ADMISSION INTO POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES FOR 2012/2013
The University of Dar es Salaam invites applications for admission into its Master of Science with Education [M.Sc.
(Ed.)] and Master of Science in Fisheries and Aquaculture [M.Sc. (Fish.&Aq.)] Degree Programmes (by course work
and dissertation) for the 2012/2013 Academic Year
A) MASTER OF SCIENCE WITH EDUCATION [M.Sc. (Ed.)]
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES, DESCRIPTION AND STRUCTURE:
The M.Sc. (Ed.) is a course-work and dissertation programme intended for graduate science teachers, who want to
expand their knowledge base, depth and scope, and to advance their professional careers in their major areas of
natural science and mathematics. The overall objective of the programme is to create a critical mass of well educated
and competent science teachers equipped with contemporary knowledge, skills and attitude to teach effectively.
The duration shall be twenty four months (2 years) for full-time students and thirty six months (3 years) for part-time
students. The first year is for course-work and the second year shall be devoted to dissertation work. The course-work
programme consists of Science (including Mathematics) and Education courses. A candidate shall major in only one
science subject, namely Biology or Chemistry or Physics or Mathematics, and Education.
The course load consists of taught core and elective Units, and a dissertation. The minimum course load required is
51 Units composed of 27 Units of Science (including 6 units of dissertation) and 24 Units of Education. A candidate
must pass both the course-work and the dissertation to qualify for the degree award.
(i) An honours B.Sc.(Ed.) or B.Ed.(Science) degree from a recognized University. Applicants who hold unclassified
degrees should have a credit or distinction in the science subject intended for the Master's programme. The
relevant subjects are Physics or Biology or Chemistry or Mathematics. Applicants with Pass degree classification
will also be considered provided that:-
a) Their undergraduate performance in the proposed subject of study was a ‘B’ grade or above.
b) They have satisfied the College of Natural and Applied Sciences of the University of Dar es Salaam that
they have exhibited potential through subsequent research experience and/or additional training after the
their first degree
(ii) Applicants with non-education B.Sc. degrees or equivalent from a recognized higher learning institution will
also be considered provided they, in addition, hold a Postgraduate Diploma in Education from a recognized
PROGRAMME DURATION AND STRUCTURE:
For full-time students it is a two-year programme comprising of two semesters (one academic year) of taught
coursework followed by one year of research and dissertation. For part-time students the duration is three years.
B) MASTER OF SCIENCE IN FISHERIES AND AQUACULTURE [M.Sc. (Fish.&Aq.)]
i) The undergraduate performance should be in the related subject with at least B grade average.
ii) A candidate should satisfy the College of Natural and Applied Sciences of the University of Dar es Salaam with
the exhibited potential knowledge in the field of study through subsequent research experience and /or additional
