FADE IN:

INT: RESTAURANT - DAY
                                                           1
The restaurant is on ground level. It is brightly lit and
there is activity in the background. Morning light
flickers through the traffic from the street outside.
Waiters clear tables and prepare places.

Moving along an aisle in the foreground is MEI.

Mei is Chinese. She is in her late twenties and has long
glossy black hair and a pale smooth complexion. She wears
a simple white summer outfit. She is beautiful and moves
smoothly and silently through the restaurant on modest
high-heeled shoes of glass.

She scans the tables and the waiters as she passes. The
staff all step aside respectfully.

EXT: STREET - DAY
                                                              2
Exterior glass doors slide open. MEI steps out into the
sunlight.

Waiting at the roadside in front of her is a WHITE CAR.

INT: CAR - DAY
                                                          3
MEI opens the door and quietly slides into the back of
the car. On the seat beside her there is a small BLACK
CASE.

She sits back and peers out the window at the morning
traffic outside. She indicates to the driver and morning
light catches her elegant profile as the car pulls away.

EXT: SEA – DAY: AERIAL VIEW
                                                              4
There is a silvery sheen of the early morning sun
reflecting on water as it passes beneath.

A suspension bridge comes into view, the cables casting
shadows across the traffic far below. Amongst the tiny
cars can be seen Mei's WHITE CAR, driving steadily across
                             3

the bridge.

As the bridge passes, land comes into view. A runway
appears. Light glints on tailfins and wings of tiny
aircraft.

INT: AIRPORT - DAY
                                                           5
People mill around. Music plays, radios can be heard.
There is the rustling of newspapers and clicking of
ticket dispensers as morning commuters bustle
around stalls. Announcements echo.

                         CAPTION:

                           7:00 AM
                     Hour Of The Dragon

There is a dark, empty corridor behind the stalls. It is
by-passed by the rush-hour crowds.

MEI steps out of the darkness of the corridor. She starts
to walk amidst the congested pedestrians

There is a silent flash of light.

Mei pauses and looks around, curious. A few moments later
there is a distant rumble of thunder and a puzzled murmur
runs through the crowd in the background. Mei looks up to
see the sky beginning to bruise through the skylights
above. Radios echoe with weather reports.

INT: AIRPORT: DEPARTURES HALL - DAY
                                                         6
MEI emerges in the airport departures hall. Vivaldi plays
lightly over the P.A. in the background.

There is a brighter flash and a louder rumble follows
closer behind it. People murmur and move uneasily.
                            4

EXT: CONTROL TOWER - DAY
                                                           7
Outside there is the roar and hiss of engines.
Reflections of tailfins move across the curved glass of
the observation bay window.

The encroaching darkness of the sky hangs forebodingly
over the scene.

MEI appears, crouching behind the parapet of the tower,
amidst beacons and radar disks, her hair flapping in the
wind, all sound drowned by the noise of the runway. She
begins to assemble a long thin RIFLE from the small BLACK
CASE.

She stands and, careful to remain hidden behind the radar
disks, she moves towards the edge of the tower.

EXT: AIRPORT: RUNWAY - DAY: MEI'S P.O.V.
                                                         8
MEI runs her eye around the gathering storm clouds before
turning her attention to the passengers on the runway
below. They queue to board the plane closest to her. They
huddle together, nervous of the sudden darkness.
Floodlights light up along the runway.

There is another flash of lightning.

Amongst the crowd there is a distinguished looking MAN
waiting at the bottom of the steps. He is Caucasian, with
tight, graying hair and steely eyes. He is wearing a
YELLOW SUIT.

He appears to be escorting something that is obscured by
other passengers.

Mei takes aim as the crowd starts to move.

As the Man in the yellow suit ascends the steps, a brief
parting in the crowd reveals that he is holding a WHITE
LEASH that is restraining something moving up the steps
ahead of him. It is moving below the line of the railings
- an animal of some kind.

Mei fires and the shot ricochets off the railings, the
sound drowned by the roaring engines. The Man in the
yellow suit continues on his way and there is no evidence
of a disturbance in the crowd.
                            5

Then there is a crash of lightning and thunder
simultaneously, sudden and deafening, from directly
overhead. The lightning reflects on the metal of the
planes and momentarily creates arcs of light on the glass
of the observation bay window behind. Mei starts.
Startled shouts ring out in the background.

Mei looks around urgently at the observation bay window
and then, reassured that she has not been seen, she takes
aim again. But as the Man ascends the steps there is no
clear view of him. Mei repositions and tries to aim
again, but the Man has entered the plane. Mei looks
around frantically, to the runway, back to the plane.

Then she glances back towards the observation tower.

She is startled as she sees a small face staring at her
through the reflections of the observation bay window,
distorted by the rainwater running over it’s curved
surface. She stays very still.

                                                         9
Standing inside the window is a small BOY. He is Chinese,
slight with a small pale face, peering out innocently. He
too, is startled at being seen and stiffens, averting his
gaze.

EXT: CONTROL TOWER - DAY
                                                        10
The steps are pulled away from the plane as the doors
close and the hiss and roar of it’s engine bends upwards
and amplifies. Red lights flash as it starts to move
away.

MEI quickly dismantles her rifle and gathers her things.

INT: AIRPORT: OBSERVATION TOWER - DAY
                                                        11
The BOY slowly walks backwards, away from the window,
back into the crowd. He glances quickly in the direction
of the control tower before it is out of his view. Mei is
gone.
                               6

Thunder rolls across the sky again. The boy turns and
walks faster through the crowds.

INT: AIRPORT: DEPARTURES HALL - DAY
                                                          12
The BOY tries to lose himself in the throng but as he
crosses the departures hall the people recede and he has
no cover. On the other side of the hall he sees MEI
waiting. He stops and stands perfectly still.

As MEI walks towards him the departures hall becomes
strangely quiet, the background noise of bustling crowds
subsiding. He does not know what to do. He looks
straight-ahead, avoiding eye contact.

MEI arrives. He stares ahead, her white waist filling his
view. Then she slowly kneels in front of him and her face
enters his fixed vision, her dark eyes resting parallel
to his own. Her smooth white skin glistens with rainwater
and her dark wet hair hangs heavy, like seaweed, over her
shoulders. She looks into his eyes. Her voice is quiet
but close.

                              MEI

                    What are you afraid of?

He gazes back at her and then looks hesitantly towards
the BLACK CASE.

There is a fainter flash of light and a delayed, distant
rumble as the storm abates.

Descent over cityscape.

The darkness of the passing storm hangs on the horizon.
Beams of morning light return through clouds.

The WHITE CAR drives across the bridge.

INT: WHITE CAR - DAY
                            7

                                                        14
The BOY and MEI sit in the back seat of the white car as
it crosses the suspension bridge. He is sitting well away
from Mei. He is looking out the window. Reflections from
the passing bridge cables play on his face.

Mei is speaking quietly into a CAR PHONE.

                           MEI

I’ll be there in an hour.

Ahead of them, on the other side of the bridge, an island
looms through early morning mist.

EXT: STREET - DAY
                                                          15
The island is densely packed with tower blocks and
skyscrapers.

Steam rises from fast-food stalls and police guide the
traffic through the congested streets. The WHITE CAR
glides smoothly behind crowds.

                         CAPTION:

INT: WHITE CAR – DAY: BOY’S P.O.V.
                                                         15a
Over the traffic in the foreground appears a towering
edifice of stone and glass. Orange morning light falls
across the stone, creating cool blue shadows.

As the building grows nearer, carved metallic Kanji
characters can be seen over the entrance. They read; THE
GOLD HOTEL.

CROSSFADE:

INT: HOTEL ROOM 1
                                                          16
Through the blinds a light can be seen passing outside
the window. It passes from east to west at great speed.
There is a barely perceptible ‘swoosh’ as it passes. It
casts eerie light, circling continuously around the room.
                            8

The BOY and MEI are standing in the middle of the room.

A tall MAN is standing by the window with his back to
them. He has silver gray hair and is wearing a WHITE
SUIT. He speaks quietly, in a low steady voice.

                           MAN

                          Mei?

Mei approaches him and stands close.

                           MEI

I couldn’t get sight of it.
                         (pause)
             ...and this boy saw everything.

The boy shifts his weight from foot to foot, nervously.

The man turns and his face becomes apparent. He appears
to be very distinguished, perhaps in his forties. His
ethnicity is difficult to place but he has a distinct
Slavic or Teutonic look. He recalls an ancient Eastern
European or Mongolian ruler.

Physically he seems to be normal in every respect but for
one striking feature - his azure, sky blue skin.

The strobe flashes across his cool blue face and steely
hair and he narrows his eyes.

Mei stands aside and the man approaches the boy. He looks
the boy up and down carefully. The boy stares back,
unmoved.

Mei narrows her eyes and gives the boy a cool look.

                           MEI

              Bow before The Metal Dragon.

The boy matches Mei's look and barks back his first word;

                           BOY

                           NO!

The Metal Dragon is surprised at the boy's outspokenness.
The Dragon looks at Mei. Mei bows her head.
                               9

                             M.D.

                Where does he come from?

The boy cuts across him.

                              BOY

                           Nowhere!

The Metal Dragon stops and eyes the boy again, curiously.
The boy keeps looking him in the eye.

The Metal Dragon kneels slowly in front of him.

                             M.D.

                         So, ...
                   you saw everything.

The Metal Dragon considers for a moment, then stands
again. He walks away and adds, dismissively;

                             M.D.

                           Kill him.

Mei looks up, concerned. The boy barks again;

                              BOY

                              NO!

The Metal Dragon turns. He gestures to Mei and she
hesitantly lifts her rifle towards the boy.

                              BOY

                         NO! ...
                  I don't want to die!

Mei pauses. The Metal Dragon paces for a few moments,
then his lips curl and he adopts a wry tone.

                             M.D.

                        Well, ...
                 what do you want then?

There is a long pause. Mei presses her rifle to the boy's
                            10

head.

                           BOY

                        Nothing!

                          M.D.

Then, what will we do with you?

Mei takes a breath and lowers her rifle. She lightens her
tone and steps closer to the boy. She twirls her finger
in his hair and says, playfully;

                           MEI

                We could keep him here,...
                          (pause)
Give him work of some kind and
we'll be able to watch him.
                    He could be useful.

The Metal Dragon considers this for a moment. He kneels
in front of the boy again.

                          M.D.

                        Well, ...
what can you do for us?

                           MEI

What would you like to learn from
                    The Metal Dragon?

The boy looks at them both silently for a moment, then
shouts;

                           BOY

                  I don't want to die!

The Metal Dragon and Mei shoot glances at one another.
They wait for a beat. Then the Dragon addresses the boy,
a little more cautiously.

                          M.D.

There are many things you can learn,...
                          (pause)
                 ... many things that you
                              11

            can study to better yourself,...
                       if you want.
                          (pause)
And we can teach them to you.

The boy waits, attentively.

                          M.D.

                     Would you like
                 to learn to fight? ...
                  to protect yourself?

                              BOY

                          How?

                          M.D.

                      Training,...
             like archery or swordsmanship.

                              BOY

Will they stop me from dying ?

                          M.D.

                      Not exactly.

                              BOY

                  Then they’re no good.

                          M.D.

                         No good?
(he strokes his chin, slightly bemused)

                        Well, ...
                  What about business?
                  Would you like me to
                     teach you that?

                              BOY

                       What is it?

                          M.D.

                Certain things, ... like,
                            12

             knowing how to avoid disaster,
             ... or pursue good fortune,...
                    to be successful.

                           BOY

Would it make me live forever?

                          M.D.

                     I’m afraid not.

                           BOY

                   Then it’s no good!
                    I won't learn it!

The Metal Dragon becomes impatient.

                          M.D.

                 How about philososphy?

                           BOY

Will it make me live forever?

                          M.D.

                     Certainly not!

                           BOY

Then I’m not going to learn
                       philosophy!

Angered, The Metal Dragon turns and is about to walk
away.

Then he pauses. He is pensive. He considers very
carefully. Then he turns decisively and asks;

                          M.D.
                        (slowly)

Would you like to study, ...
                the philosophy of crime?

                           BOY

                           No!
                            13

                           M.D.
                   (losing his temper)

You won't learn this and you won't learn that!
What is it you do want!

                           BOY

                I want to live forever!!

They all stop, standing in a triangle. The Metal Dragon
indicates to Mei and she lifts the rifle to the boy's
head again.

Then The Metal Dragon returns to the boy and kneels once
more. He leans closer than before. He gazes steadily and
speaks purposefully.

                          M.D.

Do you know where you are?
                (he gestures around him)

Do you know what this place is?
                         (pause)
                         Do you?

The boy matches The Metal Dragon's stare.

                           BOY

                           No!

                          M.D.

Is that all you can say?

The continuing strobe outside the window flashes across
The Metal Dragon's blue face and it's constant low
'swoosh' adds to the air of tension. He smiles
menacingly.

                          M.D.

You really want to live forever?
                 (he clears his throat)

                       You know,...
             There are indeed creatures that
are exempt from birth and destruction.
                            14

He lowers his voice and moves closer.

                          M.D.

             They were known everywhere that
               civilization had been. They
            flourished in the ancient world.

He makes a sweeping gesture with his arm. His voice
raises as he grows excited.

                          M.D.

           They moved through Eastern Europe,
               across Asia and into China,
with the Slav, the Magyar and
                 the devil-begotten Hun!!
                     They are eternal!

He moves closer still and whispers;

                          M.D.

You speak to one of them now,
                      ... the last.

Mei wears a confused expression of admiration and pity
and her eyes grow moist for a moment as she holds the
rifle to the boy's forehead. Her hands shake.

                           BOY

                 You’re hurting my head!

Mei stops and steadies herself. The boy looks down at
Mei's white, trembling hands on the rifle and back to her
white face.

The Metal Dragon whispers slowly and sharply through his
teeth, the strobe flashing across his face, reflecting in
his teeth and eyes;

                          M.D.

