Major General Larry W. Shellito is the
Adjutant General of the Minnesota National Guard. He
assumed his responsibilities on November 3, 2003.
General Shellito earned two bachelor’s degrees in Business
Administration & Accounting and Distributive Education
from Moorhead State College. He later earned his master’s
degree in Business Education from that college and a
doctorate in education from the University of Minnesota.
General Shellito began his military career when he enlisted
in the active-duty Army in 1968. He received his
commission as a second lieutenant in 1969 and initially
served as a tactical officer at the Officer Candidate Brigade,
Ft. Benning, Georgia. In 1970, he went to Vietnam as a
Mobile Advisory Team Senior Advisor.
In 1971, Shellito returned from Vietnam and left the military for two years. In 1973, he enlisted
in the Minnesota Army National Guard. He was assigned as a Mortar Platoon Leader for
Company A, 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry.
Over the next 13 years, Shellito served in many capacities in two Army National Guard
battalions, the 1st Battalion, 136th Infantry and the 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry, both of which
were located in western and central Minnesota. He served as company commander and battalion
operations officer and battalion executive officer in 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry, and as battalion
operations officer and battalion executive officer in 1st Battalion, 136th Infantry during that time.
In 1986, he was assigned as the operations officer, 1st Brigade, 47th Infantry Division. He was
then reassigned as the assistant operations officer, 47th Infantry Division until August 1987.
At that time, he was assigned as battalion commander for 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry.
After two years as battalion commander, Shellito was assigned as the operations officer, 47th
Infantry Division (which was later designated as the 34th Infantry Division). He then served as
the commander, 1st Brigade, 34th ID. In 1994, he was assigned as the commander of 84th Troop
Command. He was promoted to brigadier general in 1996, and was assigned as the Assistant
Adjutant General (Plans and Operations), HQ, Minnesota Army National Guard. In 1998, he
was assigned as one of the Assistant Division Commanders – Maneuver for the 34th Infantry
Division, and from September 2000 to September 2004, Shellito was assigned as division
commander, 34th Infantry Division.
Shellito’s awards and decorations include: the Army Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of
Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the
Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, the Army Achievement Medal, the
Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters, the National
Defense Service Medal with one Bronze Star, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars,
the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with one Hour Glass Device, the Army Service Ribbon, the
Army Reserve Components Overseas Training Ribbon, the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross
with one Bronze Star, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, the Combat Infantryman’s
Badge and the Parachute Badge.
He is a graduate of the US Command and General Staff College and the US Army War College.
Before his appointment as Adjutant General, Shellito served as President of Alexandria
Technical College, Alexandria, Minnesota.
