Theme: Chemistry

Topic: Periodic Table

Title: Let the Table Begin

National Standard: Physical Science Content Standard B. Properties and changes of
properties in matter: There are more than 100 known elements that combine in a multitude of
ways to produce compounds, which account for the living and nonliving substances that we
encounter. (B. 1. 3)

Purpose: To allow students to explore that science has systems of organizing and
classifying information, such as the Periodic Table of Elements.

Recommended Level: Grades 5-8

Time: 30 minutes

Materials:
Periodic table (copy provided pg. 3) Colored index cards
Poster board or cart board Magic markers
              Pens Tape

Presentation / Procedures: Divide the students into groups of four. Give each
student a blank index card and a copy of the periodic table. On the front of the card have the
students supply the following information:
Name
Address
Phone Number
Birth Date
Favorite Subject
Hobbies, Interests, etc.

Tell the students that science must have systems of organizing and classifying information.
One of the most common examples is the Periodic Table of the Elements. A chemical symbol
and an atomic number identify all of the known elements in the universe. Tell the students that
they are going to make a “Table of Students.” The students will be the elements in the table.
The students must have a student symbol and a student number. The students will work in their
group of four, but all of the groups will have to interact. Effective communication will ensure
group success. The students must use the following rules and guidelines:
1. No two students may have the same symbol or number.
2. Symbols may contain one or two letters.
3. If two letters are used, the first must be capitalized and the second letter must be lower-
    case.
4. The whole group must use the same system for establishing symbols and numbers.
5. Systems of selection must be logical and orderly.

                                        Classroom Activity

After the students have determined their symbols and numbers, give each group a set of
colored cards. (Each group will have a single color.) On the blank side of the card, have the
students write their name, symbol and number; using the same format as the Periodic Table.

Have the students attach their cards to the student chart. Analyze and critique the chart. Can
you make any improvements? Is there any order to the colors? What alternative methods
could be used to arrange the cards?

Expected Outcome: The students’ selection process for determining their symbols and
numbers will vary. Any process is okay as long as the system used is logical and orderly and
the students can explain how they came up with their system.
