• Format of the final examination

• Review
Available for office hours:

Make an appointment,
or drop by anytime and see if I
am available.
What can I bring to the Final?
• Dictionary

• The paper and notes on the paper. Any
paper (review or primary) you have
consulted, and notes on that paper.

• One textbook if you think that will help.
         Format of the final
• Essay/short answer
• Designed to be written in 2 hours but 3 are
  given.
• All answers must be in full sentences.
• All answers must answer the question
asked. If the extraneous material written
is wrong/inappropriate, marks will be lost.
• Answers must be written clearly, concisely
  and completely.
• Answers must be written in pen not pencil.
         Format of the final
• Excluded from the examination room are
  cell phones, laptops, and other
  communication devices.
                    Advice
• Read the question carefully and slowly.
• Write down an outline to your answer before
  writing the final answer.
• Look at the type of questions I have asked in
the past and see whether you can ask and
answer them on this paper before the exam.
• Forming a study group may be helpful.
• Remember I am no expert on the assigned
paper. I have only read this paper twice so far
and have set the exam. I can’t blindside you.
              What I can ask
• Anything in the paper: technical or
  intellectual.

• Anything in other papers that I deem
necessary for you to know in order to
understand what the authors have done.

• The key is to question your understanding of
the material in the paper. Approach your
  reading in a Socratic manner.
Review example 1
        Review example 2
• The following is figure 4 panel D from
  the Drosophila sexual behavior paper
  (paper 3).

• Explain the following panel in detail:
what is being shown, and how the data
supports the conclusion made from this
  data.

• Imagine what they have done.
Panel D of Figure 4 shows that females will mate with
male flies that are engineered to express female pheromones.
The female courtship index of fruC fruF fruM and fruDtra
females was assayed when mated with oeGAL4, UAStra,
and oeGAL4/UAStra males. The female courtship index
increased significantly with males that expressed female
pheromones. This evidence supports the author’s
conclusion the fru is a behavioral switch gene.
It is a picture of a girl or young women holding a
ferret. She is looking to her left and has big hands.
She is wearing an embroidered dress and a long
necklace.
Panel D of Figure 4 shows that females will mate with
male flies that are engineered to express female pheromones.
The female courtship index of fruC fruF fruM and fruDtra
females was assayed when mated with oeGAL4, UAStra,
and oeGAL4/UAStra males. What is the point of the layout of
the data in the figure? The female courtship index
increased significantly with males that expressed female
pheromones. This evidence supports the author’s
conclusion the fru is a behavioral switch gene.

Panel D of Figure 4 shows that females will mate with

How does this engineering work; what are its principles?

I guess it would be helpful if you had looked up
Ferveur et al., 1997. The answer is kind of neat.
Good Luck
