Welcome Back
Happy New Year to everyone. We start a new year with a number of new pupils and families in
the school. Welcome to everyone and we hope you will enjoy your time at Burnfoot and work
hard and learn well.

Farmhouse Breakfast
P5 had a special treat on Thursday 25th January where they were treated to a farmhouse
breakfast by Royal Highland Education Trust ( RHET). Members of the trust with kitchen
staff and Mrs Davis a parent helper supported by two Border Reiver rugby players prepared
and served cereal and milk, fruit and a drink and a bacon or sausage roll to all the children in
the two P5 classes. Everyone enjoyed their breakfast. The event is supported by local farmer
Mr McTaggart from Ormiston Farm and uses local produce. It is hope in May the classes will
make a visit to Mr McTaggart’s farm.

Drama workshops
P3, P3/4 and P4 were involved in drama workshops on Friday 19th January. The children had a
great time and experienced a range of different drama activities given by The Helen
O’Grady Drama Academy. Although an Edinburgh organisation The Academy runs classes in
Hawick on the Friday any parents interested in their children attending should phone 0131
332 2766

Nursery Enrolment
Nursery enrolment week will Monday 19th February to Friday 23rd February. Gail Campbell in
the community office will be on hand with enrolment forms for three year old and four year
old nursery spaces. Please ensure that any first time parents you know are alerted to this and
come along to enrol their children. Please bring the child’s birth certificate or passport with
you to enrol.

Health and Safety
Under the Health and Safety guidelines - Safe Practices in Physical Education and Sport,
earrings and any other jewellery should not be worn during PE lessons, this includes stud
earrings. Could all children not have jewellery on, on PE days or be prepared to take it off.
When classes have been going swimming they have been bringing spray deodorants and
hairsprays to school. Sprays can be dangerous when sprayed either intentionally or
accidentally in the face, it is therefore wise to avoid their use. We would ask children not to
bring these into school, a roll on deodorant and hair gel is acceptable.

Fairplay
Congratulations to Lesley Hogg and Karen Readhead of Fairplay for attaining their SVQ 3 in
Play Work from Border College.
Fairplay will be open from 9am – 4pm on Tuesday 13th February ( in- service day)
Robert Burns
This Friday 26th January our assembly was on the poet Robert Burns. P1-4 learned five facts
about Robert Burns and what a Burns Supper was. P3/4 had their own mini burns supper in
the class on Thursday afternoon.
Primary 7 have been learning about Robert Burns in class and shared their learning with
others at the P5 – P7 assembly on Friday.

Assembly
The next whole school assembly is on Friday 2nd February called The Day of Change and is for
the Charity UNICEF. Children and adults are asked to come along on the day dressed in
rainbow colours or multi coloured clothes. We would ask all children and adults to bring along
50p on the day to go towards the charity.

Eco schools
The Eco School committee have been hard at work recycling the paper and plastic waste in
the school. We have managed to reduce the amount of rubbish the school sends to landfill
sites considerably over the last few months and we are about to apply for a Bronze Eco
Schools award.

Congratulations
Congratulations to Shirley Keegan, Lauraine Smith and Sharon Halfpenny, three local parents
who successfully completed The Prepare to Care course at Borders College. They successfully
completed an SQA module at Intermediate Level 2 and have guaranteed progression to a
work placement with Care Home employers within the local community of Hawick.
