                                        SYLLABUS 2011-2012
The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) form the core of our curriculum. The TEKS for 8th
grade U.S. History may be found on the following website:
http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/ssc/teks_and_taas/teks/teks8.htm

Grading Policy:
Major Assignments (tests, projects, notebooks) 50%
Daily grades, participation, and quizzes 40%
      Benchmark Assessment 10%
Tutorials: Extra help is available after school by appointment ONLY in Mrs. Wades’ room. Just let me
know that you are coming.
Conferences: 4th period 11:35-12:00 p.m., or by appointment.

Classroom Rules:
   1. Follow Brenham Junior High Student Handbook.
   2. Follow directions the first time they are given.
   3. Arrive to class on time with all materials.
   4. Respect others.
   5. Respect school and personal property.

Homework Policies:
  - Homework is to be turned in on time on the date due at the teacher’s requested time. (Absences are
     the ONLY exception). Work will NOT be accepted over 2 days late. 15 points off for one day late;
30 points off 2 days late.
  - Students must check the Absent Folders and agenda board for missed assignments.
  - It is NOT the teacher’s responsibility to make sure you have your missed assignments, notes, or
     warm-ups.
Interactive Notebook:
**See Notebook Guidelines page. This will count as a MAJOR test grade each grading period.
Progress Reports go home with students after the third week of each 6 weeks grading period.

History Fair: ALL U.S. History students MUST participate in History Fair the first semester for a
final semester grade. I will take major test grades during the semester for research, note cards, etc. I
will give all students information about History Fair the first week of school. Check out my website
for more information.

 Tests: The tests will generally be objective. All information will be covered from either notes,
quizzes, homework assignments, or textbook. It will consist of multiple choice, fill in the blank,
short answer, and essay type questions.
 Make-up Tests: Anyone who misses a regularly scheduled test for any reason must make up
the test. The make-up test may or may not be the original test. Make-up tests may be taken
during the class period in another room, or after school (my choice).
 Quizzes: Quizzes may come at any time and may cover lectures, discussions, readings, videos,
assignments, and warm-ups. I do have Notebook Pop Quizzes sporadically. You will be able to
use your notebook so I strongly stress you have it organized and with you everyday! 
 Attendance: In a class such as history, being in class is very important. Absences do tend to
reduce a student’s learning and subsequently lower his/her grade. This is especially true
because much of the test material is covered in class.
 Suspensions: No credit will be given for work missed if you are suspended or cut class. Be
    responsible!
 Field Trips, Sports, Activities: All absences must be pre-arranged before you may be excused
from class. Please be responsible and turn all work in even though you will be absent.
 Tardies: It is essential that students arrive on time, are prepared, and are ready to work. If you
arrive late, you cause the teacher extra work and waste valuable class time. If you are not in
your seat when the bell rings, you are tardy! Bring a pass if you were detained by another
teacher or personnel. If you arrive tardy for the THIRD time during a grading period, you will b
spend one lunch detention with me and a parent contact will be made.
 Discipline Policies: I will enforce the “Three Strike Policy” for discipline in my class. Each
six weeks will begin a new policy. The first strike is a warning; the second strike is a parent
contact; the third strike will be an automatic trip to the principal’s office along with a phone call
to the parent/guardian. I will also have a “Classroom Behavior” system during my instructional
    hour.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Parent and Student Signatures: The purpose of these rules is to inform all concerned as to
what I expect and how I intend to run the class. I believe it is important for everyone to know
ahead of time what the class policies are so that confusion and future problems can be
eliminated. If you have read and understand your responsibilities for being a member of this
class, please sign. A parent or guardian must also read and sign this paper.

Thank You.
