Visual Rhetoric Presentation By: Elliott Shipley
This picture conveys the blending
of cultures that is presently
occurring in the world today.
The simple subjects present a
larger and more controversial
topic of whether the integration
of the cultures has a positive or
The audience really pertains to anyone
because integration is occurring
everywhere and has already occurred
in most places.
Think about how noodles have
become such a staple in so many
dishes in several cultures.
Think about the statement this makes
in a truly Asian culture versus a
The focus is the fork and knife,
they are black which contrasts
heavily with the white.
They are also very large and the
angle make them become the
emphasis because they are not
being used in the way they are
typically used. Instead they are
being used like chopsticks used in
some Asian cultures.
-the focus and all the subject of the picture is in the
foreground, the hand holding the fork and knife has
the main significance so it’s in the front and is also the
-the background is bland white which make the
colors and subjects of the drawing pop, because the
font is so small with the word integration it seems as
if it is in the background.
-the picture is omitting what the person looks like,
it omits what is being eaten besides the few
strands of what seems to be pasta
The irony of this picture is
that the fork and knife are
being used as chopsticks.
The person using them could
just as easily use them to eat
the noodles that are shown
but they instead modify how
to use the utensils.
This drawing symbolizes the “mixing”
and intertwining that is occurring in the
world today between cultures.
The fork and knife look very
westernized and look like a type you
would use with fast food.
They are being used like chopsticks
however showing the mix of the east
and west, even the noodles can be a
source of integration because so many
cultures use them in different ways.
Color- color is very important because it helps
put emphasis on certain objects and helps
symbolize as well.
The hands are a blue color so that they are
generic and don’t represent a certain race.
The black on the utensils draw the audience to
the fork and knife and the noodles are yellow to
add a little color and to also represent a typical
The white in the background provides for a
good backdrop to help contrast the large
objects and purpose of the picture
Emphasis- the emphasis is placed on the fork
and knife because of the size and shape, they
are extremely dark with the black and are at
an angle that catches your eye
Font size- the font size is important because
it doesn’t take away from the picture by it
being small however it is big enough and by
itself so that the point gets across and so it’s
easier to read
Line- the lines of the picture are important
because they make the hand more realistic
and help create a contrast between the
smooth lines of the hands to the sharp lines
of the fork and knife.
Logic- This applies to our logic because
it concerns the changes in cultures
Emotions- This picture touches our
emotions by giving us a feeling of either
positive or negative emotions towards
the mixing of cultures.
Ethic- The picture can be related to our
ethic because it portrays the different
backgrounds and aspects of cultures.
WHY DO YOU THINK THE PERSON
DECIDED TO HAVE THE HAND BLUE?
WHAT ARE YOU VIEWS ON
INTEGRATION OF CULTURES?
WHAT ARE SOME ASPECTS OF
CULTURES THAT WE SEE BLENDED
DO YOU THINK THE WORLD WILL
EVER GET A POINT WHERE THERE IS