... and you are in our world now, ...
and we live in a time of our own!
(he gestures out the window, towards the
                    passing strobe light)
The world below no longer knows you!
A day here with me is a decade
                            15

                   on the earth below!

He runs his finger playfully on the boy’s chin.

                           M.D.

... You've already been away for years.

Then the boy starts as The Metal Dragon shouts;

                            M.D.
                        (ominously)

                    You belong to me!

With an intake of breath Mei increases the pressure of
her rifle on the boy’s forehead.

There is a sudden flash of light and a thunderous noise
from the rifle echoes around the room. The flash
momentarily lights up the blue skin of the Metal Dragon's
face and the white oval of Mei’s face and the boy is
propelled backwards with great force.

                                                         17
Mei withdraws. She kneels. She has a remorseful
expression as she peers at the boy. There is a long
silence.

Then the Metal Dragon’s voice is heard, now restrained
and speaking matter of factly.

                           M.D.

                Your youth is preserved,
             you will live indefinitely and
                 you will feel no pain.

The boy stirs slowly.

                           M.D.

                     But I know you’ll
                      come to no good.
                           (pause)
                   So, when you get into
               trouble, I absolutely forbid
you to say you are my disciple.
                               16

The Metal Dragon turns away.

Mei reaches out and strokes the boy’s head. Then she
leans forward and whispers kindly in his ear;

                           MEI

                      Remember,...
a day above is a decade below.

FADE TO BLACK:

INT: POLICE HEADQUARTERS: OBSERVATION BAY - DAY
                                                        18
The room overlooks the city. There are blinds on the
window. A blue light, like a siren but silent, flashes
outside the window. Researchers and police officials busy
themselves around the room. There is a large round table
in the middle of the room. It is spotlit.

There is a large display on the table showing a map of
the island. The island is perfectly circular, with
contour lines that suggest a consistent incline. Around
the shoreline is clearly marked HAI-WAN/BAY OF THUNDER.
East to west, through the centre of the island, through
the town square, is clearly marked DIAN-YIN GU/VALLEY OF
ELECTRICITY. It is also clearly marked that the island is
20 kilometers across.

There are four suspension bridges connecting the island
to the mainland. Each bridge serves a traffic tunnel on
the island. There are markers at each of the tunnel
entrances and at the square in the middle of Dian-Yin Gu.

Mounted on the walls of the office, and standing around
the table, are lines of monitors relaying the security
surveillance from the key points on the island that are
marked on the map.

The Chief of Police, MS.YOUNG, is sitting at her desk
behind the table. She is in her forties, of Irish
extraction, with steely eyes and a brooding manner. She
scans the surveillance paraphernalia of the office. She
lights a cigarette.

An AIDE in white stands in front of Ms.Young’s desk. On a
drawing board are pinned a series of black and white
                            17

photographs and the Aide tries to keep Ms.Young’s
attention with a red laser ‘pointer’.

                          AIDE

                 ... if I might continue

Ms.Young speaks with a restrained drawl.

                        MS.YOUNG

                       Certainly.

                          AIDE

This is a still from a security video
taken a few years ago at the airport.
The woman appears to be abducting this boy.
               They were both seen entering
The Gold Hotel about an hour later,
              but were never seen again,...

Ms.Young’s attention has now been caught. She leans
forward.

                          AIDE

... until this morning, when the woman
              re-appeared in the restaurant
on the ground floor of the hotel.

                        MS.YOUNG

                      And the boy?

                          AIDE

Well, this is an interesting one.
(he moves to a new photograph)

Here’s a still from the subway
                  entrance near the hotel,
              taken very early this morning.
                It’s difficult to make out,
                 but the figure matches the
             description of the airport boy.

Ms.Young puts out her cigarette. The smoke spirals
upwards and is momentarily caught in the red light of the
pointer.
                             18

                        MS.YOUNG

                   This is interesting,
but it’s pretty far down on
                       my list, ...

The Aide cuts across her.

                            AIDE

                 I always thought so,...
               until I found these images
                    from the archives.

He presses a remote and on the monitor in the background
appears a large black and white video still of the
airport control tower. Mei’s figure, rifle in hand, hair
flapping in the wind, is clearly seen, silhouetted
against storm clouds.

                            AIDE

                       Same woman,
                      same morning.

                        MS.YOUNG

                      And the boy?

The Aide shrugs and throws down his pointer.

                            AIDE

Don’t know where he came from.

Ms.Young looks around for a moment.

The sound of a helicopter can be heard over the building.
Ms.Young deliberates.

                        MS.YOUNG

                 Ok, It’s your project,
                     keep me posted.

An official approaches Ms.Young with other business and
the Aide gathers his things.

Through darkness the slight figure of a boy crouches in
silhouette. There are dank sounds and a drop of water
falls from the boy’s fringe.

Mei’s disembodied voice can be heard softly in voice-
over;

                             MEI
                           ( V.O.)

Over his shoulder can be seen a subway platform. He eases
back into the darkness.

The street outside the subway is deserted.

The boy’s silhouette appears from the darkness of the
subway entrance.

On the other side of the street there is the neon-lit
facade of motorcycle showrooms. In front of the
showrooms, surrounded by railings, is a display area
containing a multitude of motorcycles of all shapes and
sizes.

Over a bay window at the front of the showrooms, the
signage reads ‘THE FOREVER MOTOR COMPANY’. There is a
YELLOW CAR parked outside.

In the first floor window over the signage can be seen
Mei’s target from the airport, the MAN in the yellow
suit.

INT: ROOM - NIGHT
                                                          21
The MAN in the yellow suit is standing by the window. A
desk full of office equipment is behind him.

A girl sits on the table, putting books away into a
schoolbag. She is in her mid-teens. She is a beautiful,
slender, half-cast girl with sandy hair and a smooth,
high brow. She is PALANKA.

When Palanka has finished with the books the Man turns
and, planting a kiss on her forehead, he bids her
goodnight and she leaves.

The Man turns back to the window. He gazes out onto the
dark street, his brow furrowed. Then he relaxes and
removes the jacket of his YELLOW SUIT, preparing to
retire.

There is movement on the other side of the room and the
Man turns.

An elusive, shadowy figure emerges from a dark corner,
appearing to step down.

The Man narrows his eyes.

                           MAN
                        (warily)
                            21

                      Who are you ?

There is no sound from the dark corner. The figure
remains out of view.

The Man leaves the window and approaches the corner
cautiously. He peers into the dimness. From the corner
the boy’s voice is heard. It is deeper than before, an
adolescent voice.

                           BOY

               I’ve been watching you,...
                         (pause)

I’ve been watching you for years.
I know you’re one of the dragons.

The Man keeps his distance, warily. He backs away
slightly, glancing in the direction of the intercom on
his desk.

                           MAN

Why have you come to me?

                           BOY

I know you’re the dragon of
                   the western district.
                Your business is transport
and you have a treasury full
                        of weapons.

The boy moves forward a little, out of the shadows. A bar
of light from the street outside falls across his face.

The boy is older now, perhaps mid-teens. His face is pale
blue. All his skin is blue, like The Metal Dragon’s. On
his forehead is a long thin scar, which extends around
his head, under his hair. There is a restraint about his
movement and he stares with a steady purpose.

A look of dark realisation crosses the Man’s face and he
steps back. For a moment he is lost for words but gathers
himself.

                           BOY

              I see you have transport,...
                    have you weapons?
                             22

The Man is reluctant, but with a solemn air and without
any question, he presses the button on the intercom on
his desk.

                             MAN

                           Ms.Hou!

MS.HOU enters.

Ms.Hou has deep, ebony skin and silver hair, with an
ageless complexion. She is wearing a simple white outfit.
She wears a WHITE NECK-BAND.

She eyes the boy warily as she walks towards the desk.

The Man turns to Ms.Hou.

                             MAN

                     See what you can
                 find in the treasury for
                        our guest.
                          (pause)
             He wants transport and weapons.

Ms.Hou leaves the room.

There is a tense silence as the boy paces and the Man
waits.

A few moments later Ms.Hou returns with a LARGE SWORD.
The boy looks at it with disdain.

                             BOY

                   I don’t like swords.
                 Find me something else.

Ms.Hou looks to the Man, who nods to indicate to let the
boy have his way. Ms.Hou bows and leaves.

She returns again a few moments later with a SHOTGUN. The
boy takes it and turns it in his hand. He tries aiming it
out the window.

                             BOY

                     It doesn’t suit
                         my hand.
                             23

                            MAN

                     What do you mean?

                            BOY

                  It doesn’t suit my hand!
                   Find me something else!

The boy gives him a stern look. The Man looks away and
gestures to Ms.Hou again.

A few moments later Ms.Hou returns with a CROSSBOW. The
boy takes the crossbow and turns it this way and that.
Then he aims it at the Man, who steps back.

                            BOY

                   Still doesn’t suit me.

                            MAN

                    It’s the best weapon
                         we’ve got!

The boy steps forward and stares the Man in the eye.

                            BOY

                   Well, just look again.

The Man steps behind his desk, trying to keep his
composure.

                            MAN

                     I warn you,...
              I haven’t got anything else.

Ms.Hou approaches the Man. He takes her aside and they
speak privately.

All goes quiet.

                           MS.HOU

                    Sir, I can see he’s
                   no ordinary visitor.
The Heavy Iron is in the treasury.
Should we not give it to him?
                            24

The Man is pensive for a moment. He whispers;

                           MAN

                 I fear the Heavy Iron.
One touch of it is deadly.

                         MS.HOU
                     (persuasively)

Give it to him and if he can
handle it let him have it.

The Man is reluctant but agrees.

Ms.Hou leaves again and returns a few moments later.

She carries a platter with a LARGE PISTOL on it.

The pistol has a blackened iron handle with dark greasy
wood paneling along its barrel. But more striking is the
inlay of bluish shell that catches the streetlight from
outside and shimmers a little, like the surface of an
insect’s wing.

She holds the platter forward and its reflection catches
the side of the boy’s face. To the Man’s surprise the boy
takes it and flips it easily in his hand.

                           BOY

                    Yes, ... but,...

He paces up and down, waving the HEAVY IRON, and adds, in
a mocking tone.

                           BOY

... with a thing like this in my hand
I begin to feel the lack of
something suitable to go with it.

                           MAN
                     (dismissively)

You’ll have to try another district.

                           BOY

              Find me something else, now!
                            25

                           MAN

               I don’t have anything else.
If I did you’d already have it!

                           BOY

                        All right!
I’ll try this Heavy Iron on you
and then we’ll see if you can
                    give me something!

The Man’s eyes flare and he raises his voice.

                           MAN

I’m not afraid of you pale people!!

Ms.Hou steps behind the desk and he draws her closer,
stroking her dark arm affectionately.

                           MAN

My people have lots of blood in them.
Yours all seems to have run out!

The boy grits his teeth and raises The Heavy Iron. The
Man withdraws fearfully.

              Steady! Steady, immortal,...
                       ... steady.
(waving his hands to calm the boy)

Just let me see if my brothers
                     have anything.

He moves towards the intercom on his desk again.

                           BOY

                      Who are they?

                           MAN

They are the dragons of the southern,
             northern and eastern districts.

The boy lowers his Heavy Iron and moves back again into

The MAN in the yellow suit is standing with three other
men, the DRAGONS. They wear equally colourful suits, red,
blue and green, denoting their districts. They are of
Indian and Asian extraction.

                       GREEN DRAGON
                      (with disdain)

                 Where is this barbarian?

                             MAN
                          (calmly)

Ms.Hou is taking care of him.

                         BLUE DRAGON

                    Have him arrested!

                              MAN

                    Out of the question!
                The slightest touch of that
                   Heavy Iron is deadly!

                         RED DRAGON

It’d be better not to tamper with him.
Give him something to get rid of him.

An ominous silence descends over the group after the Red

Then the Man in the yellow suit indicates the break up of
the meeting.

MS.HOU escorts the boy into the motorbike showrooms
below. There is a bay window that looks out across the
sea, towards the airport. There is a yellow/gold glow
reflected in the curve of the bay window. The room is
eerily quiet. Ms.Hou stands closer and speaks softly to
the boy.

                         MS.HOU

It makes me mad to know that she has
taken the life out of you.
Do you know where you were?
Do you know what that place is?
                  (she narrows her eyes)

That place where every speck of dust
that moves in the air is a monster in embryo.
                          (pause)
                   You deal with madmen!

She continues, but with a cautionary tone.

                         MS.HOU

                They fear the Heavy Iron.
                          (pause)
Iron injures the eyes of dragons.
                 And you have injured the
                      Yellow Dragon.

Without taking her eyes off the boy, she slowly
approaches the source of the gold reflections. She
gestures towards it, caressing the air, as the gold light
shimmers on her dark skin.
                            28

                         MS.HOU

Dragons live among us here in
                   Hai-Wan, ... in the
                     Bay of Thunder.

She walks around the gold source, towards the bay window.
She looks out across the cityscape.

                         MS.HOU
                        (softly)

Dragons have pearls under their throats
and in their mouths. When they fight in
the sky, pearls fall to the ground.
                          (pause)
            These are called ‘Thunder Pearls’.

The boy stands and gazes at the source of light, his blue
face lit from below in gold. He steps closer and,
reaching out, he caresses a smooth, cool surface, just
out of view. With a new air of satisfaction, he says to
himself, under his breath;

                           BOY

                     Thunder Pearl.

The METAL DRAGON is pacing up and down. MEI is standing
close to him. She is pensive. The Metal Dragon sits and
runs his fingers through his silver hair.

                          M.D.
                (he spits with contempt)

              That barbarous little Monkey!
              He has intimidated the dragon
               of the western district and
                  taken the Heavy Iron.
                               29

Mei steps up onto the platform and stands closer to the
sitting Dragon.

                             MEI

If he was produced by natural forces
of Hai-Wan, then I suggest you
                         indulge him.

She leans over him purposefully.

                             MEI

                      Summon him again.
                  He could still be useful.

The Metal Dragon is reluctant. He strokes his chin,
contemplating. Finally he nods.

Mei turns to leave, but as she approaches the door he
calls after her.

                             M.D.

