David Klein, Ph.D., is the Director of Technology at the University of Iowa’s Law,
Health Policy and Disability Center (LHPDC) where he oversees the Center’s
implementation of technology and distance learning. He holds a Ph.D. in
Instructional Design and Technology and an M.A. in English. He has worked in
instructional technology and the development of computer-assisted instruction
since 1981. Prior to joining the LHPDC, Dr. Klein was a software developer in the
development of AT&T's Writer's Workshop Educational Package software, was
managing editor for Pico: Laptops & Portables magazine, taught classes in
English and computer-assisted instruction at Keene State College and the
University of Iowa, and was the principal developer for X-Plain patient education
software, currently viewable at NIH's MedlinePlus

Currently Dr. Klein is focusing on distance learning for rehabilitation professionals
and universal design, usability, and accessibility in Web development. In distance
learning, he led a team that created the online courses "Introduction to
Employment Services Training" and “Career Development” offered nationally by
the Region VII Community Rehabilitation Program--Regional Continuing
Education Program. He has published research studies on accessible websites
and recently is the co-author of “Accessible Technology and Corporate Culture at
Microsoft: A Methodological Note,” in Behavioral Sciences & the Law.

Dr. Klein heads a team of multimedia and web developers for the LHPDC
website, which features over 100 hours of accessible, captioned video and 75
hours of audio, as well as dynamic content, newsletters, and bulletin boards for
LHPDC federally and privately funded projects. He is also an adjunct faculty
member for the Instructional Design for Online Learning division at Capella
University. Dr. Klein is parent to several children who have disabilities, which
range from learning disabilities to Down Syndrome.

K. "Fritz" Thompson is an instructional designer and video producer at the
Law, Health Policy and Disability Center (LHPDC) with a background in library
science and language studies. He holds three degrees from the University of
Iowa, including an M.A. in Instructional Design and Technology, an M.L.S. in
Library and Information Science, and a B.A. in Spanish. Prior to working for the
LHPDC, Mr. Thompson served as the assistant manager of the InteractiveMedia
department of Iowa Public Television, where he worked on development of
interactive science education products for middle school students.

Mr. Thompson served as the lead for video production for several SSA-DOL
sponsored Disability Program Navigator trainings and other conferences. Mr.
Thompson is an expert on accessible web-based multimedia and has presented
several breakout sessions and workshops at national conferences on this topic.
He has been the lead video developer for the hours of accessible video and
audio deployed from the LHPDC website and via CD and DVD.
