Nov. 1-29: Middleton Place presents Plantation Days. Craftworkers demonstrate the skills
practiced by slaves as they prepared the antebellum plantation for harvest time. A different aspect of
18th and 19th-century plantation life will be explored: Domestic Skills, African American Traditional
Arts, Low Country Foodways and the Plantation Natural Environment. Regular admission. Middleton

Nov. 5: The Charleston Museum presents Kid Tours. Explore our latest Kidstory exhibit featuring
children's clothing, toys, and native crafts of Mexico. Kid Tours is a series designed to highlight
artifacts from our collection that have fascinated children for years. Kid Tours meet the first Wed. of

Nov. 7-21: Lunchtime Tour and Lecture Series. Local scholars and cultural critics will explore
current exhibitions from varying perspectives. On Nov. 7, Faith Davis Ruffins of the Smithsonian
Institute will discuss the exhibition Grass Roots: African Origins of an American Art. On Nov. 21,
Exhibition Co-Curator Dale Rosengarten of the College of Charleston will discuss the exhibition Grass

Nov. 23-Jan. 2: Christmases of Yesterday. Exhibits at the Nathaniel Russell House will
portray Christmas in 1808, the year the Federal-era mansion was completed. Natural foliage will
adorn the house and a grand dining table will be laden with treats as if awaiting the arrival of the
Russell’s holiday guests. A Victorian Christmas in the South will captivate visitors to the Aiken-
Rhett House. Decorations will hearken back to the time of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and
the first use of “Christmas trees.” Exhibits in the outbuildings, where slaves both lived and worked,
will emphasize their unique traditions. Aiken-Rhett House, 48 Elizabeth St. & The Nathaniel Russell

Ongoing: Historic Charleston Foundation offers tours of the historic Aiken-Rhett House. The
expansive Aiken-Rhett House (c. 1818) stands as the city’s most intact urban villa. A conservation
approach has been adopted for this important site, which has survived virtually unaltered since 1858.
Many objects can still be found in the rooms for which they were purchased. 48 Elizabeth St. Mon.-

Ongoing: Boone Hall Plantation presents live presentations that cannot be found on any other
plantations in the area and are part of what helps make Boone Hall unique. However, these shows

Ongoing: Cabbage Row. The section of Church St. used as the inspiration for "Catfish Row" in the
Dubose Heyward story, "Porgy." This story was the basis for Gershwin's opera "Porgy and Bess,"
which is a fictionalized glimpse of black life during the 1920's. The character "Porgy" was based on an

Ongoing: Cannons boom. Muskets bark. Interpretive rangers in 17th century dress tend heirloom
crops. They’re all part of the “new” Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site. Here a group of
English settlers landed in 1670 and established what would become the birthplace of the Carolinas
colony, the plantation system of the American South, and one of the continent’s first major port
cities. And here the story is still told. Opened in 1970 as Charles Towne Landing State Park, the
peaceful park on a marshy point off the Ashley River was rebuilt in 2006 with a sharpened focus on
the site’s remarkable past. Begin with the 12-room, interactive museum in the Visitors Center that
includes a “digital dig”. Then walk the self-guided history trail, using the MP3 players that add an
audio tour to the experience. Admire the Adventure, a full-size replica sailing ship built onsite, and
the authentic experimental crop garden. Talk to archaeologists at work. And leave time for the
Animal Forest natural habitat zoo and 80 acres of gardens that includes an elegant live oak alle’ and

Ongoing: The Charleston Museum. America’s first museum showcases cultural and natural history
of South Carolina’s coastal region. Enjoy the rich variety of exhibited objects ranging from ancient

Ongoing: Drayton Hall is a National Historic Landmark and a property of the National Trust for
Historic preservation. Built in 1738, it is the oldest and finest colonial plantation house in Charleston.
It is the only plantation that survived the Civil War intact. It is noted for its hand-carved woodwork
and plasterwork. After seven generations, the Revolutionary and Civil wars, and numerous
hurricanes and earthquakes, the main house remains in nearly original condition. 3380 Ashley River

depth info about the museum’s collection and specific objects by using their personal cell phones.