                             Mei.

She stops, hand on door-handle. He chooses his words
carefully.

                             M.D.

Beware how you meddle with him.

He looks grave for a moment.

                             M.D.

You are but a mortal woman,...
                            (pause)

Mei takes note, but leaves with a slight air of defiance.

MONKEY looks up to see MEI step out of the darkness. Her

smiles.

                  I bring an order from

Monkey stands, lightened by Mei’s arrival.

They stand looking at one another for a moment. She eyes
Monkey curiously. Then she looks away as he continues to
stare at her.

She turns and walks out. Monkey moves to follow her.

INT: WHITE CAR - NIGHT
                                                       27
MEI enters the back of the White Car. She indicates to
the DRIVER to pull away. As the car pulls away, a brief
flash of a headlight and a glint of light on metal can be
seen in the darkness behind. The driver glances into his
mirror.

The car continues down dark roads. Mei gazes out the back
window. The headlight behind them gradually gets closer.
MONKEY slowly comes into view.

He is on a huge motorcycle. All the metalwork of the bike
is gold and highly polished. It is bulky with wide, fat
wheels and it dwarfs him as he holds his hands high on
the broad handlebars. Along the side of the fuel tank are
inscribed the words ‘THUNDER PEARL’ in bright red Kanji
characters.

Monkey is seen in his entirety for the first time. He
wears ordinary clothes - Orange T-shirt, Blue Jacket, and
                               31

Small Sunglasses - and has his HEAVY IRON holstered on
the side of his saddle. There is an elegance to his
posture and he is motionless as his hair is buffeted by
the wind. The passing tube lights create a strobe on the
reflective gold of the bike and in his shades.

Mei’s driver is wide-eyed at the sight of the huge gold
bike gliding along beside him and the bizarre sight of
Monkey’s smooth blue face peering in the back window at
Mei.

Mei controls herself, but is excited and sits forward to
watch Monkey advancing. She whispers to the driver.

                           MEI

                    You see nothing.

Monkey passes the car and speeds ahead into the darkness.

EXT: MOTORWAY TUNNEL - NIGHT
                                                          28
MONKEY is speeding through a traffic tunnel. He
encounters traffic. He manoeuvres around vehicles.

He glances back into the distance and sees Mei’s car
following.

Then, in his mirror, through traffic behind, he
momentarily catches sight of another motorcyclist,
darting between cars. He looks behind him, but sees
nothing.

Again he catches sight of the figure in his mirror. It is
closer this time, but disappears behind a vehicle in the
foreground.

Then Monkey looks around to see the figure pull out
directly behind him. The motorcyclist speeds up and
arrives parallel to him. On the other side of him a
second motorcyclist pulls up. They flank him, cruising on
either side. The first motorcyclist calls to him over the
noise of the traffic.

                        CYCLIST 1

Your time in the world of life is up!

Monkey accelerates and speeds ahead, but they catch up.
                            32

                        CYCLIST 1

                    Your name please!

                         MONKEY

                        My name?!

                        CYCLIST 1

                    Your name please!

A rifle shot rings out around the tunnel behind them and
they turn. Cars swerve aside to reveal Mei’s WHITE CAR
speeding towards them. Her car rams the back of one of
the bikes and forces them to pull over. Monkey circles to
a stop and Mei’s car swerves in front of them.

Irate drivers shout abuse and give them a wide berth.

MEI jumps from the back of the car and, slamming the door
behind her, she marches towards the two motorcyclists,
rifle raised. Without pause she turns and, swinging her
leg in a shoulder high kick, she catches one of the
bikers around the back of the head and knocks him to the
ground. At the end of the same turn, before the biker has
had time to react, she clamps his head on the ground
between her ankles and brings her rifle to rest on his
forehead. She rasps at him contemptuously;

                           MEI

His name is nothing to you!!
If you don’t know who he is,
why were you sent to him?
                      Who are you?!

The Biker glances at his companion. His companion is
standing rigidly in the sights of Monkey’s HEAVY IRON as
Monkey stands, still on his bike, beside Mei, holding his
Heavy Iron at arms length. The second biker answers,
without taking his eyes off Monkey.

                        CYCLIST 2

                   We are, ... judges.

                           MEI

                     Judges of whom?
                            33

                         (pause)
You were sent to judge him?
(She tosses her hair over her shoulder
               to indicate towards Monkey)

                     Who sent you?!

The bikers shoot glances at one another again.

                        CYCLIST 1

                          Yama.

                        CYCLIST 2

We are The Judges of Yama.

At the mention of Yama’s name Mei is momentarily lost for
words and her eyes widen but she quickly controls
herself. She presses her rifle harder into the biker’s
forehead and spits;

                           MEI

               This boy doesn’t come under
                     your jurisdiction!
                   He is immortal and is
                no longer subject to Yama!
                  He is beyond birth and
                        destruction!

A tear appears in her eye as she increases the pressure
of her rifle and her words roll slowly but lyrically from
her tongue.

                           MEI

                 He is, ... un-dead,...
                         (pause)
                 He is, ... Nos-Fera-Tu.

The first biker squirms and the second biker waves his
hands and shakes his head.

                        CYCLIST 1

                 Don’t lose your temper!
                 Don’t lose your temper!
It’s a case of mistaken identity.

                        CYCLIST 2
                               34

                     (through gasps)

                Yama has made a mistake.

                           MEI

               Yama never makes mistakes!!

A quick flash stops Mei and she looks up to see that they
are near the tunnel exit. Rows of security cameras start
whirring and a sequence of more flashes follows as they
are photographed.

Spread out on the table in front of her are the

The AIDE in white addresses Ms.Young.

              These photographs were taken
                    a few months ago.

He fans them out across the table.

At the time I added them to the file

... until I checked the Western District
                archives this morning and
                       found these.

Above the photos of the tunnel the Aide spreads out a
series of stills enhanced from a black and white security
video. In the photos there are two discernible
silhouettes, Monkey and Mei on Thunderpearl at the back
entrance to The Gold Hotel.

After the incident in the tunnel,
                later the same night, they
                     apparently entered
                     The Gold Hotel via
                    the staff entrance.

                        MS.YOUNG

And have they been seen since?

                        not yet.

                        MS.YOUNG
                         (sighs)

This pair seem to appear only
                 once every few years,...
              they seem to just materialise
                and then disappear again.

                 I know there’s crime at
              the centre of their activity.

Ms.Young leans forward and looks more closely at the
photographs.

                    He should be destroyed
                      for his behaviour!

                           MONKEY

                      I am beyond that!
                              37

                           MEI
                  (calming the dragon)

                        Stop! ...
                    You can watch his
                  behaviour as much as
                 you want, because he’s
                      here now, ...
                   (her voice breaks)

                        ... and he
                    is to be given an
                  immortal appointment.

She glances back at Monkey with a reassuring smile. Her
eyes grow moist for a moment and then she composes
herself.

                          M.D.
                        (slowly)

                             Yes.

They all wait for a beat.

Then Monkey breaks the silence, taking a breath and
asking, cockily.

                            MONKEY

              So, what class of appointment
                         is this?

                       BLUE DRAGON
                     (dismissively)

It doesn’t come in any class.

                            MONKEY

I suppose it’s too high to count
                 as being in any class.

                       BLUE DRAGON

On the contrary, it’s too low.

                            MONKEY

Too low? What do you mean?!
                            38

The JUDGES OF YAMA enter behind him. He turns to see them
and Mei stands closer to him. Monkey narrows his eyes and
gives them all a dirty look.

                         MONKEY
                   (under his breath)

So, that’s what you think of me.

Standing back, he waves his HEAVY IRON and raises his
voice.

                         MONKEY

                      How dare you!

The Judges jump forward and restrain him. Mei grapples
with them but The Metal Dragon raises his hand and calls
curtly to her.

                          M.D.

                          Mei!

She falls back, looking forlornly towards The Metal
Dragon.

The Judges tighten their grip and Monkey gasps and stares
The Metal Dragon in the eye.

The Metal Dragon stands and slowly walks towards Monkey.
Mei steps aside and watches him, wide-eyed.

                          M.D.
                        (coolly)

They’re not afraid of you here,
                       not with me.

He moves smoothly, as if he is hovering. A stillness
falls over everything and the strobe outside the window
once again flashes across his cool blue face and silver
hair, becoming hypnotic, reflecting in his eyes.

The Judges of Yama hold Monkey very still and Monkey
tries to match The Metal Dragon’s steady gaze. The Metal
Dragon leans very close and whispers through his teeth.

                          M.D.
                        (slowly)
                            39

                 Your youth is preserved.
                You will live indefinitely
and you will feel no pain.
                            (pause)
                  But Yama can still send
                    a messenger that will
                         destroy you.
             With this messenger comes fire.
                      Not common fire or
                 celestial fire, but fire
                     that springs up from
                   within you and reduces
               your whole frame to ashes!!

Monkey’s gaze flags a little as he is disturbed by The
Metal Dragon’s words.

                          M.D.

               The messenger is The Beast.

He moves closer still and is almost inaudible to all but
Monkey.

                          M.D.

The Beast only comes for immortals,
and only immortals can see it,...
and you’ll know when you have seen it,
and when it has seen you.

He stands back and flares his eyes. Then he indicates to
the Judges and they loosen their grip. Monkey falls for a
moment, distracted by The Metal Dragon’s words. Mei
rushes to him.

Then The Metal Dragon walks away and dismisses them both.

                          M.D.

                    Escort them out.

They sit by a tinted window. Places are set. There is a
phone on the wall beside MEI.

The WAITER approaches. Mei jumps up and blocks the
entrance, ordering the waiter away before he sees inside.
She glances back at Monkey.

She adjusts the folding screen and sits.

MONKEY, still distracted, is about to speak when Mei
suddenly reaches over and smacks him hard in the face.
His shades go flying across the table with a clatter and
he is mortified. She scolds him;

                             MEI

                       What do you expect
if you drive off into a
                  floodlit tunnel like that!
                   Of course the judges are
                       going to find you!

Monkey’s lower lip wobbles and he grows flushed as he
fumbles through the cutlery to retrieve his shades. As
she does so Mei reaches across and strokes his face.

                             MEI

                  You must be more careful.

Monkey regains his composure but after a moment becomes
dejected. Mei sits back, regretting her temper.

Monkey gazes into the street with a wistful expression.

                            MONKEY
                           (sighs)

The Metal Dragon has no idea
how to make use of me.
He sees what I am but all
he can do is taunt me.

                             MEI
                      (understandingly)

                           I know.

                         MONKEY

He has no regard for talent.

He looks back at Mei. She changes her tone and tries to
be supportive and cheerful.

                           MEI
                     (theatrically)

             ‘Great sage, equal of heaven’!,
That’s a title for someone like you.

But her face soon drops and she becomes pensive again.

                           MEI

                  I must speak to him.

She goes to the phone on the wall and picks up the
receiver.

As she does so her movement reveals a party of DRAGONS
leaving the restaurant. She is oblivious to them.

Monkey collects himself and gives her his attention.

                             MEI

                    I said that you should

but without any special duties, ...
                      ... and he agreed.

Monkey is glad for a moment and holds Mei’s hand. But he
is still troubled.

                             MEI

                  What are you afraid of?

Monkey glances out the window again.

He watches as the YELLOW CAR drives into the distance. It
turns a corner and disappears from sight.

Mei waits for a beat, then she stands and says, matter of
factly;

                             MEI

                 You’d better keep yourself
out of sight for a while,
it’s not safe around here now, ...
                 and I have some unfinished
                    business to attend to.

She brushes down her jacket, then leans forward and
strokes his face again. A slight tone of reprimand
returns to her voice.

                             MEI

                       You have to be

She exits the snug, leaving Monkey staring into the
street.
                              43

Monkey sits still for a few more beats, frustrated.

Then, with an intake of breath, he stands and marches
purposefully out of the snug towards the staff area.

MEI slides quietly into the back of the car. She lies
back, relaxing for a moment in the air-conditioned

listening to the soothing hum of traffic that filters
through the padded surrounds of the car interior. She
reclines.

She is ever the panther, even in repose.

The small BLACK CASE is on the seat beside her.

She gestures to the DRIVER. The car begins to pull away.

Then the sudden revving of an engine breaks the hum of
the traffic around her and she starts.

MONKEY suddenly pulls up on his bike beside the car. He
looks in the window at Mei. She is startled. She
indicates the people and the streets and she winds down
the window.

                              MEI

He disappears into a tunnel.

the hotel. There is no sign of GUBO’s body.

MS.YOUNG is all attention. A report can be heard from a
radio in the background.

                            REPORT

He’s on the other side of the island!

Ms.Young rolls her eyes and exclaims;

                           MS.YOUNG

How did he get from one side of the

Through the doors of The Gold Hotel MONKEY can be seen
approaching on his bike from outside. He drives up the
steps and slows as he approaches the doors. Bing-Bong of
the sliding doors as they open. Monkey draws his HEAVY
IRON and drives into the foyer. STAFF gasp and withdraw.

MEI arrives at the front desk, flushed and out of breath.
She stops dead when she sees him. No one dares approach
him. He drives across the marble floor, to the elevator
bay. Mei and the staff stand still, their eyes glued to
him as he passes.

Rachmaninoff plays lightly in the background.

MS.YOUNG stares out the window. She takes a breath and
stands to attention. She rolls up her sleeves.

A delivery boy enters the office. He puts a colour print
on the desk. It is the front page of a newspaper.

                         DELIVERY BOY

                  Early cover story for
                    tomorrow’s paper.

Ms.Young turns the print over. It is a full-page colour
photograph of Monkey outside the Gold Hotel on his bike.
It is derived from an amateur video still and the colour
breakdown is crude. Monkey’s blue skin seems artificial
in the gaudy colours of the print. Most of the text on
the page is Kanji, but the headline, in English, reads;
‘THE BLUE-RIDER!’

                           MS.YOUNG

In the dark abstract space, The METAL DRAGON stands.
Cathode rays still play on him from the background as he
walks away. He is pensive.

