PRESENTERS’ BIOGRAPHIES
Jean-Pierre Contzen
Graduated from "Ecole Polytechnique" of the University of Brussels as Mechanical &
Electrical Engineer with a post-graduate certificate in Nuclear Physics at same University,
Prof. Contzen currently holds positions as Chairman of the von Karman Institute of Fluid
Dynamics in Brussels, IST Chair and Invited Full Professor at the Instituto Superior Técnico
in Lisbon; and Chair of the Board of United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies.
He is also Co-President of the Nansen Scientific Foundation for Environment and Remote
Sensing in Saint Petersburg and Member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the
International Centre for Science and Technology in Moscow.
Mohammed Taeb received his PhD in agricultural biotechnology from Cambridge
University, UK. His career is a rich mix of experience in various capacities. He is currently
coordinating the “Science Policies for Sustainable Development” programme at the UNU-
IAS and his research interests are science policy and technology transfer, biotechnology,
biodiversity, MEAs, and science application for poverty alleviation.
Fumio Komoda graduated from Osaka City University in 1973 and received his Masters
Degree in 1975 and Doctors Degree in 1978 from Graduate School of Economics, Kyushu
University. His dissertation was on “Theory on International Technology Transfer”. His area
of interests include information science and genome & brain science to explore the unity of
social and natural science as seen in his recent publications such as “Economics with
Technology Paradigm”(1997) and “Science & Technology and Value”(2000).
Nobuto Iwata is a Professor of International Trade at the faculty of business administration,
Aoyama Gakuin University, Japan. He is also the Director of the WTO Research Center in
Aoyama Gakuin University. He studied Economics and Business administration at the
Waseda University in Tokyo. He received his Ph.D. with the thesis on Agricultural
negotiations under the GATT. Since 1988, he has been teaching “International Trade Theory”
and “WTO and Environment” at Aoyama Gakuin University and other universities in Tokyo,
Japan. His research interests include International Trade, Environment and WTO. He is a
member of The Japan Society of International Economics, The Japan Academy for Foreign
Trade, and International Association of Agricultural Economists.
Seizo Sumida received his Doctors Degree in Biochemistry from University of California in
1969. He has served as Manager of Biotechnology Research Laboratory and other post in
Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd from 1969-1991. He was also Principal Administrator for
Science and Technology Policy for OECD from 1991-1994. He joined Japan Bioindustry
Association in 1994 and became the Managing Director from 1999. He is now Director
General of JBA Research Institute since 2001.
Tateo Goto graduated from Faculty of Engineering, Yokohama National University in 1968,
majoring in applied chemistry. He served in Sumitomo Bakelite Company Ltd. for the
research on thermosetting resins. After working at the European counterpart company for four
and a half years and at the HQs as Director-General for Environmental Security and Recycle
Measures for three and a half years, he was transferred to JCII in 2001. Since then, he has
been working on the promotion of GSC (Green and Sustainable Chemistry) in JCII.
Morihiro Kurushima received his Masters Degree from the Kyoto University,
Graduate School of Engineering in 1976. He joined the then Ministry of International
Trade and Industry (MITI) in the same year. He served as Director General of the
Policy Planning Department of New Energy and Industrial Technology Development
Organization (NEDO) from 2001-2003 and now is Technical Councilor. He has been
a delegate member for Japan to the Conference of the Parties (COP) in the United
National Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) since November
1997. He took up the chair to the steering committee of the CTI/Industry Joint
Seminar on Technology Transfer to Cope with Climate Change (IEA/OECD) in
February 1998 and now is Secretary-General. He received “1997 Stratospheric Ozone
Protection Award” from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. He has been
Professor in the Department of Regional Studies at Toyo University since 2003. He is
a member of National Committee on Energy and Resources Engineering, Science
Council of Japan.
