Oldbury Wells School
A Specialist Science College
INFORMATION SHEET - October 2009
Welcome back to Autumn term at Oldbury Wells. The first half of the term has already been eventful with a visit by
helicopter from the RAF, kindly donating team strips to our PE department (see our website,
www.oldburywells.co.uk for further details), auditions for ‘Oliver’, our next musical production to be staged in the
Spring term and a royal visit and Science College day as reported below. Our new intake of Year 7s have made a
very good start to their careers at Oldbury Wells and we are looking forward to welcoming Year 7 parents to school
for the Year 7 Parents’ Evening on Thursday, 22 October.
PD DAY REMINDER
There are no planned PD days now until Friday, 23 April 2010 (see term dates overleaf). I regret there has been
confusion as, unlike other local schools, Oldbury Wells School will be open to all years this Friday, 23 October.
As you may have heard we were honoured today, Wednesday, with a visit from His Royal Highness the Duke of
Gloucester. As you may know the Duke is the Queen’s cousin and the grandson of King George V. Some of our
pupils were fortunate enough to meet him when he arrived by helicopter! In true Bridgnorth style the Duke left
Bridgnorth by steam train after opening the new Engine House Visitor Centre at Highley Station. Look out for
photographs of this special event on our website (www.oldburywells.co.uk) and in the local press.
SCIENCE COLLEGE DAY
Thursday, 22 October is Science College Day with the theme of the 2012 Olympics. Students will be taking part in a
variety of activities throughout the day. The RAF will be carrying out team building with some Year 11 students
while lower school students will be putting together an Olympic bid. The Science department will be looking at
streamlining, forensic science and making medals, while the Maths department are looking at factors that influence
world records. The PE department will be running a mini Olympics.
SIXTH FORM PARTNERSHIP INFORMATION EVENING
Would all Year 11 parents look out for information on the forthcoming Sixth Form Partnership Information Evening
on Wednesday, 4 November. As you may be aware, Oldbury Wells and Bridgnorth Endowed schools are now
collaborating to form a single Sixth Form Partnership. This will offer a greater breadth and depth of subject choice
to students in the Bridgnorth area. Both school sites will be open for the Information Evening with subject divided
between the two.
MORRISONS SUPERMARKET’S ‘LETS GROW’ CAMPAIGN
Morrisons ‘Lets Grow’ campaign has begun again with vouchers being distributed for gardening equipment for
schools. Oldbury Wells School has registered and any vouchers will be gratefully received!