Then another voice echoes through the darkness, a sultry,
whispering female voice.

                           VOICE

                     What shall we do

The Metal Dragon strokes his chin.

Red evening light filters through the thick glass of the
hotel reception area, falling in pools across the cool
marble floor.

STAFF and passers-by hang around. In the background
police take notes and examine the scene. A MAN in a white
coat examines the floor of the foyer.

The reception staff are lined up and MEI is inspecting
them, giving them stern instructions in confidence. She
marches over to the DOORMAN and, standing close, she
speaks curtly to him.

                            MEI

                     You know nothing.

She turns and walks away towards the restaurant.

                                                        62
MONKEY is concealed in the corner of the snug. On the
table are the remains of a meal. The fish on the platter
is untouched.

MEI enters. She pulls over the screen at the entrance.
She sits opposite and looks at Monkey disapprovingly. He
is pensive. There is a long silence. She is a little more
cautious this time.

He avoids her eyes and plays with the fish. Mei grabs a
knife from the cutlery and points it at him, scowling.

                             MEI

              You think you’re invincible?
                          Well,...
I could cut your head off
right now and put it on
              that platter with that fish,
                 then what would you do?!

Monkey is unimpressed and again Mei regrets her anger.

                           MEI
               (with a conciliatory tone)

              You must look after yourself.
(she reaches across and strokes his face)
                  You may live forever,
(she plunges the knife into the fish’s head)
                    But not like this.

She looks away and clears her throat. He plays with the
fish a little more. There is another awkward silence.

Then she says, cautiously;

                             MEI

The square, today, ... The body.

She looks up and adds, hesitantly;

                             MEI

                    Is there another?

Monkey nods. She sighs and looks away again.

                             MEI
                            52

                       Another,...
                        un-dead?

                         MONKEY

                          Yes.

He takes her hand. His blue skin is smooth on her white
hand.

                           MEI

                    Where is he now?

Monkey pauses to gather his thoughts, then he leans
across the table and whispers;

                         MONKEY

                  Beneath the subways.

Mei looks at him blankly, she doesn’t understand.

                           MEI

                    What do you mean?
               What’s beneath the subways?

He slowly makes a sweeping gesture towards the ground, in
theatrical, slightly regal manner, and smiles.

                         MONKEY

                       Remember,...
A day above is a decade below?
                          (pause)
Well, it works both ways. A day on
these streets is a decade beneath
                 the subways. Down there,
I have all the time in the world.

A wave of realisation crosses Mei’s face and she grows
flushed.

                         MONKEY

Down there, now, my new brother
is waiting. Waiting, as I waited
                  and watched for years.
                            53

He thinks again and then strokes her hand. She holds his
hand tighter but is worried.

                         MONKEY

                         Mei, ...
                 Down there, we can have
all the time in the world.

He reaches out and takes her hand again, holding it up
and looking at her white skin. He looks thoughtfully into
her eyes.

Then she pulls away again. She avoids his look.

Monkey is disappointed and he eases back. He looks aside
for a moment and then his face grows stern.

Then he reaches out and strokes her long, dark hair,
letting a lock of it lie across his blue palm. Thin
strands of silver hair, scattered through her dark mane,
now become apparent at closer quarters. They shimmer a
little in the orange evening light.

Monkey looks deeper into her eyes. She pulls away. He
adds, with a slightly urgent tone;

                          MONKEY
              (his voice breaking slightly)

                          Mei, …
                   I don’t want you to
                 grow old and die while
                  I stay young forever.

She still avoids his eyes. She becomes defensive.

                           MEI
                     (dismissively)

                         Well,...
what can you do about it?

In one fluid movement, Monkey stands, reaches for his
HEAVY IRON, and swings it around, at full arms length,
bringing it in line with her face. She is startled but
quickly reacts and ducks out of the way as he ends his
movement by firing without a moments pause. She throws
herself from the chair as the back of it is splintered by
the shot. She looks up at him for a second in disbelief
and then, with a muffled shout, she starts to run.

She runs into the cosmetics shop.

The shop has closed for the night and is empty. MEI runs
through the aisles of the cosmetics department. She turns
one way and then another. She pauses and looks behind
her, wide-eyed.

The headlight of MONKEY’s bike flares around the corner
of a counter as he drives around the shop. He slows down
and walks, still on his bike, through the shop, the
vibrations of its engine rippling through the glassware
on the shelves.

Mei spies him and ducks behind a pillar by the inside of
the display window.

She bolts out the main door of the shop. Monkey catches
sight of her and drives smoothly towards the exit.

Bing-Bong of sliding doors as MONKEY emerges into the
street.

MEI is running ahead, across the road. Monkey’s bike
circles and comes to a halt as he rests his foot on the
ground.

Mei runs towards a telephone box. She is scuffed by a
car. The driver shouts. She stumbles but gains pace again
and reaches the other side of the street.

Monkey aims through traffic.
                              55

Mei enters the phone box, picks up the mouthpiece and
starts dialing.

Monkey raises his HEAVY IRON and fires as he walks across
the street, shattering the glass of the phone box.

Mei dials again. Monkey arrives at the phone box and
reaches in through the broken glass with his Heavy Iron.

MEI’s hair and clothing have been blown from behind. She
has been propelled forward.

She turns and stands upright. Her skin is a deep, deep

As she turns, a dark stain on her clothing is revealed.
It turns black and starts to spread quickly over her
torso.

She stands and sways.

The shadow of Monkey moves across the broken glass.

Through darkness, smooth blue skin moves past, dimly lit.
The curve of a blue back turns. Long shiny hair falls
across the curve of a blue cheek. Purple lips touch the
cheek. There is a long intake of breath and Mei’s voice
whispers.

                              MEI

                     You smell like death.

Her face turns and a momentary faint red hue highlights
the contours of her face, making her blue skin dark and
rich.
                              56

Monkey’s voice whispers;

                            MONKEY

                 We both smell like death.

MONKEY and MEI’s eyes glisten in the gloom as they stand

Mei asks, still a little disoriented.

                             MEI

                       Where are we?

                          MONKEY
                        (whispers)

                   Beneath the subways.

They listen.

In the stillness and darkness of the tunnel, a distant,
phased sound, amplified by the curved walls of the
tunnel, sounds like the sea - A cool, refreshing, almost
soothing sound.

                            MONKEY

The sea lies on every side.

Mei moves forward and closer to the curved walls.

Emerging from the sound of the sea, are layers of
distant, familiar, yet distorted sounds, like the hum of
traffic and the grinding of city life slowed to an almost
imperceptible pace.

Mei shivers a little and steps back.
                            57

She darts her eyes around, squinting and trying to gauge
their direction.

                          MONKEY

We won’t see round this corner

She moves forward.

                           MEI

                         Why not?

              Because there isn’t one, ...
                   only a slow curve.

                           MEI

                     How do you know?

Monkey turns and gives her a wry look.
Mei smiles.

                          MONKEY

A day above is a decade below?
Remember, I spent years down here.
                         (pause)

               My time in the underworld.

She looks at the ground under her feet. Beneath her glass
shoes, through broken flagstones and girders, there is
running water.

                          MONKEY

The water that flows under us comes
                from the western district.

Mei looks up at the dark, curved ceiling.

                          MONKEY

                  And above us - water.
              Hundreds of leagues of water.

Along the ceiling, seemingly from the darkness behind
them, a second, darker, reverberating sound slips past –
                             58

like a low pitched intake of breath from above. A
momentary breeze blows Mei’s hair.

Monkey’s forehead tightens. He moves back.

                           MONKEY

This is the frontier of Hai-Wan,…

                  the ‘Bay of Thunder’.

Mei moves closer to Monkey. He puts his arm around her.
They continue to listen to the distant sea for a few
moments.

Excitement rises in Mei’s voice as she whispers closer.

                             MEI

Just think what we can do,...

MONKEY speeds along on his bike. MEI sits behind him,
holding his waist, looking around him at the road ahead.
Her hair flaps behind her in the wind, she is
exhilarated.

Monkey glances over his shoulder at Mei and she flashes
him a flirtatious smile. She laughs. He calls across the
wind to her;

                           MONKEY

                        What’s funny?

She mouths back, silently;

                             MEI

                          Nothing.

Ahead of them the ‘FOREVER MOTOR COMPANY’ bay window can
be seen casting bright yellow light across the empty
street.

They slow as they near the entrance. Then they turn and

glide quietly in through the gates of a schoolyard

EXTREME C.U.: A perfect sandy oval hovers in front of
glass. The oval nears and a face materializes.

A slender hand rises and a subtle purple line is drawn
under the arc of an eyebrow. The lid of a dark young eye
receives a layer of light silver blusher. The eye beneath
the lid glows with expectation.

PULL BACK:

In the dormitory of the school PALANKA, the beautiful
half-cast girl that was seen briefly with the Man in the
yellow suit, is standing in the dining area. She is a
little older. She is leaning over a mirror, preparing for
a night out.

There is movement from the adjoining rooms. Palanka
turns. From outside the door she hears a familiar voice.

                             VOICE

                         Palanka?

She answers with a smile;

                            PALANKA

                             Yes?

The door bursts open and GUBO rushes in, holding The
HEAVY IRON before him. Palanka shouts out, confused and
shocked;

                            PALANKA

                            Gubo?!
                              60

Palanka turns to run.

There is a thud and a blinding flash of light as Gubo
fires the Heavy Iron. As if wrenched by some great
invisible fist Palanka is propelled across the dining
area, the mirror and cosmetics clattering to the floor.
Stunned, she clambers to her feet and slides along the
wall, looking in disbelief at Gubo.

Her smooth brown skin is now a radiant sky blue and her
make-up shimmers against it. She looks down, feeling her
torso as black blood begins to spread like oil through
her clothes.

MEI enters close behind Gubo, her rifle blazing as she
comes. She fires into the air, shattering the plasterwork
of the ceiling.

Gubo tosses the Heavy Iron back to MONKEY as he enters
behind Mei.

Gubo rushes forward and holds Palanka close, as she
shakes, still in disbelief.

Confused figures begin to emerge from the dormitories.

The MAN in the yellow suit is standing in the bay window
of his FOREVER MOTOR COMPANY showrooms.

There is a flash of lightning. It is quickly followed by
another. He watches the lightning silently. Their
frequency accelerates until they are almost like a
firework display. The reflections of the flashes are
dazzling on the curved glass of the bay window.

MS.HOU approaches from behind. They both watch the
lightning for a few moments. Then Ms.Hou points and moves
her finger in a circling gesture around the rim of the
skyline. She pauses for thought.

                         MS.HOU

                  There is no thunder.

The METAL DRAGON stands. Silently he observes the
incidents in the dormitory on large screens in front of
him. Flashes from the screens light up his face. There
are the sounds of screaming and gunfire.

On the screen MONKEY can be seen moving into the
foreground, firing the HEAVY IRON and gritting his teeth.
MEI is laughing as she fires continuously into the air.
Her young blue face can be clearly seen.

Silhouettes of adolescents and school-kids run around
wildly in the foreground

The MAN in the yellow suit opens the bedroom door. The
lightning flashes silently in through the window to light
up the room.

The room is characteristically untidy. The bed is unmade.
With it’s sheets tossed to the ground it is clearly
empty.

He peers around the room.

                              MAN

                        Palanka?

There is no sign of anyone.

The Man in the yellow suit moves to the window. He looks
down into the street in front. His forehead tightens.

The display area where the multitude of bikes was
normally displayed is now empty. Chains rattle as they
hang on the empty railings.

There are more close, silent flashes and the sound of
                            62

metal on metal draws his attention to the street
opposite. From the corner of his eye he catches movements
– shadowy figures disappear into the dark streets.

Across the street he sees the large gates of the
schoolyard open, swinging slowly on their hinges.

Lightning silently lights the scene.

In the dark abstract space, sitting in The Metal Dragon’s
chair, also observing the screen, is YAMA.

Her hair is long and dark, her skin supple and a deep
rich blue. Her eyes are large and vibrant. They are
GREEN.

The Metal Dragon stands behind Yama and ceremoniously
brushes out her long, shiny hair. He watches the screen
silently.

On the screens, Mei can be seen over Monkey’s shoulder as
they once again speed along through tunnels, a crowd of
kids now discernible behind them, waxing and waning in
the glinting of strip-lights playing on metal tubes and
engines.

The dark space is filled with the hollow whining of
Yakuza style muted engine revving as it echoes from the
wall of monitors like a swarm of hornets.

The Metal Dragon’s brushing of Yama’s hair slows. He is
moved by the sight of Mei’s young blue face at the head
of the entourage. With a sharp intake of breath his eyes
grow moist.

The Metal Dragon and Yama turn and lean closer. He turns
off the large screen with a remote. All goes quiet.

                           M.D.

                          Yama...

They lean their heads together and sit in the darkness

There is a large opening in darkness ahead.

Moving through the opening, a distant rumble arises in
the background.

There is the hum of engines, then silence. Voices mutter
uneasily and through the dimness young eyes glisten.

The headlight of a bike turns and falls across young blue
arms and faces, huddled together.

GUBO holds PALANKA close. They are surrounded by their
friends from the dormitory, all blue-skinned. They are
deathly silent.

Standing around them, their handles and mudguards curled
around one another, are the bikes from ‘The Forever Motor
Company’ showrooms.

Then a shadow falls across them.

MEI moves forward and materializes in the headlight.

She is a remarkable and beautiful sight, appearing like a
dark angel. Black bloodstained clothes hang like draped
seaweed over her shoulders and her long hair cascades
down her back like a horses mane. There is elegance yet
an animalism in her gait as she moves quietly towards
them on her shoes of glass, little prisms of light
                              64

refracting in them from the headlight behind.

The kids are mesmerized. As Mei arrives, she reaches
forward and wipes the tears from Palanka’s cheeks. Her
voice is quiet but close.

                              MEI

                 What are you afraid of?

She smiles and Palanka relaxes a little. She moves closer

There is a fountain in the middle of the square. Towering
neon facades create lurid light that undulates through
the water of the fountain. Insomniacs and cyber-kids sit
around in groups. Late night drivers bustle in the
surrounding streets.

