							                               Research Fellowships
This guide is aimed at Loughborough University staff interested in applying for research
funding. Detailed guidance of such funding is available from staff in the Research Office,
who are based in Rutland Hall room RH1.12

UK-based funding bodies – Arif Syed (Tel x 8491, email: a.syed@lboro.ac.uk)
                         Jeanette Guida (Tel. x 2455, email: j.e.guida@lboro.ac.uk)

EU and overseas funders – Ray Kent (Tel x 2456, email r.w.kent@lboro.ac.uk)

                                            Tips for Applying
Finding the right funder
 There are many learned societies, charities and industrial organisations in the UK and abroad
        offering fellowship funding
 Sign up for email alerts from funding bodies of particular interest to you. You can also use
databases such as ‘Community of Science’, Research Fortnight and www.rdinfo.org.uk (for
        medicine and related research)
 Ensure that you are eligible to apply
 Think about your project, it needs to be novel and exciting to you and the funding body – discuss
        this with senior colleagues
 Talk to other Fellows who have had success
 Ensure you have the support of your Department and the University before applying

Writing your proposal
 Allow plenty of time for preparation, you will need to prepare costings, get signatures and approvals
and draft the proposal a number of times
 Study the funding source, target your proposal to the call and strategies. Ensure the funder is
compatible with the mission or objectives of your Department or Faculty
 Read the rules and guidance notes, avoid basic mistakes. Check the funding level.
 Try to see referees forms and guidelines, answer the questions they will be asked so the referee
        can give positive answers
 Discuss the application with peer groups., colleagues and the Research Office who will be able to
        advise you
 Contact the people you intend to nominate as referees, let them know your plans
 Contact the funder with any questions, it is good to open the lines of communication early and it will
save time in the long run. They will be able to give detailed, scheme specific advice - and they
        want to help.
 Get the first paragraph right, no jargon, not too heavy. It needs to get the attention of the reader

                                                     -6-
Aim: Economics is of increasing importance in health care management to inform and improve decision
making on, for example, the clinical and cost effectiveness of new and existing interventions. Demand is
high for individuals who can conduct economic evaluations and are able to critically appraise such
evaluations but there is an acknowledged lack of capacity in this field. A joint working group was
established to advise the funders on potential strategies for building capacity. Following these discussions,
the funders are delighted to announce a raft of new career development opportunities for outstanding
individuals who wish to pursue research careers in economics of health.
Requirements: At the time of application candidates must either have a PhD/DPhil or expect to do so by
the time of take-up of the award, and must not have more than three years (full-time equivalent) post-
doctoral experience. Applicants should hold a PhD or DPhil in a relevant area (for example economics) but
consideration will be given to those who combine training in economics with research in related areas (for
example statistics, epidemiology). Consideration will also be given to applicants that may have completed a
PhD in some other area but have subsequently completed, or are undertaking, formal training in health
economics for example a masters degree in health economics. Individuals who have completed their
doctorate more than 36 months prior to the beginning of the award will not be eligible, unless they had
experienced an interruption of their career for family, health or other personal reasons. Consideration will
be given to applicants who are returning to science following a career break. There are no age limits for any
of our schemes and all fellowships may be held part-time to fit in with domestic responsibilities. There are
no residence eligibility restrictions for these fellowships.
Value: The fellowship provides personal salary, consumable expenses, travel and other costs
appropriate for the research work and training under Full Economic Costs. It is expected that this level
of fellowship will not normally require support for additional research staff.
Deadline: 4pm 10th October 2008, Short listing: January/February 2009, Interviews: February/March 2009,
Take up dates: April – September 2009

will not be eligible, unless the interruption of their career was for family, health or other personal reasons, in
such cases details about the interruption must be provided with the application.
Candidates re-entering academia after a career break must not have more than 2 years (full-time
equivalent) related post-doctoral experience or expect to have by the time they commence the award.
There are no residence eligibility restrictions for these fellowships.
Value: The Fellowship provides personal salary, research costs together with consumable expenses, travel
costs appropriate for the research work under Full Economic Costs.

MRC Methodology Research Fellowship (SSH, SCI)
http://www.mrc.ac.uk/Careers/Fellowships/AvailableFelllowships/MethodologyResearch/index.htm

Duration: Any period up to four years
Number of Awards: Not stated
Aim: The MRC methodology research fellowship is a post-doctoral award aimed at providing a period of
specialist training in health research methodology. The scheme is aimed at researchers with a grounding
in health research, not necessarily in a methodological discipline, who wish to undertake a period of
specialist training in the development and investigation of innovative research methods. This award should
enable researchers to move from post-doctoral scientist to an independent researcher in their chosen
research field. The training environment will be a key factor in the assessment of the application (in addition
to the research proposal and the applicant) and applications will need to demonstrate the environment’s
suitability for enabling innovative methods development research. Any request for more formal training
courses in methods development (for example MScs etc) will need to justify how they will enable innovative
methods research. The award also offers the opportunity to enhance the research training through
placement in an overseas research centre, a second research centre or in UK industry. The scheme is
open to applicants who wish to pursue methods development research training in any area of health
research ranging from basic experimental and observational science, through to clinical trials and applied
public health research. Proposals are likely to involve developing and applying innovative methodologies in
one or more of the following disciplines: health economics; biostatistics, bioinformatics; modeling, decision
sciences, epidemiology; clinical trials; behavioural sciences; health psychology, qualitative methodologies
and mixed methods, medical sociology and medical geography.

