Minutes for September 3, 2008 Meeting

President Bob Trump called the meeting to order [You have to give him credit, he tried.]
at 6:35PM. The following persons were present: Rex Beistle, Sheridan Beistle, Rich
Bray, Jim Carlton, Don Davis, Richard Dietz, Jack Ford, Gordon Goff, Jack Heier, Steve
Klett, Mark Lorenz, John McCarthy, Harry Menke, Jim Mount, Ed Mularz, Ray Nieder,
Lynn Patten, Jim Thompson, John Thut, Robert Trumbull, Bob Trump, Laura Trump, and
Don Widrig.

Kurtis Kelly and Mark Riffle, from the Estes Park Public Library staff, thanked the
members for their gift which made it possible for the library to purchase the new
overhead projector system for the Hondius room.

Rex Beistle reported on the work of the Colorado Railroad Museum’s work on rebuilding
RGS Engine Number 20. This 4-6-0 unit, which last operated in 1951, is being rebuilt at
the Strasburg Railroad Steam Shop, thanks to an initial anonymous gift of $400,000.00.
In addition, another anonymous donor has encouraged railroad buffs with a challenge
grant, which will match funds up to an additional $250,000.00. If you are interested in
helping to fund this important restoration, please check the club’s web site for details on
where to send your gift. Rex also reported a “Goose Fest” with Goose Numbers 2, 6, and
7 scheduled for November at the Museum. Again, please check the club’s web site for
details.

The approval of the August Minutes were moved by Jim Mount, seconded by Rich Bray,
and passed without dissent [Yes, without dissent!].

Treasurer Robert Trumbull reported on the club’s financial status. Ed Mularz made a
motion to compensate Harry Menke $298.00 for his rolling stock in the Brit Rail layout;
Jack Heier seconded the motion and it passed “unanimously, except for one dissenter.”

Jim Mount reported on the progress of Rails in the Rockies [RIR] for 2009. Everything
is on track except for our usual problems with the reluctance of the Holiday Inn to
finalize and sign the contract. Jim asked each member to distribute some of the ten
thousand flyers for the RIR Show.

Bob Trump reminded the members about the memorial service for Bill Scott at the
Methodist Church on September 13. The club will send a nice flower arrangement.

John McCarthy has asked for help in planning his layout. Please see the detail sheet
posted with the minutes. Proposals are due at our October 1st meeting. Amazing prizes
will be awarded for the most helpful and creative entries. [Let it be noted that President
Bob Trump would not divulge the names of the judges for this contest.] Please send your
contest entries to Robert Trumbull or bring them to the October 1, 2008 meeting for
display and discussion. Final entries must be submitted before October 31, 2008 to Bob
Trump or Robert Trumbull. The winners will be announced at the November 5 meeting
and prizes will be awarded for First, Second, and Third. This is also our contest night and
Fall swap meet. As usual, substantial prizes for the winning entries. Be there.

Jim Thompson reported on the arrangements for setting up the Brit Rail layout for the
Scottish Festival which will run September 5-7.

The business portion of the meeting was adjourned at 7:45PM. Following excellent
refreshments provided by Laura Trump, Jim Mount presented a first rate program. Jim’s
program consisted of an excellent movie that Jim took and narrated showing a narrow
gauge Consolidation locomotive D &RGW #315 being moved, hooked up to it’s tender,
and being steamed up at Chama, NM. The size comparison between the #315
Consolidation and the K-36 Consolidation (both 3 foot gauge) is amazing and Jim’s
photography is allows us to see the kind of details we all love. Jim has generously
volunteered to allow the club to make copies of his movie, and distribute them as a
reward to everyone that helps at Scottishfest. Thanks Jim. for a great movie and a great
reward. Jims movie was the first movie to be shown on the new overhead projection
system donated to the library by our club. Our club can be very proud of the new system
and it’s capabilities.

Respectfully submitted,

Jack Ford, Secretary,
EVMR