The sound of radios playing in the background drifts

Behind the radios can be heard the distant rumbling.
People’s heads turn and conversations pause. In the lull
the rumbling can be heard more clearly. It rises and
begins to whine and pulsate, like a huge approaching
swarm of hornets and as it intensifies it becomes more
clearly the sound of approaching bike engines.

In the distant dark streets appears the hazy image of The
Blue-Riders. They gradually materialize. As they approach
the flashing neon lights begin to pick them out through
the rain.

MONKEY and MEI drive in front. Mei is now on her own
bike. Her bike is sleek and silver. Along the side of
it’s fuel tank are inscribed the words ‘BLUE FLOWER’ in
Kanji characters.

GUBO is to the right of Monkey and slightly behind, now
on his own bike also. His hair blows behind him and he
stands, excited as he drives. On the fuel tank of his
bike are inscribed the words ‘YELLOW CLOUD’ in Kanji
characters.

They stare ahead, motionless as their hair buffets in the
wind. They are followed by a motley crew, some on
motorbikes, some on ordinary bikes, some running. They
are generally teenagers and children, all blue-skinned.
There are dozens of them.

The lurid lights of The Valley create a staccato effect
that flashes on the metal of the bikes and weapons.

People in the square start to stand and squint. Some
gather their things, preparing to leave, but still
waiting, curious.

A police officer moves amongst the crowd. He calls for

Drivers are speechless at the bizarre sight.

PALANKA is a beautiful sight, walking into the centre of

graceful and her silky hair falls smoothly around her.
There is an unearthly richness and smoothness to her blue
skin. The toddlers file in behind her.

The gathering is now complete.

There is a daunting quiet. MONKEY scans the crowd coolly
from behind his shades.

There is a flash and a murmur, then more flashes as a
couple of JOURNALISTS barge their way to the front of the
crowd and start taking photographs.

Monkey and Mei don’t move. They are playing up to the
crowd, creating a circus atmosphere of anticipation.

Overhead can be heard the approaching sound of

MONKEY turns to the crowd, raising his HEAVY IRON to call
attention. There is silence as the congregation wait.

The bluish shell inlay of the pistol glows through
droplets of rainwater on it’s surface and an otherworldly
magnetism emanates from the object.

Monkey scans the crowd again. He moves restlessly as he
prepares to speak. He is slightly nervous. Then he
gathers himself.

He pauses for dramatic effect.

Behind him there is a disturbance.

NERO, a misfit with a large birthmark on his face and
curly, mousy hair, jostles with Palanka. Gubo intervenes
and pushes him away. Palanka backs away from Nero.

Mei snaps;

                             MEI

They stand to attention.

The stillness returns.

Monkey waits and his hands shake slightly on his

Then Mei calls across the square;

we claim this island as our own!

Then there is a shot from the back of the gathered riders
and a guffaw, followed by a ripple of laughter amongst
the smaller kids. Monkey darts around again, shouting;

                            MONKEY

                      Order! Order!
                    You little ones!

He scans the back row of kids. No response. He catches
NERO’s eye. Nero covers a smirk and looks down. Monkey
narrows his eyes and turns slowly back to the spectators.

Again, he waits, for dramatic effect, scanning the crowd.
The police and crowd wait in anticipation. The blue
flashing of the waiting police cars continues silently.

MEI watches MONKEY carefully, with one eye on the kids
behind them.

He raises his Heavy Iron and is about to resume when,
again, the silence is broken as he hears farting noises
and laughing coming from behind him. He turns and shouts.

                            MONKEY

                           Stop it!

There is a clatter and the kids surge forward, knocking
Monkey and Mei off balance. A giddy laughing rises
amongst the smaller kids.

                             MEI

                            Stop!

The rush subsides and they wait. The kids all stand still
and play dumb. Monkey and Mei eye them. Monkey tries to
                               71

appear stern but his concern is apparent.

They turn back to the crowd.

Immediately the kids surge forward again. Monkey and Mei
struggle to control their bikes, shouting orders at the
kids.

Sticks and crude weapons are momentarily wielded and
thrown as the group clears a circle.

In the middle of the circle, washing in and out of the
neon lights and rain, there are two kids locked in a
struggle. The bigger kid has the smaller kid’s head in an
arm-lock and they swing pointlessly, shouting. A stone is
thrown and hits the aggressor in the forehead with a
thud. The kid pulls back, the other kid laughs. There is
a trickle of black blood from the cut where the stone
hit. They both laugh. Then Nero throws a knife from the
crowd and it sticks in the smaller kids arm. Looking
around, bemused, they all laugh.

Mei becomes grave. She raises her rifle and fires. They
stop. She looks at Nero sternly and then holds all the
kids attention. Monkey stands over them.

As they wait, Palanka and Gubo pace up and down. Gubo
moves closer to her and puts his arm around her waist.
They move away from the kids.

As they move, Palanka passes over an air vent in the
platform and a light refreshing breeze blows up from
below. It lifts her skirt slightly and blows her hair.
She pauses and, for a moment, closing her eyes, she
enjoys the air as it caresses her legs. Gubo runs his
hand over her thigh and she smacks his hand away. Then
she smiles and Gubo holds her and kisses her on the neck.

Nero watches quietly from the group as Gubo kisses
Palanka. He watches enviously.

Then the air subsides and Palanka opens her eyes.
The moment has passed and Nero looks away.

The light rain continues to wash across the scene through
the lurid lights of the square.

Monkey revs his engine to call attention again and the
kids grow still.

Mei turns back to the crowd. There is a murmur. She holds
                               72

her rifle in the air.

There is a hush. Then there is the sound of the
helicopter overhead. Monkey glances up.

They are surrounded by kids, charging at each other in

metal as weapons and bikes collide. Monkey, Mei, Gubo and
Palanka are pushed around, out of control in the flashing

To the onlookers the scene is silhouetted against neon

                              74

NERO passes quickly in front of him. There is a sudden
‘swoosh’ and a clang of metal on metal is heard, right
beside Gubo’s head. He starts and turns. Nero is right
beside him.

PALANKA has blocked the path of a weapon that was heading
straight for Gubo’s head. Nero laughs and turns to parry
a blow from elsewhere. Gubo is relieved and his attention
returns to manoeuvering through the throng, but he stops
and looks after Palanka. She turns and looks back at him.

The MAN in the yellow suit is sitting in the same room in
which Monkey first visited him.

In the background can be heard the sounds of television
coverage of the town square. The Man pauses, his tie half
done. He walks slowly towards the television in the far
corner of the room.

There is a sense of energy subsiding. Smoke spirals rise
from discarded weapons. There is the occasional chatter
but the overall resonance of voices has passed.

MONKEY and MEI meet in the middle of the square,
surrounded by debris. They circle each other slowly on
their bikes.
                             76

                         MONKEY
                   (under his breath)

We’ve got to get out of this.

GUBO and NERO circle close behind them. Monkey turns and
barks at Nero.

                         MONKEY

                  You started all this!
We could have had this under
                control if you hadn’t put
                  ideas in their heads!

Nero goes red-faced and backs away.

Gubo moves closer to Monkey. Monkey puts his hand on
Gubo’s shoulder.

Nero stands at a distance.

Mei wipes her forehead and looks around. She is tired.
She scans the ring of observers.

The police still hold them back. The blue light of the
waiting police cars continues to flash across the scene.

Mei looks up. She sees the helicopter still hovering
above.

                           MEI
                         (sighs)

I wish we could go home.

Amidst the wreckage there is still activity. MONKEY and
MEI part and circle the outside of the remaining foray,
contemplating their next move. PALANKA paces in the
centre, weapon raised.

The MAN in the yellow suit approaches the edge of the
police cordon. Palanka turns and sees him. She pauses and
lowers her weapon. He appears forlorn from a distance
through rising smoke trails. She is remorseful. She
manoeuvres through bodies and her movement is graceful as
she approaches him. She circles to a stop in front of him
and all goes quiet, the remnants of the battle noise
subsiding. She speaks softly and her voice is close.

                           PALANKA

                       Father ...

She bows her head and her hair falls forward. She pauses
for a moment and then lifts her head again, tossing her
hair back. She is flushed.

                           PALANKA

There is something in the wind
out over the bay tonight, father.
(she runs her hand through the horse’s mane)
It sounds and smells and tastes
               like death, ...but it isn’t.
                          (pause)

                     It’s in the air.

She turns. A tear appears in the eye of the Man in the
yellow suit.

                              MAN

                         I know.

Palanka looks around to see some remaining children
pausing and dropping their weapons to approach the other
DRAGONS. They all stand in silent communion. The blue
lights of the police cars continue to flash across the
scene.

MONKEY and MEI watch the scene from the middle of the
square as they continue to circle each other on their
bikes. Monkey stops.

He looks to the four dragons and the children standing in
front of them.

                         MONKEY

                 We’ll have to give them
                   back to the dragons.

Mei looks around, saddened.

                              MEI

                           Yes.
                  The dragons can help
                   them better than we
                        can, now.

                                                       107
MS. YOUNG is sitting at her desk. She is pensive,
following the events of the square. A few officers stand
around behind.

On a large monitor can be seen a video surveillance image
of MONKEY, MEI and GUBO. People have retreated, clearing
a space around GUBO. Through the flashing neon and rain
the colour breakdown of the image is crude and the blue
of his skin bleeds across the screen. Ms.Young flicks to
a zoom-lens image to get a clearer view of Gubo.

                         MS.YOUNG
           (slowly points towards the screen,
                    recognising Gubo)

                              79

She looks at the other officers. She snaps;

                           MS.YOUNG

               That’s the boy from today!

                       All right!
Now we have them on something.
                     Let’s move in.

The children stand around opposite the DRAGONS in the
corners of the battlefield.

Suddenly the spell is broken, there is a whistle and
police break the cordon to move forward. The commotion
returns as the remaining children run. PALANKA turns and
bolts. NERO runs to follow her.

MONKEY, MEI and GUBO, join Palanka and Nero and flee from
the square, followed by the remaining kids.

They head for the Subway exit from which Palanka first
appeared.

They slip easily past the police who are pre-occupied
with attending to the carnage left in their wake.

                  300 hours and 30 minutes!

Ms.Young jumps to attention and barks orders. Officers
run into her office.

                          MS.YOUNG

                Set up checkpoints on the
              bridges as soon as possible!

There is activity as people respond to her instructions.

                          MS.YOUNG

              But I want aerial surveillance
                of the bridges immediately.
                 They could emerge from the
subways at any one of the bridges
              within the next 15/20 minutes.

Calls are made.

Ms.Young and her officers turn their attention to a line
of monitors above the larger monitor. There are the
voices of pilots reporting through static.

                           PILOTS

                     Western bridge,...
                   ... Eastern bridge,...

The screens begin to relay the images of the bridges from
the helicopter surveillance cameras.

On the first screen can be seen the entrance to a tunnel
on the coastline, under one of the bridges. The front of
THUNDERPEARL appears at the tunnel entrance. MONKEY peers
out.

The monitor switches to close-up. Monkey‘s blue face
darts back into the tunnel.

                           PILOT 1

                The Blue-Rider sighted at
              the western tunnel entrance,
           3 hours 30 minutes and 25 seconds!

Ms.Young is astonished and exclamations of surprise can
be heard from the officers.

the reports from the other helicopters scanning the

              the eastern tunnel entrance,
               30 minutes and 35 seconds!

Ms.Young and her officers look around, amazed.

                         MS.YOUNG
                   (totally perplexed)

                   How can he get from

                            MONKEY

                       I don’t know,...

He kicks down the stand of his bike.

                            MONKEY

                           But,...

He indicates to Mei to relax.

                            MONKEY

              ...there’s nothing to worry about,

He leans forward on his handlebars and, pointing to the
helicopters above, a slight, wry smile crosses his face.

                            MONKEY

They’ve no time to look for them.

In the mouth of the western subway entrance, opposite The
FOREVER MOTOR COMPANY showrooms, near the schoolyard and
overlooking the bay, MONKEY and MEI appear quietly in
                            83

silhouette. They scan the horizon and see the helicopters
hovering over the four corners of the island, waiting.

GUBO and PALANKA emerge close behind them. They are on
Gubo’s bike, Palanka sitting on the back with her arms
around him. They observe, over Monkey and Mei’s
shoulders.

Monkey leans forward and runs his finger around the rim
of the bay.

                         MONKEY

                    They’ve no idea.

He turns to Mei and smiles. She is relieved and beams.
They lean towards each other across their bikes.

                         MONKEY

                They’ll never find them.

They kiss.

In the dark recesses their blue faces are lit from below
by their entwined headlights.

               (with an air of dejection)

                  No further sightings.

They wait in silence for a few more moments, listening to
static. Nothing.

Ms.Young stands and paces. She walks to the window. She
is frustrated. There is silence from her officers. She
                            84

switches the channels on the monitors back and forth
between the four tunnel entrances. They all appear empty.

                        MS.YOUNG
                      (impatiently)

                       Nothing,...
                       Nothing,...

She turns again and looks out across the cityscape.
Sirens can still be heard in the distance.

CROSSFADE:

INT: DARKNESS
                                                         118
MONKEY and MEI sleep with the children beneath the
subways. The little bodies are curled around one another,
little rib cages rising and falling, bathed in the light
from Monkey and Mei’s bikes. In the distance can be heard
the rumble of the ocean all around them.

GUBO and PALANKA lie together. Nearby lies NERO. He is
awake and looks enviously at Palanka and Gubo.

Palanka turns drowsily. Gubo runs his hand on her legs,
then rests his head on her shoulder.

Nero looks up and scowls. Then he hears movement and he
lies back, feigning sleep.

Mei’s eye opens.

Mei lifts her head and peers into the darkness. She sits
up.

The light from the bikes converges in the dirt just
outside the circle of sleeping figures. Mei is drawn to
the light. She moves forward and crawls through the
sleeping figures. She arrives in the centre of the pool
of light. She leans forward, gazing around.