graduate work will also be considered. Other relevant disciplines include those that support clinical
research directly, as well as nurses, midwives and members of the allied health professions. Medical or
dental graduates should be post-registration up to and including specialist registrar and preferably have
worked in a department carrying out clinical research. All applicants will be expected to demonstrate
progression towards an independent career, for example from publications arising from doctoral and post-
doctoral research. Applications from existing MRC research fellows and post-doctoral researchers returning
from overseas are particularly welcome. As with all MRC fellowships, these awards are not available to
individuals who hold a permanent academic position at the time of application. If you hold a permanent
position, you may apply for funding under one of the MRC grant schemes. Fellows may be based at UK
universities, medical or dental schools, hospitals, general practices, research council institutes and units,
charity-funded research centres, or other approved academic institutions. As part of the MRC’s equal
opportunities policy, consideration will be given to applicants who are returning to science following a
career break. There are no age limits for any of our schemes and all fellowships may be part-time to fit with
domestic responsibilities. There are no residence eligibility restrictions for this fellowship.
Value: The fellowship provides the fellow’s competitive salary, research training costs (in and/or outside
the UK), research consumables expenses, travel costs and capital equipment appropriate for the research
project, and all other relevant costs under Full Economic Costs (FEC). The methodology research
fellowship is primarily intended to support the training and development of the fellow. Where research staff
is required then these should be requested and clearly justified; however, this level of support would be
    considered exceptional.
The fellowship also provides the opportunity to spend time in an overseas research centre, a second UK
research centre or UK industrial centre in year two or three of the award. The aim of this training
component is to provide a concentrated period of training, which could not be achieved as effectively within
    the academic host institution.

MRC Population Health Scientist Fellowship (SSH, SCI)
    http://www.mrc.ac.uk/Careers/Fellowships/AvailableFelllowships/PopulationHealthFellow/index.htm

Duration: Any period up to 4 years
    Number of Awards: Not stated
Aim: Disciplines within population health sciences relevant to this scheme include, but are not limited to:

 Social, clinical, life course and genetic epidemiology
 Biostatistics
 Health demography
 Medical sociology
 Health psychology
 Medical anthropology
 Human geography
 Health economics

This scheme is open to early career researchers seeking to acquire formal multidisciplinary research
training in a range of the above disciplines (or related disciplines). The prospective fellow’s research project
and training environment must enable them to acquire complementary skills and expertise in large-scale
quantitative and qualitative study design, data collection and analysis, in order to become independent
    research scientists.
Requirements: Science graduate applicants should hold a PhD or DPhil in a relevant discipline or expect
to do so by the time they take up the award. Applicants who hold a research-oriented Masters degree and
have carried out appropriate postgraduate work for three years or more will also be considered. Medical or
dental graduates should be post-registration up to and including specialist registrar grade or be at the
equivalent level in general practice or dentistry. More experienced specialist registrar grade applicants will
preferably have worked for a period in a department carrying out clinical research. Nurses, midwives and
members of the allied health professions must have completed their professional training and hold a
Masters degree, or equivalent postgraduate research-oriented qualification. Applicants who do not hold a
PhD/DPhil, MD or Masters Degree in a relevant discipline are expected to study for such a qualification
within their programme of research training.

                                                         -9-
There are no residential requirements for post-doctoral applicants, although there are some requirements
for pre-doctoral applicants. Please refer to the link under 'Guidance for applicants'. If you are invited to
interview you will be expected to demonstrate a commitment to the UK research effort in the area of
Population Health Sciences beyond the period of the award. Fellows may be based at UK universities,
medical or dental schools, research council institutes and units, charity-funded research centres, or other
approved academic institutions.
As part of the MRC’s equal opportunities policy, consideration will be given to applicants who are returning
to science following a career break. There are no age limits for any of our schemes and all Fellowships may
be held part-time to fit in with domestic responsibilities.
Value: At the postdoctoral level, the award provides the fellow’s competitive salary, research training costs
(in and/or outside the UK), research consumables expenses, travel costs and capital equipment
appropriate for the research project, and all other relevant costs under Full Economic Costs (FEC). The
population health scientist fellowship is primarily intended to support the training and development of the
fellow. Where research staff is required then these should be requested and clearly justified; however, this
level of support would be considered exceptional.
Full economic costs do not apply to pre-doctoral fellowships. At the pre-doctoral level, the fellowship
provides a competitive personal salary up to but not including NHS consultant level, and a research training
support grant of up to £15,000 per year. This may cover such items as consumables, PhD fees, equipment,
conference travel, other course fees; however, each item must be separately costed and justified. Where
animals are requested for the project, funding may be sought separately from the research training support
grant. If the fellowship includes an element of research training outside the UK, overseas travel to the
training centre and living allowances may also be requested separately from the research training support
grant.
If you have started a PhD, you may apply for a fellowship only if, at the proposed start date, you have not
been registered for more than 12 months full-time. In this case, you may seek a standard award. However,
you must apply for funding at the pre-doctoral level. Payment of full economic costs is conditional on the
receipt of your PhD, and any FEC for the post-doctoral period of the award should be claimed at the end of
the fellowship. Please note it is your responsibility to provide documentary evidence of the PhD to support
any such claim. Predoctoral salaries will be paid up to, but not including, NHS consultant level.
The research fellowship provides the opportunity to spend time in an overseas research centre, a second
UK research centre or UK industrial centre. The aim is to provide a concentrated period of training that
could not be achieved as effectively within the academic host institution. We would normally support with
justification one visit, which may be no longer than 12 months. However, the Panel may agree to requests
for visits to more than one centre on the grounds of training needs. These should not be simply networking
visits. You should be prepared at interview to discuss in detail any visits proposed.
