Agri-Food Demand Witnessing Rapid Growth in India The total domestic demand of Agri-Food products in India is expected to grow at a CAGR of 13% during 2011-12 - 2017-18. IMARC Group, one of the world's leading research and advisory firms, finds in its new report “Indian Agriculture Market Report & Forecasts 2012-2017” that the total demand of Agri-Food products in India is expected to grow robustly in the coming years. Estimates currently suggest that India ranks second in terms of farm output. The country is currently the world's largest producer of various fruits and vegetables, different spices and several staples such as millets and castor oil seeds. India is also the second largest producer of wheat and rice, the world's major food staples. The country today ranks within the world's five largest producers of around 80% of various agricultural products. The report which has done a comprehensive analysis on the Indian Agri-Food sector (consisting of cereals, fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, spices and pulses) finds that both domestic demand as well as exports in this sector are currently witnessing rapid growth. In 2011-12, cereals dominated this market accounting for 47% of the total value demand. Cereals were followed by fruits which accounted for around 20% of the total value demand. This sector, however, has significantly higher margins than most of the other Agri-Food segments and is currently exhibiting the fastest growth rate. Banana and Mango currently represent the most popular fruit categories accounting for around 38% and 20% of the total fruit volumes respectively in 2011-12. Looking forward, the report expects the total domestic demand of Agri-Food products to grow at a CAGR of around 13% during 2011-12 - 2017-18. Increasing household incomes, government incentives, contract farming, growth in the processed food market, increasing penetration of organized food retail, etc. are expected to be the biggest drivers of this market in the coming years.
