For the Record
Meeting Minutes: 3/13/08 – Shirley Steele
President Bob Steele started the meeting at 7:04 stating that this was the 26th meeting. Nancy Beasley gave the Treasurer’s report.
Bob had donated the proceeds from the ground school class of $500 to the scholarship fund. Students paid their fees directly to the
EAA Chapter. Nancy had set up a savings account for the fund and it has a balance of $1826. Cash on hand is $905.82.

No work has been started on the scholarship yet but Bob has emailed Brad Nester to see if he will be responsible for it again this
year. The committee will meet at a later date. It consists of Nancy Beasley, Emily Gile, Brad Nester, and Bob. Janet will ask
Melvin at Micrometrics if he wants to help sponsor another recipient this year for the scholarship. [Editor’s note: actually, there
has been quite a bit of work done by now as this newsletter goes to press.]

There was no Board meeting in March. Bob stated that the bylaws had been approved by EAA headquarters. The chapter now has
a signed conflict of interest policy which was needed for the 501C3 application. Ina is the chairperson for this. She will put the
final pkg. together, which must be submitted by the 17th of April. Frank Plitcha in Galax will review it.

Air Show status: Scott said that he and Bob were the committee. Lynn Layher has resigned as airport manager and will not pursue
any further association with the airport.

There will be a Young Eagle’s Rally on April 19 with a rain date of April 26. Because of graduation being held in May discussion
was had on the May proposed date for a rally at Micrometrics. Graduation for Carroll Co. is May 17 and Patrick May 24. Shirley
made a motion to cancel the one for May and Scott seconded it. It was unanimously approved. Janet will ask Melvin about
September. EAA will do the food concession for the YE Rally and Joy Bryant has consented to take care of that. Mimi Thomas
said she would help if available.

Committees:
Fundraising: Nancy Beasley Refreshments: Ina Jacobs Young Eagles Coordinator: Janet Tate
Air Show: Scott Thomas Programs: Marcus Ogle Scholarship; Membership: Brad Nester

Aqua Jet X is here in four boxes. Mark and Bob will meet on Tuesday to begin working with that. Scott announced that he had
helped do some repair work on the old hangar and that they would not have to move from it.

Bob told the group that some long range planning should be made for thinking about getting a building for the chapter and doing
things to enhance the airport, like a picnic area. The airport has hangars in long range plans. Marcus had suggested the hilltop for a
picnic area. It has a 360 degree view and is a safe place from which to watch activities. Anyone interested in long range planning
should send an e-mail to Bob.

Mark needs two plastic tables to replace the ones he gave us Bill moved to give $200 to Mark to buy the tables. Janet seconded
the motion and it was approved. Discussion was had about a Hardware Co. pancake breakfast. Nancy will investigate the
possibility. Scott stated that Derrick Davis is willing to advertise our events on the radio. The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 PM.
Delicious refreshments prepared by Joy Bryant were enjoyed by all.

A student became lost during a solo cross-country flight. While attempting
to locate the aircraft on radar, ATC asked, "What was your last known
position?" Student: "When I was number one for takeoff."

One day the pilot of a Cherokee 180 was told by the tower to hold short of
the active runway while a DC-8 landed. The DC-8 landed, rolled out, turned
around, and taxied back past the Cherokee. Some quick-witted comedian in
the DC-8 crew got on the radio and said, "What a cute little plane. Did you
make it all by yourself?" The Cherokee pilot, not about to let the insult go
by, came back with a real zinger: "I made it out of DC-8 parts. Another
landing like yours and I'll have enough parts for another one."

Tower: "Delta 351, you have traffic at 10 o'clock, 6 miles!"
Delta 351: "Give us another hint -- we have digital watches!"

View from the Hill
By Sharyl Walker (based on good points made by Marcus Ogle and Bob Steele)
First in an Occasional Series

Imagine this: it’s a fine spring day and you’re wondering who’s breaking out
of the coop to stretch their wings at HLX. You pack a few sandwiches, load
up the grandkids, and head up Hangar Road. You park the car and then stroll
up a gentle incline lined with daffodils and shrubbery planted by the local
garden club and the Ruritans.