There appears to be a trail of prints in the dirt. She
looks closer. They look like the traces of claws and
footpads. There is an erratic pattern to them and they
are surrounded by drag marks. She is un-nerved.

She scans the area again and looks towards the bike.

THUNDERPEARL’s gold curves slope away sharply into
                              85

darkness behind it’s glowing headlight. The surface of
the light has been broken by something that is unclear
from Mei’s distance.

Mei crawls across the dirt in front of the bike, wiping
away the drag marks. She nears the light and her face
rests inches away from the curved glass surface. Her
shadow increases behind her and shrouds the sleeping
kids.

From the surface of the glass she picks an object. She
holds it in her palm. It is a single long thin silver
hair. She turns it this way and that. It catches the
light, shimmering like the insect wing shell of the Heavy
Iron, glowing almost like a fibre-optic.

The distant rumble of the ocean disappears and a heavy
silence descends.

INDETERMINABLE TIME PASSES:

Then she opens her palm a little wider and, caught by
some momentary air current spiraling down from above, the
silver hair slips away.

Then, in the background, there is another stirring. She
looks back.

Monkey’s eye opens. Mei calls softly across the figures
to him.

                              MEI

                    Can’t you sleep?

                         MONKEY

                              No.

She crawls back through the sleeping figures and returns
to him.

Monkey sits up beside her. She runs her hand on his back
to comfort him.

                              MEI

                     Neither can I.

Monkey looks her in the eye for a moment and then
confides in her, his voice breaking slightly.
                                 86

                              MONKEY

                           I am afraid.

He looks away, ashamed. She strokes his face.

                                MEI

                              I know.

                              MONKEY

While you slept, I had a dream.
                     (pause, he shudders)
A silence fell over everything, ...
silence so profound it frightened me.

                                                      118a
MONKEY and MEI are sleeping. Monkey’s eye opens.

                              MONKEY
                              (O.C.)

                         I closed my eyes.

He closes his eyes.

INSERT: INT: AIRPORT - DAY FLASH FORWARD
                                                      118b
In the departure lounge, MONKEY is moving away from
something in the crowd, with a terrified expression on
his face.

                              MONKEY
                              (O.C.)

                     I closed my eyes,...
But I could still see through
                          my eyelids.

CUT BACK:
                                                      118c
He turns and looks into Mei’s eyes. He hesitates and then
finally says, his voice breaking;

                              MONKEY

                   I could see the beast.
                              87

He tilts his head wearily and Mei moves closer to comfort
him. She embraces him and over his shoulder her eyes grow
moist. With a sharp intake of breath, she smiles.

                              MEI
                           (softly)

                          Remember,...
The Metal Dragon is quite willing to
let you be ‘Sage, equal of heaven’.

Monkey reflects. She strokes his shoulder.

                            MONKEY

... and how time is for him,
he may well still be waiting.

                             MEI

                     We should go to him.

They remain in each others arms in the stillness and
silence.

Then, through the empty darkness, another sound can be
heard, sliding around the curved tunnel, as if spiraling
down from above. It is mingled with the slow hum and
pulsating rhythm of the city life above, but fainter,
sending pre-echoes before it. It is a phased, sultry,
whispering, female voice.

                            VOICE

                    Do you remember a time
before we came to this place?

The faint sound of the ocean continues to rise and fall
in the background.

INT: POLICE HEADQUARTERS - NIGHT
                                                       119
A bar of pale blue smoke hangs across the middle of the
room, dispersing and lying low over the table. MS.YOUNG
paces back and forth at the head of the table. She takes
a drag of her cigarette.

She leans forward over the table and looks out across the
                               88

map of the island. She places a large marker on the map,
in the middle of the island.

                        MS.YOUNG

             The Blue-rider was first sighted
at the entrance to the Gold Hotel
               this morning, shortly before
                he appeared in Dian-Yin Gu.
                          (pause)
               Is anybody familiar with the
                        Gold Hotel?

There is awkward movement amongst the officers, no
answers.

                        MS.YOUNG

                  I’ve eaten out alot on
                     this island, ...
... but I’ve never heard any reports
             of the Gold Rooftop Restaurant.

                           AID

It’s been there a long time,...
as long as I’ve been aware.

Ms.Young moves through the carpet of smoke and it curls
around her as she approaches the window. She gazes
thoughtfully across the night-time cityscape.

                        MS.YOUNG
(taking a drag of her cigarette)

If like breeds like and there is something
in the idea that we can connect mysteries, ...
that may lead us to the crime.

Ms.Young stubs out her cigarette.

                        MS.YOUNG

                     The Gold Hotel!
                 That’s where we start!

EXT: SUBWAY ENTRANCE - NIGHT
                                                      120
MONKEY and MEI emerge cautiously from the subway,
                            89

opposite the ‘FOREVER MOTOR COMPANY’ bike showrooms.
GUBO, PALANKA and NERO emerge quietly behind them on
their bikes.

                         CAPTION:

                          3:35AM
                    Hour Of The Tiger

Palanka darts across the street towards the showrooms.
The others move along the street in the shadows, away
from the streetlights.

Gubo glances over to see Palanka disappear quietly into
the side entrance of the showrooms.

INT: RED HOUSE - NIGHT
                                                       121
The RED DRAGON is sitting in his living room, watching
television. His head turns toward the door as he senses
movement.

A BLUE CHILD with a RED HAT walks into the room. The
Dragon is taken by surprise. The child stands, obviously
nervous and feeling strange in an unfamiliar, forgotten
environment. The Dragon is moved and rushes forward. He
holds the child close.

The child is shy and makes strange. Hesitantly, it
speaks, like lines rehearsed.

                          CHILD

                   You have to take us
                          away.

The Dragon leans back and looks at the child.

                          CHILD

                  You must take us off
                       the island.

One by one, several other blue children enter the room.

A knowing expression crosses the Dragon’s face and he
holds his own child close.

EXT: MOTORWAY - NIGHT
                                                        122
MONKEY and MEI cruise smoothly on the motorway. GUBO
follows. A little further behind them is NERO. The
evening has nearly passed, the red hue on the horizon
diminishing. Darkness proper sets in.

The engines rumble. Their bikes manoeuvre gracefully. For
a few moments they feel free and enjoy the freshness of
the night air, blowing their hair.

Mei’s voice is heard softly in voice-over;

                             MEI
                           ( V.O.)

                Hai-Wan is for spirits and
              the underworld is for ghosts.

The buildings become progressively taller and more
brightly lit as they near the centre of the city. The
endless streetlights become hypnotic as they pass by.

                             MEI
                           ( V.O.)

So darkness and light must have
                    their succession.

The GOLD HOTEL finally looms in the distance.

                             MEI
                           ( V.O.)

                For the dead travel fast.

INT: HOTEL FOYER - NIGHT
                                                       123
STAFF go about their business for the evening. The ground
floor restaurant is closed. Ravel plays lightly over the
P.A. in the background.

Bing-Bong of sliding doors as MS.YOUNG enters. She is
followed by four officers. They approach the front desk,
looking around.

MS.HOU emerges from behind screens. The staff stand back
as she approaches Ms.Young. Directly in front of her, on
                            91

the desk, is a notice. It reads; ‘VACANCY’.

Ms.Hou is still wearing her WHITE NECK-BAND.

                        MS.YOUNG

                 Good evening Miss. ,...
              (she looks at her name-badge)
                        Miss Hou.

Ms.Hou stares at her intently. Ms.Young is slightly un-
nerved. The atmosphere becomes very still. Then Ms.Hou
speaks, her voice quiet, but close.

                         MS.HOU

                 What would you like to
                     learn from me?

                        MS.YOUNG

                 Whatever you think fit.
                          (pause)
                   What can you tell us
                     about this hotel?

                         MS.HOU

                        Nothing.

                        MS.YOUNG

What can you tell us about the
                    Gold Restaurant?

                         MS.HOU

                        Nothing.

                         MS.YOUNG
                   (becoming restless)

Can you escort us to the Rooftop
                       Restaurant?

                          MS.HOU
                       (pointedly)

There is no lift to the
                Gold Rooftop Restaurant.
                               92

                          MS.YOUNG
                        (impatiently)

Ms.Hou, we have reason to believe
that this hotel is connected to the
                   events of today,...
                      and yesterday.
                          (pause)
We want to search this building, Ms.Hou,
and we need to know what you know...
                   Where can we start?

                            MS.HOU
                     (narrowing her eyes)

                Very well. Hotel Room 1.

Ms.Young indicates to the other men.

                           MS.YOUNG

Alright. We start in Room 1.

They move forward and Ms.Hou moves towards the elevator.

Bing-Bong as elevator doors slide open. They enter and
wait.

The doors slowly close over.

EXT: HOTEL - NIGHT
                                                       124
MONKEY, MEI, GUBO, and NERO round the corner at the back
of the hotel.

INT: HOTEL - NIGHT
                                                         125
MONKEY, MEI, GUBO, and NERO enter the kitchen area
through the staff entrance.

Nero goes for the light switch. Monkey barks at him;

                            MONKEY

                       No lights!
                We don’t want to attract
                     any attention.
                            93

Gubo searches the kitchen. He opens a cupboard and takes
out a box of candles. He systematically places them
around the kitchen, placing a large one in the middle of
the kitchen table.

Nero goes to the drawers. He takes out a box of matches.
He starts to light the candles. They create an eerie,
fluttering orange light around the room.

PALANKA re-enters. She has a CROSSBOW over one shoulder,
a SHOTGUN over the other, and carries a LARGE SWORD in
her arms. She piles them onto the kitchen table with a
clatter. She is sweating and out of breath. Gubo puts his
arm around her. The candles create a gold glow on the
metal of the weapons. She then looks at everyone gravely.

Palanka produces a rolled up newspaper. She unfolds it on
the table and the others draw around. On the front page
is a full colour photograph of what at first looks like a
battleground. It is the town square. On closer inspection
can be seen blue bodies and severed limbs strewn around.
The headline reads; ‘MASSACRE IN THE VALLEY OF
ELECTRICITY’

Monkey places his HEAVY IRON on the table beside the
other weapons. Mei produces her RIFLE. They check and
prepare their weapons ceremoniously.

Monkey and Mei holster their weapons and check
themselves. They prepare to leave.

Mei turns to the kids.

                           MEI

               We have some business with
                    The Metal Dragon.

Remember, we’ll be gone for some time,...
                       maybe years.
(She hugs Palanka and kisses her on the cheek)
                 Take care of yourselves.

Monkey hugs Gubo. Then Monkey and Mei march purposefully
down the dark corridor towards the staff elevator bay.

Bing-Bong of sliding doors as Monkey and Mei exit.

The kids stand in the stillness of the kitchen for a few
moments. Then Palanka sighs and turns. She looks at Nero.
                              94

She is about to say something but then she dismisses him
and turns away, moving closer to Gubo.

Nero sinks to his knees. He puts his head in his hands
and his voice breaks.

                          NERO

I wish we could go home.

Nero cries.

INT: HOTEL CORRIDOR - NIGHT
                                                       126
Bing-bong of elevator doors opening. MS.YOUNG steps out
first. She is followed by the others. They stand out
warily, looking around.

MS.HOU emerges. She leads the way down the corridor.
Everything is eerily quiet.

Ms.Hou arrives at Room 1. They all come to a stop. The
four officers are now uncharacteristically nervous. The
strange atmosphere is apparent to them all.

With slow deliberation, Ms.Hou turns the handle and
pushes the door inwards. There is a sigh, like air
escaping. They wait for a moment.

INT: HOTEL ROOM 1
                                                       127
As before, a light can be seen passing outside the
window, through the blinds. It passes from east to west
at great speed. There is a barely perceptible ‘swoosh’ as
it passes. It casts eerie light, circling continuously
around the room.

MS.YOUNG nervously enters the hotel room. One by one, the
four OFFICERS quickly follow.

Immediately after they have entered there is a blinding
flash. Behind it can be heard a faint clap. They recoil,
throwing their arms up to cover their eyes.

On one of the radios an official voice can briefly be
heard through static.
                            95

                          VOICE

                    They’re all dead!

One by one, lowering their hands from their eyes again,
Ms.Young and the four officers move towards the window.
The strobe outside the window flashes continually across
their faces. They look out across the island.

                         OFFICER

                That flash came from the
                    western district.

Ms.Young scans the horizon, thinking.

                        MS.YOUNG

                         No,...
                That was off the island.

They have a strange feeling. They look at their hands.
They feel their faces.

Ms.Young looks out the window more intently, towards the
western district.

                        MS.YOUNG

                     That flash,...

                 came from the airport.

She and the four officers gaze through the blinds as the
strobe flashes past continually from east to west. She
looks out across the city.

INT: HOTEL ROOM 1: MS.YOUNG’S P.O.V.
                                                  127a
Multi-coloured lights stream in wavering bands across the
road network of the island, like a great fluorescent
spider’s web. Daylight rises and falls across the city in
pulsating rhythms. Clouds rush past at great speed.

Ms.Young is perturbed. She raises her finger towards the
strobe.

The officer in white turns to her and asks;
                            96

                         OFFICER

                      What is that?

Ms.Young’s forehead tightens as a look of dark
realisation crosses her face. She whispers,
incredulously;

                        MS.YOUNG

                  It ... it’s the sun.

They stand in silence, hypnotised, as the days on the
island fly past, movement and light on the streets below
a mere blur.

FADE TO BLACK:

INT: HOTEL KITCHEN AREA - NIGHT
                                                       128
GUBO holds PALANKA close. They kiss. The candlelight
casts flickering shadows across the newspaper photograph
on the table behind them. Palanka glances around,
uneasily. There is no sign of Nero.

                         PALANKA

                     Where is Nero?

                          GUBO
                     (dismissively)

                       Never mind.

She turns back to Gubo, but is still uneasy.

They kiss softly for a long time. Then they kiss more
passionately. Gubo runs his fingers through her long,
silky hair. Their blue skin appears dark and shiny under
the candlelight.

He takes her by the hand. They appear in silhouette
against the streetlight through the window as they move
away from the main dining area into the shadows of the
corridor, towards the storerooms.

