, plan budgets, graph profits, organize sales
and run ads. During this project you will be simulating many of the
true life activities of an actual business.
JOB 1: After deciding what type of store you will own, jot down the types of
merchandise found in that store. Research typical prices by visiting an
actual business similar to the one you are developing and ask their advice
not only for your stock list but to get an idea of overhead costs involved
in running a business.
JOB 2 Design a logo to be used on your business card and letter head, etc using
a computer graphics program.
JOB 3: Make an outline of a floor plan on paper using the correct drafting
symbols and account for building codes, etc. The computer generated
floor plan will done using a computer graphics program.
JOB 4: Now that you have a basic idea about your store, you need to create a
full page advertisement that will be sent out to local newspapers and
even magazines near the time of your grand opening day. Be sure to
include graphics and a variety of text fonts!
JOB 5: Create a business card that can be given out to prospective customers or
posted on community bulletin boards as additional advertising and to
identify you as the owner and president of your company. Print out a
copy of your sample card that you will send to a professional printer for
mass production.
JOB 6: Using a publishing program, create a letter head for your business that
can go on top of all your company correspondence. Be sure to include the
company name and address as well as a small graphic.
JOB 7: Create a web page to introduce visitors to your new store. You may use
any web design program or use HTML to create your site. Include
graphics to market your merchandise
Bonus
Using a graphics presentation program, create a multimedia presentation
with animation for your business that will advertise the type of store,
your plans for the grand opening, incentives for shopping at your store,
drawings of some of the merchandise to be found at your store, etc.
You must have a title screen, at least 3 different "scenes", and an ending
screen. Use at least three different methods of movement and sound
effects to enhance your project.
.
JOB 8: Use a spreadsheet program, to create a document which lists 25
merchandise items, their wholesale purchase costs and the regular retail
or selling prices in table format. Have the computer total the two
columns and find the profit. If you are opening a service type business
such as a restaurant, you may create a menu of at least 25 items instead.
Be sure that it is well designed and easy to follow.
JOB 9: After deciding what employee qualifications are necessary to work in
your store and what positions are available, use a word processor to
create a job application. Use fonts, borders, graphics, etc to make sure
that your application looks professional or you won't get any employees!
Be sure to include the sections listed on the grade sheet for this job.
JOB 10: Create an employee database for your business. Include fields for first
and last names, addresses, phone numbers, positions, hourly rate, and the
number of hours worked for one week. Have the computer calculate the
gross pay, income tax. social security tax and net pay. Input 20
different employees being sure to include people for all required
positions in your business. Print a sample record from the data base and
a report called PERSONNEL FILE for <Your Store name>. You may need
to change some column headings and compress the print. Total the 4
calculated columns.
JOB 11: Using a word processing program, design a company paycheck. Be sure to
include a pay stub for each employee. Print a blank (unmerged) check
and stub and then using the merge capabilities, print out weekly
paychecks for each of the employees working as cashiers or sales.
JOB 12: Use a database to create a file of customers for your business. Include
separate fields for the first and last names, street addresses, city,
state, zip code, phone numbers, and credit status (Gold Card, Cash Only,
Regular Credit, Master Card, Visa, etc.) for each of the 20 customers.
Make a report called CUSTOMER MAILING LIST for <Your Store
Name>. Remember to adjust margins and column widths and compress
the print before printing.
JOB 13: Using a word processing program, create an introductory letter
describing the new store opening. Make use of highlighting techniques,
margins, centering, etc. Because you are going to have a letterhead at
the top of the first page, be sure to leave enough space at the top of
your document to print the letterhead. You will be merging the letter
with the GOLD VISA card holders so use merged fields where needed.
If your letterhead is not part of your document, you can print several
sheets containing just the letterhead and then use them as the printer
paper when you are printing your letter. Be sure to use Print Preview so
that you don’t waste your paper. Print out mailing labels for the
envelopes to be sent to the same customers with excellent credit
ratings.
JOB 14: Set up a spreadsheet of the store's monthly budget on paper. Then
using a spreadsheet program, enter the allotted budget and actual
expenditures, as well as their totals to figure the profit or loss for the
month. Print out the entire display and the contents of all calculated
cells. Create 2 graphs from your spreadsheet. The first graph will be a
pie chart of the monthly expenses. The second graph will be a bar or
column graph of the total sales of each item in your stock. It should have
x axis labels and variable legends as well as main, sub, X, and Y axis
headings. Print out both graphs.
JOB 15: Put all 15 projects together in one folder and turn in the folder as a
business proposal. Be sure to have a cover sheet and everything nicely
organized.
