Title of Action Number Sense Basics
 Research Project

 Name of Teacher Cheryl Wilson
 Researcher

Name of School Minneola Elementary Grade Level 3rd

    1. Classroom Problem: The problem is that this group of students did not have a concrete
concept of number sense. Repetitive Mathematic drill strategies have no meaning and real
        world application to them.
    2. Research Process: To achieve this goal, I enrolled in a professional development course
Thinking Mathematics I. Using the Ten Principles of Thinking Mathematics, I was able to
build a strong number sense foundation for my students.
Collection and Analysis: At the beginning of the year, the results of the Edusoft assessment
indicated 42.35%, of my students were below grade level. The results of the STAR Math
assessment indicated 52% of my class was below grade level. The results of the Harcourt Math
inventory assessment indicated that 60% of my students were below grade level.
At the mid year Edusoft assesment, the group average was on grade level with only 40%
 below grade level.
The end of the year STAR Mathematics assessment resulted in 56% students on grade level with
only 44% below grade level. The end of the year Harcourt Mathematics post assessment
determined that only 21% of the students were below grade level, and 79% were on grade level
 or above.

    3. Action: My action is to differentiate my instruction to establish a strong number sense by
using mental math skills, manipulatives and real world models. I will use these activities
and lesson’s in whole group, small group, and centers.
    4. Professional Reflection: To strengthen my student’s mental mathematical abilities I
utilized hundred grid charts in whole group instruction. The activity was used to help
students recognize patterns in our number system. I also gave them strategies of “Making
a Ten” in order for large numbers to become less overwhelming. In small group, I played
games like “Number Land” to increase place value awareness. Finally, in centers I gave

math puzzle challenges such as “Bits and Pieces” of the hundreds grids.
Next year I will have a center all year round with the topic of number sense to strengthen
their abilities all year. I will also use these activities I learned this year for many years to
        come.