NERO appears in silhouette at the end of the corridor as
                              97

he re-enters the kitchen.

Nero starts to walk towards the corridor at the other end
of the kitchen when he hears movement from one of the
storerooms.

He stops and listens. He hears a sigh.

NERO walks slowly towards the room and peers around the
edge of the door.

Inside, with threads of light from the street permeating
the darkness, he sees the figures of PALANKA and GUBO
entwined on the table, sweating and moving together,
rhythmically, the contours of their bodies highlighted
under the streetlight from outside.

He is shocked and darts back into the corridor.

what to do. Then he hears a loud cry of pleasure from
Palanka. He winces and turns, hurrying away.

PALANKA stops and looks around, worried again.

                            PALANKA

                     Where is Nero?

Gubo stirs reluctantly. Palanka prods his shoulder, more
urgently.

Gubo rises and moves towards the door, pulling on his
top. He peers around into the corridor.

Palanka rises and, pulling on her clothes also, she
follows him.

                                                         133
GUBO and PALANKA creep silently back into the kitchen.
They find it empty, everything as was.

They scan the weapons on the table, the candlelight
reflecting from the metal onto their faces.

They see the sword is gone.

                            PALANKA

                     We’d better find him.

                                                         134
At the back of the hotel GUBO is mounting his bike.
PALANKA stands by. There is a flash of sparks as he kick
starts the engine. Palanka climbs on behind him and he
takes off round the corner into the street.

EXT: STREET - NIGHT
                                                       135
GUBO and PALANKA dart between cars and manoeuver around
traffic, their hair blowing freely in the wind.

EXT: HILL - NIGHT
                                                       136
GUBO and PALANKA slow at the top of an incline that leads
down towards the suspension bridge over the bay.

Gubo revs the engine and takes off down the hill. Cars
beep their horns as they slip past, the occasional
headlight catching their blue faces. A driver shouts.

                            DRIVER

                          Blue kids!

EXT: HILL - NIGHT
                                                       137
GUBO and PALANKA approach the bottom of the hill and the
                            99

bridge nears.

From an alleyway on the other side of the street, Gubo
catches a flash of light out of the corner of his eye,
like a glint of sun on metal. The sound of traffic
subsides and all goes quiet.

EXT: HILL - NIGHT: GUBO’S P.O.V.
                                                      137a
As he continues to drive Gubo sees a hooded figure run
out of the alleyway. The figure jumps over bins and
obstacles in the path and runs parallel to him. He speeds
up a bit but the figure keeps running and, as it nears,
he sees it is NERO. Nero keeps pace and they near the
bottom of the hill simultaneously. Nero jumps over onto
the bonnet of a parked car as Gubo reaches it.

EXT: HILL - NIGHT
                                                      137b
GUBO looks up and NERO arcs his back, swinging his arms
around. In his hands is the LARGE SWORD. Nero brings the
sword down right across Gubo’s shoulders and cleanly
severs his head. PALANKA falls from the back of the bike,
into the traffic behind.

Gubo’s head bounces across the bonnets of the cars as the
bike and headless body slide to a stop. Cars screech to a
halt and horns beep as the head clatters to the tarmac,
leaving a trail of streaky black bloodstains, like oily
footprints, across the windscreens.

Palanka clambers to her feet and falls back, horrified
and speechless. She is hit by a car from behind and is
propelled forward across the bike.

Nero stands on the bonnet of the parked car, exhilarated,
black blood spattered on his clothes. He raises his sword
in the air triumphantly and it glints in the headlights
of the jammed traffic. Palanka squirms, still stunned.
Then Nero jumps down from the car. Irate and horrified
drivers shout abuse and beep their horns as Nero picks up
Gubo’s head by the hair.

He runs to the edge of the bridge and dropkicks the head
far out into the bay.

INT: BAY: UNDERWATER - NIGHT
                                                       138
Under the water the bay is dark and silent. There is a
hint of reflections of the city at night. There is a
muted splash and a hiss of air bubbles as Gubo’s head
lands and breaks the surface of the water. The head
slowly sinks down into the darkness, it’s hair spiraling
like a long tail behind it.

EXT: BRIDGE - NIGHT
                                                       139
At the edge of the road, NERO drags the bike and headless
body up over the side of the bridge. There is still a
commotion from the rush-hour drivers behind him. The
metal of the bike glints in the headlights as Nero
struggles with it. PALANKA, stunned and covered in black
blood, claws hopelessly at his back. She cries;

                         PALANKA

                       Why Gubo?!
                          Why?!

Nero turns. Car headlights reflect in his eyes. His eyes
are large and green. He flares them and spits back;

                          NERO

              Because he walked with God!!

Palanka’s face drops. Nero heaves the bike up over the
side of the bridge.

INT: BAY: UNDERWATER - NIGHT
                                                         140
All is quiet beneath the bay.

The surface of the water breaks again as the bike and
body crash through. They sink down into the depths. Air
bubbles rush around the bike and rich, underwater
reflections play on the metallic tubing. It slowly
spirals down into the darkness.

The stillness returns for a moment.

Then there is another muffled splash and a hiss of air
                              101

bubbles as PALANKA crashes through the surface of the
water. She sinks slowly to the bottom of the bay, her
long hair spiraling behind her.

She settles softly on Gubo’s bike as it lies on it’s side
on the sea bed. The air bubbles disperse and her hair
settles last of all, around her face.

The stillness returns.

There is the soft rumble of the ocean.

Slowly, a calm expression crosses Palanka’s face. Her
breast rises and falls. She continues to
breathe, as if she is merely sleeping in the water.

FADE TO BLACK:

INT: TWILIGHT ZONE
                                                         141
The METAL DRAGON and YAMA break from their kiss. It is
only moments from when we left them. All is quiet.

The Metal Dragon opens his eyes. He gazes at Yama. He is
about to speak but she places her finger on his lips. In
a sultry tone of voice, she speaks.

                             YAMA

Do you remember a time before
                     we came to this place?

She twirls her finger on his lapel.

                              M.D.
                          (wistfully)

              We were known everywhere that
          civilisation had been. We flourished
                  in the ancient world.

Yama’s expression darkens. She rests her head on his
shoulders.

                              YAMA
                            (sighs)

Long have we waited in vain for
the generation that would be perfect.
                           102

He puts his arms around her.

Then there is movement in the background.

MONKEY and MEI step out of the darkness. The Metal Dragon
and Yama turn to greet them.

                        M.D./YAMA

                       Monkey, ...
                         Mei,...
                We’ve been expecting you.

There is an awkward silence. Monkey and Mei stand warily
at a distance. The Metal Dragon stands forward and Monkey
steps back. The Metal Dragon stops and smiles.

                          M.D.

                 I knew we wouldn’t have
                      to wait long.

He gestures invitingly to the far end of the space.

                          M.D.

                     Welcome to the
                    Gold Restaurant.

There is a large round table, set for dinner, with
platters of sumptuous seafood. There are lobsters and
crabs and seaweed dishes. In the middle of the table is a
charred piece of meat on a spit. In front of it there is
a glazed animal’s head. The table is dressed with
arrangements of shells. In the centre of the table is a
small BLACK CASE.

They approach the table and The Metal Dragon pulls out
their seats. Monkey and Mei sit. They eye Yama and The
Metal Dragon nervously.

Yama reaches across the table to a bowl of steaming
liquid. She eyes Monkey and pours a lintil full of the
liquid into the bowl in front of him. He watches it
swirling into the centre of the bowl.

Monkey and Mei cautiously start to eat. There is the
sound of chopsticks in dishes. Yama studies Mei carefully
while she eats. Yama’s large green eyes are vibrant. Mei
looks down, embarrassed. She turns to look at Monkey. He
is scrutinising The Metal Dragon as he eats. The Metal
                           103

Dragon nonchalantly plays with his food.

MONKEY stops eating and stirs his food again. The Metal
Dragon clears his throat. Monkey reflects for a moment
and then puts down his chopsticks. He sits up and takes a
breath.

                         MONKEY
(with a cautious air of confrontation)

What is the philosophy of crime?

The Metal Dragon stops. He sits back and loosens his
collar. Mei stops eating and listens carefully, glancing
from Monkey to The Metal Dragon.

The Metal Dragon flicks the large screen back on again.

On the screen appears the image of The MAN in the yellow
suit. He is standing in his empty showrooms, crying. His
YELLOW CAR spins slowly on the display table in the
background. His crying can be heard from the screen.

The Metal Dragon draws a thin cigarette from his pocket.
He lights it and, taking a long drag, he blows blue smoke
across the table.

                          M.D.

There are things that are meant to rest.
                          (pause)
But when they move, and they touch...
Pouf! There comes a flash of light,
                   that blinds some,...
but that shows up all the earth below
                 for leagues and leagues.

                         MONKEY

When Dragons fight in the sky, ...
                          (pause)
                ... and their pearls fall
                      to the ground?

                           M.D.
                       (knowingly)

                         Yes,...
                   Pearls of Thunder.
                         (pause)
                           104

               There are many such pearls
                 lying on the seabed of
                        Hai-Wan.

He flicks the screen channel. On the screen appears the
image of Palanka, sleeping in the water, her hair flowing
like seaweed in the ocean currents. Mei gasps and puts
her hand to her mouth.

The Metal Dragon sighs. He leans forward to look Monkey
in the eye.

                          M.D.

                  Your crime is a crime
               against the natural order.
             The philosophy of crime refers
                 simply to your attitude
                       of defiance.
                          (pause)

You see it wasn’t The Heavy Iron.
                          (pause)
It was your own determination that led you
to leap clear of the toils of mortality.
                      (he sits back)

                     You are unique.

               But you are also impetuous,
and now your legion are lost,...

Monkey and Mei shift awkwardly in their seats,
embarrassed by The Metal Dragon’s words.

                          M.D.

I think you need our help.

With an intake of breath, The Metal Dragon flicks the
channel on his screen again. The image of a plane on a
runway appears.

                          M.D.
                   (matter of factly)

                Tomorrow morning you will
                  commit a great crime.

Yama reaches for the case on the table. The case has a
transparent lid. She opens it. Inside, amongst various
                            105

heavy black parts, there are two little flashing green
lights. The Metal Dragon looks knowingly at Mei. Mei goes
red-faced and Yama pushes the case over in front of her.

                            M.D.

                 This device is pre-set.
All you have to do is make sure
that you secret it on the
              Yellow Dragon’s person before
                      he checks in.
His flight time is 8:50 am.
His check-in time is 1 hour before.
This device is set for 9:00 am precisely,
by which time he will be well on his way.

The Metal Dragon takes another drag of his thin
cigarette. Then he reflects and adds;

                            M.D.

The end of the hour of the dragon.

Then he shouts unexpectedly.

                            M.D.

                          Monkey!

Monkey starts.

                            M.D.

You must take care of her.

Monkey sits back and crosses his arms defiantly.

                           MONKEY

What makes you think we’ll do it.

The Metal Dragon narrows his eyes. He scans the food
platters. He takes a large coiled shell from the table
arrangements, holding it up and turning it slowly.

                            M.D.

You know the nature of this island,
                        don’t you?

He takes another long drag of his cigarette and blows
                              106

blue smoke through the shell. The smoke curls out the
other end of the shell in little whisps that disperse in
the air.

                             M.D.

Let me put it another way.
                      (matter of factly)
There are three time zones in
the Bay Of Thunder. From here
we can see into any of them.
Sometimes, if we grow tired of
                watching, we can simply turn
                           them off.
                    But tomorrow morning,
             we will be watching everything.
                 And here, tomorrow is now.

He leans forward across the table and looks Mei in the
eye.

                             M.D.

The moment you walk out that door,
                       it happens.

MONKEY and MEI stand in the elevator as it descends.
There is a flutter in the light and a soft jerk, followed
by a shift in the tone of the elevator compression
suggests that they are moving downward at increasing
speed.

INT: TWILIGHT ZONE
                                                       143
The METAL DRAGON and YAMA stand, looking at one another.
Yama moves closer and they resume their silent slow
dance. She runs her finger across his lip.

                             M.D.

                     I had hopes for them.

                           YAMA
(with a smile in her voice)
                             107

That sweet girl, she charms me.
It is for her that I will come tomorrow.
                           (pause)
It will be over for them both.
And the poor souls, I can think of them ...

She lays her head on his shoulder again. There is a
silent flash of light from the screens behind them and
Yama blinks.

                             YAMA

... I can think of them each
in their full sleep of death.

They continue to circle slowly in the dimness.

reflections of the bay.

They glide to a halt and the DRAGONS all climb out. They

recoil. The kids grab sweets and bars and rip the

They grab newspapers and magazines and throw them in the

MONKEY and MEI cruise smoothly on the motorway.

The BLACK CASE is attached to Mei’s waist. Through its
lid the two green lights flash.

In the distance behind them, two other motorcyclists
appear. They arrive on either side and keep speed with
them. They are the JUDGES OF YAMA.

Monkey and Mei glance to the Judge on their right. He
salutes them. They turn to the other Judge, who nods in
confirmation.

They speed out of the tunnel and the suspension bridge
looms ahead of them. The Judges continue to escort them
as they drive onto the bridge.

For a few moments Monkey and Mei enjoy the freshness of
the sea air.

The western continent looms through the mist on the other
side of the bridge.

Further down the departures hall, is the check-in area.
It is a reasonable distance from the shopping area. The
kids commotion can be heard in the background. People in
the waiting area and check-in queue look around, curious
to see what the disturbance is. Then an expression of
dismay from the top of the queue draws their attention
back to the check-in desk. On the departures display
board, all flights flash ‘DELAYED’
                              113

There is an announcement over the P.A., a sultry female
voice. It echoes around the departures hall.

The commotion of the kids in the background can still be
heard. The security guards can be seen in the background,
pre-occupied with the children.

MONKEY and MEI enter quietly on the bike, in mid-
distance, unnoticed.

The queue of passengers in front of the check-in desk are
preoccupied with the check-in official. No one looks
around to see Monkey and Mei behind them as they glide up
on the bike.

