Students enrolled in the biology lab courses for 2002-3 were asked for feedback. Online labs, First Steps Voluntary survey at the end of semester. Student response concerning the pre- labs was good. I redid every one of them and understood what all the rest of the material was saying.” •“My comments are i honestly think that it helps to visually see things in the pre-labs prior to actually doing them.” •“Any prelab experiment that was the exact same as the one we did in class was very beneficial. Online labs Student comments were good. •“IT WAS GOOD TO BE ABLE TO WORK AT YOUR OWN PACE. ” •“You don't have to go to class, you can do the experiments whenever you can fit them in, and the work is basically up to you, which helps for independence.” •“THIS WAS A GREAT COURSE, AT FIRST I WAS CONFUSED ON HOW WE WOULD DO LABS ONLINE. IT TUURNED OUT THAT IT WAS VERY EFFECTIVE THOUGH..” Online labs Student comments were good. •“I could complete the work at my own pace in my own dorm. I liked that a lot •“You can do experiments in your underwear.” •“The class had too many assignments due all at one time.” •“The biggest advantage was that there wasn't a certian time you had to go to the lab. You can redo the labs before quizzes, and on weekends if you need to.” •“the labs could be completed when i had time to do them i liked the span of time they could be done it made it easier to fit into my schedule.” Online labs Student comments were good. • “I really believe that the professor used great methods in our lab assignments. However, I thought that some of the graphs that we prepared really required more of a prerequisite class in Excel. I hadn't used the Excel program very much, & I was stressed out by the time I figured out how to get the correct answers into the spreadsheet & charts. Overall, I enjoyed the class, & learned a lot about each respective subject(for each week). Even though the Excel Charts/spreadsheets/graphs wore me out, it was a valuable learning experience that I will be able to use in the future!” Online Labs: A look at virtual laboratories.