As you approach the top, you hear Bill Bryant fire up helicopter #38. The
kids shout with glee, perfectly safe and out of harm’s way, before racing to
the “Control Tower” jungle gym. Johnny climbs to the top to advise Bob in
Cessna 4-3-Uniform doing touch and go’s on 1-9. Susie slides down the
loopiest, goofiest slide ever into a sand box at the base of a trail that leads her safely back up to you. You point out an X-Air
on the ramp and tell Susie that ol’ lady Walker, now about 92, is finally ready to fly that thing.

Margaret waves to Marcus fueling up his J3 Cub, while Danny impresses
you with his knowledge of Mr. Scott’s Bellanca. As you spread out the
lunch on the picnic table, Mark makes a perfect landing in his Kitfox.
Dennis is up in his gyro. Tom is polishing up his Piper as you polish off
the chicken salad. Nancy is on downwind in her Cherokee as you bring
out the chocolate cupcakes. Jake and Ina do run-ups in their biplane as
Rick takes off in his RV. Meanwhile, Janet and Shirley are pulling out
the powered parachute. You think about the time your son’s scout troop
camped up here and spent the weekend earning their Aviation badge, and
how your daughter took her first flight as a Young Eagle when she was 8
years old in Jody’s Bonanza. She and Emily Gile’s granddaughter have
a very successful space tourism business now.

And then there was the time when you needed those parts from Cincinnati by 7 AM to finish the prototype you were
showcasing in Raleigh that same day at 1 PM, and how that first deal had led to your very rewarding career. And as Louis’
A36 takes off, you remember when your neighbor’s grandson took an Angel Flight to receive life-saving heart surgery.

You glance in the local paper you brought along to read a feature article about Col. L. Nester’s CAP accomplishments.
Suddenly you hear something that sounds like thunder, but there are no clouds in the sky – ahh, that’s just Josh taking his
Dad for a spin around the continent.

The kids do another dozen rounds on the swings, the space shuttle, and
the Aqua Jet. It’s been a good day and everyone is contentedly tired as
you pack up. As the sun gets low, you know you’ll be back soon -- that
evening, in fact -- for the Annual HLX Hangar Dance! Remember last
year -- the twinkling lights, the planes and owners decked out like it was
1944, with “String of Pearls” starting up just as you and your sweetheart
walked in?

EAA Chapter Plans 2nd Annual Aviation Camp Scholarship
   By Brad Nester

One of the chief purposes of the Twin County Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 1426 is to foster the love
of aviation in young people. We do this by treating children (8-17) to flights at our Young Eagles rallies, helping
plan local air shows, speaking in local schools during career days, and working with the local airport to find ways
to involve the community, particularly children.

For the second year in a row, we are planning an aviation camp scholarship. This scholarship is being awarded as
part of our Emily Gile Scholarship Program. Emily Gile was a World War II Woman’s Air Service Pilot (WASP)
and continues to have a keen interest in making aviation available to children. As a result, a young boy or girl
(ages 12-17) will experience a week long aviation camp during the summer of 2008. This week would be a
wonderful experience for any child who has a significant interest in any aspect of aviation. Last year the Chapter
was able to send two students to camp.

The scholarship will be awarded to attend the Aviation Challenge camp in Huntsville, Alabama. The Chapter is
committed to working with the family of the successful applicant to address any financial or travel problems to
enable the applicant to attend the camp. You can learn more about the aviation camp at
   http://www.spacecamp.com (look under Aviation Challenge).

If you are interested in aviation and are between the ages of 12-17, then you are invited to submit an application to
receive a scholarship to attend camp. Please write Dr. Bradley S. Nester, 393 Archa St., Hillsville, VA 24343, or
e-mail rnester@va.net, or call 276 728 0694 and ask for an EAA Scholarship Application Packet. Applications
must be postmarked April 30, 2008 or earlier.