They come to a stop and look around, assessing the
situation. The three DRAGONS are sitting in separate
parts of the waiting area, behind newspapers, the smoke
of hidden cigarettes rising.

Mei slowly steps down from the bike.

INT: DEPARTURES HALL: CHECK-IN - DAY: MEI’S P.O.V.
                                                         165
Through the observation bay window, planes move on the
runway outside.

Through figures in the foreground Mei sees the MAN in the
yellow suit standing with the security officer at the
security check. The SECURITY OFFICER is shaking his head.
Mei shifts her angle. This reveals the WHITE LEASH
extending from the Man in the yellow suit to the animal.
                           114

The animal is out of view below the level of the security
table. The Man in the yellow suit is gesticulating and
the security officer raises his hands, shaking his head
again.

Mei looks back at the check-in official, who is arguing
with another passenger. The official points again at the
departures information board. On the board the flight in
question flashes ‘DELAYED’. Mei slowly backs away.

As she backs away her movement reveals the small black
case on her waist, under her jacket, the two green lights
still flashing. She turns and looks back at Monkey for
re-assurance.

She then turns back towards the check-in and reaches for
the black case on her waist, her hands trembling. She
sees that the MAN in the yellow suit is now at the check-
in desk in front of her and she pauses. He is arguing
with the CHECK-IN OFFICIAL.

Mei looks to the crowd behind the man. Figures slowly
part. The animal at the end of the white leash is
revealed. It stands, staring at Mei.

It is a WHITE MONKEY. It’s face is bald and multi-
coloured like a baboon and it has long silver hair. It is
large and muscular and moves restlessly from foot to
foot, restrained by the white collar around it’s neck. It
is poised, staring at her with large GREEN EYES.

Mei freezes, her hand inches from the BLACK CASE. Silence
falls over everything and she is mesmerised by the
creature’s look. There is a strange, unearthly air to it.
She tentatively steps forward, almost hypnotised by it’s
eyes. She slowly reaches out. The creature watches her
calmly. Her stance in relation to it is reminiscent of
her first meeting with Monkey as an infant in the same
departures hall.

She slowly places her hand on the beast’s head. It
remains calm. She stays still for a moment and it stares
at her. She withdraws and steps back. She is flushed and
trembles.

She sees that the Man in the yellow suit still hasn’t
noticed her. She reaches for the black case. The creature
watches her. She fumbles with the case and the small
green lights stop flashing. She is relieved.

She glances behind her, at Monkey. Monkey moves away
                           115

silently and, as Mei rounds a corner, he approaches
behind her and touches her waist. She turns and is
relieved to see him.

The interior of the plane is brightly lit and HOSTESSES
prepare for take-off. There is a hiss of cabin
compression and air-conditioning.

MONKEY and MEI enter the plane and walk down the aisle.
Mei takes a window seat and Monkey sits beside her. The
white lights make their blue skin vibrant. Friendly
stewardesses offer them refreshments.

Mei is disoriented and breathes quickly. She looks out
the window. Monkey leans over to look out and she turns
to look back at him. They simultaneously move closer to
kiss. Their blue lips meet.

Mei closes her eyes.

INT: DEPARTURES HALL: CHECK-IN - DAY: MONKEY’S P.O.V.
                                                       167
MEI is back in the queue in the departures hall. The
scene is exactly as before.

She looks to the crowd behind The MAN in the yellow suit.
Figures part to reveal the WHITE MONKEY at the end of the
leash, standing, staring at her. It is the same stance
she has seen before. She glances from side to side at the
same passengers she has seen before.

She is powerless to avoid being drawn to the beast again,
and again she steps forward, slowly reaching out. All is
deathly silent. Everything seems unreal, movement seeming
strangely smooth and fluid, like slow motion. Mei is
captivated once again by the creature’s large green eyes.

Her hand finally rests on the beast’s head.

This time the White Monkey suddenly screams like a
banshee and shatters the silence. The noise is deafening
in Monkey’s head as he observes.

Mei pulls away quickly but the beast bucks, whining
wildly.
                             116

The Man in the yellow suit spins around. Mei freezes. The
beast continues to buck and snarl at her. Everything is
still silent, except for the snarling of the animal. Mei
slowly turns to look for Monkey and she sees what has
caught the attention of the Man in the yellow suit.

The children are all running towards the check-in,
followed by security. The DRAGONS are following them,
approaching from the waiting area. As the children near
the check-in they come to a stop one by one, until they
are all standing around, enclosing the situation. They
are frozen with fear. Some of them point, most are
speechless. All is still silent, but their mouths can be
seen moving as they shout;

                           CHILDREN

                         The beast!!

Mei turns back.

The White Monkey lunges forward. It goes straight for
Mei’s throat, wrapping its jaws around her neck, as she
falls to the ground. The black case falls and rolls away
from her, out of reach. The beast pins her down,
growling. It breaks the skin on her neck and clenches its
teeth.

In the foreground, the black case continues to flash its
green lights. It is just out of Mei’s reach. The White
Monkey maintains its grip. Black blood runs from beneath
Mei, across the cool smooth floor of the departures hall.

The timer on the black case clicks: 9:00 AM

There is a distant clap.

WHITENESS:
                                                       168
Stillness and silence.

Ghostly forms pass, like dust being blown away. Then
there is nothing.

There is a barely perceptible hum, like the rumble of the
ocean at the bottom of the bay.
                           117

Movement can be seen through white. Two barely
perceptible figures appear, circling in the whiteness.
Two voices echo. They are the voices of YAMA and The
METAL DRAGON.

                          YAMA

Do you remember a time before
                  we came to this place?

                           M.D.
                       (wistfully)

              We were known everywhere that
          civilisation had been. We flourished
                  in the ancient world.

                           YAMA
(with a smile in her voice)

That sweet girl, she charms me.
                         (pause)

It is for her that I will come
                        tomorrow.

The whiteness intensifies and they are burned out,
backlit into nothing.

                                                       169
Fire and wind light up the whole cityscape of the bay of
thunder.

HELICOPTERS hover over the ruins of the departures area
of the airport. Carpets of smoke roll across the rubble
as the fire disperses.

Slowly, the smoke clears and the desolate sight draws
gasps from the PILOTS above.

Monkey, Mei, the children, Thunderpearl and The Beast are
gone. But in their wake, strewn around the remains of the
hall, are the bodies of all the PEOPLE in the check-in
queue and in the waiting area, including the 3 DRAGONS
and The YELLOW DRAGON ( The Man In The Yellow Suit ).

                              118

                   They’re all dead !

Smoke settles and starts to clear.

Slowly the bodies rise. One by one, they look around,
stunned.

The Yellow Dragon rises and, smoke continuing to rise in
spirals from around him, his face becomes apparent. His
skin is blue, a pale smooth blue, like Monkey’s and The
Metal Dragon’s.

He looks around and catches sight of the other dragons.
They too are blue. They look at each other, puzzled, then
shocked. The Yellow Dragon looks down at his hands and
then brings them slowly to his face to feel his skin.

Other people stir and rise.

Anybody that was caught by the blast is now immortal. The
pilots are speechless.

The dragons look around and blue lights flash across
their faces as police and ambulances arrive in the
background.

A news report echoes across the airwaves.

                       NEWS REPORT
                         ( V.O.)

               This morning’s events have
left many baffled. The extensive damage to
the west wing of the Airport on the mainland
should have left many casualties, if not
                       fatalities.

           But, remarkably no-one was injured.

             The survivors have been detained
for analysis as they appear to suffer
                   from a condition that
               causes the body to perfectly
                           119

            replicate the conditions of death.
Yet they are evidently alive and appear
to have their full faculties about them.
            But no actual, clinical, medically
acceptable signs of life can be found.

Officials this morning, speaking in lieu
of The Chief Of Police, Ms.Young,
who went missing late last night, said,
“... these people have committed no recognisable
crime. They should be allowed to continue
with their daily lives, but should be
                 monitored very carefully.”

The last sighting of The Blue Rider
and his accomplice was reported in the

              the blast early this morning.

           They are now officially ‘missing’.

enters the tunnel on the other side of the western

On the shore of the island, near the bridge, light from
the airport permeates the water to the seabed.

Far below, PALANKA lies draped over Gubo’s bike, her hair
flowing like seaweed in the ocean currents. Her breast
continues to rise and fall.

The light from above flickers across her body. She stirs
and wakes.

She slowly rises and, air bubbles swirling around her,
she swims upwards. Her head breaks the surface of the
water and she gasps.

She slowly climbs up onto rocks.

As she rises and her waist appears out of the water,
something can be seen clutched in her hand. It looks like
                             120

a tuft of hair. Then more of the object emerges and it
becomes apparent that she is carrying GUBO’S HEAD,
clutching it by the hair, her knuckles white, ribbons of
flesh hanging from it’s neck.

There is a large tunnel entrance nearby and she walks
across more rocks towards it.

She disappears into the tunnel.

Inside the tunnel, silhouetted against the bright bay
outside, PALANKA kneels and holds GUBO’S HEAD in her lap.
She gazes into his glassy, open eyes. She sighs.

Then she lifts his head up and presses his forehead
against her own. There is a long silence.

                            PALANKA
                    ( her voice breaking )

                        ( pause )

               Somehow you’re still alive.

Her weeping can be heard echoing softly around the
tunnel.

                           PALANKA
                       ( whispering )

I know that somehow you can see me,

Gubo’s head stares back blankly.

Palanka slowly bows.

The town square is littered with little BODY PARTS, the
severed limbs, torsos and heads of toddlers and
teenagers. The bright blue of their skin jars with the

clothing.

Powerful jets of water hose down the body parts and, with
a roar, foam runs under them and across the square.
TECHNICIANS and OFFICIALS in white coats and masks mill
around at a distance, behind lines of yellow tape.

There is more flashing of waiting vehicles.

A deathly silence and solemnity hangs in the air.

                                                       174
At the entrance to the subway, on the square where
Palanka first appeared, the night before, PALANKA appears
once more.

She emerges slowly, up steps, from the darkness of the
subway entrance.

She is struggling to carry Gubo’s entire BODY, his HEAD
now balanced on his chest. She is soaked through, seaweed
hanging from her shoulders.

POLICE immediately dart around and circle in, enclosing
her, but still keeping a distance, warily.

                         OFFICER
                     ( into radio )

                   We have one alive !
                 Subway Entrance Zero !

Palanka drops to her knees and lays Gubo’s body in front
of her. His head rolls and clunks on the ground like a
coconut.

                         PALANKA

                        Help me.

The police take Palanka aside and a MEDIC rushes forward.
She pulls on white gloves and indicates to the police to
stay back.

She runs one of the little flashing DEVICES the length of
Palanka’s body and acknowledges no signs of life. Then
she turns to Gubo and her face drops as she sighs and
runs the device in a cursory manner across his face and
chest. She stands.

Palanka struggles but the police hold her back. She cries
out;

                         PALANKA

                           No!
                    He can’t be dead!

She looks imploringly at the medic.
                           123

                         PALANKA

                   Look at him again!

The medic is moved by Palanka’s plea and hesitantly
kneels again, looking at the motionless body and head.

She slowly leans closer and gazes into Gubo’s open eyes.

There is a tense silence for a few beats.

Then Palanka whispers, with a childlike simplicity;

                         PALANKA

                          See ?

The medic looks closer still.

Then a darkness crosses her countenance and she shivers
as she sees something in his eyes. She moves back and
tears well up as she places her hand over her mouth. Her
voice breaks;

                          MEDIC

                     Mother of God !
                        ( pause )

… This child is not dead !

Palanka squirms and breaks free from the police, rushing
forward. Her tears flow again but now a nervous laugh
enters her voice.

                         PALANKA

                   None of them are !!

EXT: THE VALLEY OF ELECTRICTY – DAY
                                                       175
Great plumes of blue smoke and ash rise and billow into
the air as white coated TECHNICIANS shovel BODY PARTS
onto a huge burning pyre. Little flecks of silver sparkle
in the morning light as the blue cloud grows and slowly
spreads through the streets, disrupting traffic.

An OFFICIAL looks up, ash settling on the visor of his
WHITE HELMET.
                             124

A report comes over his radio.

                            REPORT
                        ( panicking )

                     They’re not dead !
                         ( repeat )

                     They’re not dead !

EXT: SUBWAY ENTRANCE ZERO – DAY
                                                       176
PALANKA, tears in her eyes, dried salt on her hair and
clothes, gazes into the sky above the VALLEY OF
ELECTRICITY as the blue cloud of ash progresses through
the streets, curling around buildings and obscuring
office windows. It grows, out of control, as if some
unknown chemistry is taking place within.

Another report echoes as sirens rise in the background.

                           REPORT

                      They’re not dead!

Palanka closes her eyes and her expression slowly
softens. She whispers under her breath;

                           PALANKA
( with a smile in her voice )

                            Gubo.

She plants a kiss on his forehead.

EXTREME C.U.: PALANKA’s eyelids.

                           PALANKA

                     They feel no pain.

Silvery blue ash settles on her eyelids, her pupils
fluttering beneath them.

She whispers;

                           PALANKA
                             125

                       our companions,…
                           ( pause )

                     … are wind and dust.

A breeze picks up.

Surrounded by the silvery blue ash and dust of their
friends, Palanka holds Gubo’s head high and turns his
face to her own.

                           PALANKA

                     The end of the earth
                          is my home.

Their lips meet.

The sirens and the atmospheric sound subside and the
sound of the sea slowly re-emerges as the blue cloud
fills the view

EXT: BAY - DAY
                                                  177
Far out across the bay, ash drifts and settles on the
water surface.

Beneath the bay, through dappled morning light, silver
specks slowly sink.

There is only stillness, and the rumble of the ocean.

EXTREME C.U.:

Through blue, the lid of an eye opens and long lashes
undulate in silent ocean currents. Dark hair flows in
washing, boundless space. For a brief moment a familiar
profile becomes discernible, then fades.

The eyes close – as MEI turns,

forever the panther, even in repose.

FADE TO BLACK:

                             END
