The N-word is degrading, insulting and the most vicious racial slur in the American
English language states its critics. All African Americans should never use the N-word for any
reason but pop culture and other justifiable reasons will keep the N-word alive. It’s a term of
endearment that supposedly started in the 1960s says it supporters and defenders to take the
meaning or should I say the racist way in which it was being used by whites and to give the
power of the N-word to use in a unique and special way to blacks.
The NAACP held a mock funeral in July 2007 to bury the N-word and to put it to
death. Then Mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick said and I quote “"Die, n-word, and we don't
want to see you 'round here no more.
Many of the opponents of the N-word say that its hurtful and no matter what
since it has been a word that has caused so many blacks to die and feel belittled and
disgraced and the racist overt use over the centuries has inflicted so much oppression
that the N-word should have faded out. You have various individuals and groups that
are keeping it alive and as defenders of the N-word which is short for “Nigger” say
organizations like the NAACP are misguided and puritanical.
In July 2007 a survey was taken regarding the use of the N-word and 53% of the
people said it was extremely offensive, just to show how demeaning it is to use this
word. Pop culture in African American communities use the N-word in its music,
entertainment, writing and movies but some well-known blacks such as Bill Crosby has
have argued that the continued use of the n-word by low-income black youths serves
only to exacerbate their marginal status in society.
Now from my perspective in reading the article I totally agreed with the burying of
the N-word in its totality, and agree that the N-word should die. The use of the N-word
was meant to harm and make the black slaves feel inferior and whether you were a free
black or non-free black slave it is oppressive. I’m against the use no matter free
speech or not. I also disagree with the use of the N-word just because in the black
community it is a form of endearment towards one another. Not for all blacks and I
commend Bill Cosby and others who say it marginalized the young black youths
whether they are low-income or lives in the suburbs, because they use the N-word in
those other communities also.
Hate speech in any form should not be tolerated because its ones constitutional
right to say so in my humble opinion. I believe they should revisit the United States
Constitution and rewrite it for today’s time and people. Many people and cultures, races
and individuals have died, bleed and lost their God given right as a man and women
because of free speech and hate crimes. We live in a Democratic Country hate speech
is not tolerated as much, as it once was. Due to the fact that laws and especially the
Civil Rights Movement long before Martin Luther King made it clear that hate speech
and free speech had to be dealt with at the highest of levels the United States Supreme
Courts, by brave men and women and groups and families. Even though many hate
groups such as the KKK and other hate groups use the free speech as getting their
message across, the message of love and love thy neighbor as thyself is a way to curb
hate speeches in this 21st Century.
