Albuquerque, NM
SCSEP Goes Green Community Day: October 25, 2010

Local Green Job Demand/Economic Activity
Opportunities abound with green building and sustainable agriculture in New Mexico.
     Workforce Investment Act
o Green does not appear to be a priority, so there is potential for involvement and improvement:
                   www.nmjustice.net/nmsc/juvenile/program.php?id=597
 South Valley Economic Development Center: www.svedc.org/
o The Mission of the South Valley Economic Development Center is to provide facilities, resources,
and training to support the development of new and expanding small businesses that will create
jobs and foster economic revitalization of the South Valley community, while preserving the
heritage and culture of the community. And (relevant to sustainable agriculture job pathway) offer
flexible leases on office space, a fully-equipped commercial kitchen, and comprehensive business
                   support for small businesses.
     Mentoring
            o Older farmers , future farmers: www.localfoodnm.org/
            o YDI – Youth Development Inc.: www.ydinm.org/public/Main.aspx
                        Mentoring youth on construction
There is local evidence of Green Building Activity: Through the Green Path Program the City of Albuquerque
issued Executive Order Number 20 which enacts adopting the Architecture 2030 Challenge
(www.architecture2030.org) targets for new municipal projects, and numerous buildings are certified at various
levels of green.
There is local evidence of Sustainable Agriculture Activity: Farmer’s markets, community supported
agriculture (CSAs), and small-batch value-added products demonstrate a local movement of sustainable agriculture
and sustainable food systems. Threats include a very tough market – small farmers often are shoved out, and land
issues threaten agricultural areas. Existing jobs include retail positions as food cooperatives and local foods
restaurants. There is a real need for mentoring of young future farmers, which provides a leadership opportunity for
older workers with agricultural experience.
Identified Occupations: Competency Models, Career Lattices, and Job Information are included in the summary
for each of the following occupations:
     Weatherization
     Green Healthcare Administrative Support
     Sustainable Agriculture Enterprise Specialist

Albuquerque, NM: Green Healthcare Administrative Support
Due to the very active and growing healthcare industry in the state, including increased construction of healthcare
facilities, this occupation was identified by the attendees as a very applicable pathway that bridges healthcare and
construction. The attendees identified that the pathway should include opportunities for both individuals with
“people person” skills, outreach, public relations, or sales emphases and data-oriented workers including
bookkeepers and technical specialists. While the “ideal” position would be with a design build firm specializing in
green healthcare construction, the pathway includes additional opportunities with healthcare providers, product
 suppliers, or independent consultants.

Attendees noted that the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce offers free computer classes (as does Goodwill!).
Toastmasters would also offer participants relevant skill development for the “people person” positions within this
pathway. Potential partners include BuildGreen New Mexico and the New Mexico Chapter of the U.S. Green
Building Council. GreenDrinks events provide an opportunity to meet green industry professionals. Bilingual skills
are also a valuable component of this pathway.
