Pennsylvania Early Childhood Learning Continuum Reading (Pre-K – K)
1.6 Speaking and Listening: A. Listen in order to give, restate, and follow two-step directions.
Given a pattern for a frog, students will cut out the pattern shapes with scissors.
Given the shapes, students will follow directions to assemble the frog using glue.
The teacher will informally assess students as they follow directions during the cutting and assembly of the frog.
The teacher will assess the student’s completion of the frog based on neatness of cutting, use of glue, and final product of the frog.
MATERIALS NEEDED: frog patterns, scissors, glue, blank white paper
1. Anticipatory Set:
The teacher will tell the students, “Who here would like to have their very own frog?”
2. Activating Prior Knowledge:
The teacher will ask the class, “What sound does fffrog begin with? Can anyone tell me? Frog begins with the letter F. Frogs
also eat something that begins with F and we read a story about an Old Lady who swallowed one of these bugs… That’s
right a fly begins with the same sound as frog.”
The teacher will instruct the students to cut out the shapes that are drawn on the frog pattern. She will model scissor cutting
and circulate through the classroom to help any students. Then, step by step, she will show students how to assemble their
frog with the glue. (See frog pattern for example and instructions). Students will be given a blank sheet of paper to put the
pieces on so that glue will not end up on the table.
The teacher will remind students how to properly store their glue sticks.
The teacher will ask students to show her their frogs, and then review that frog and fly both begin with the letter f.
BACK-UP ACTIVITIES: Introduce and sing the song Oom-ah Went the Little Green Frog
