George P. Kalv, Gamma Beta ‘47 has made
history by establishing the first named permanent
fund within the Theta Tau Educational
Foundation. Over the last couple years, Brother
Kalv has contributed substantial sums to the
Foundation that have been set aside in a separate
fund in his name to finance the scholarships for
student members of Theta Tau in perpetuity. A
portion of the interest/ investment income from
that permanent fund will be used to advance
these scholarship goals for our Fraternity, thus
preserving the principal in the fund.
Since the establishment of the Foundation
in 1998, scholarship funds have come from the
annual operating income of the Foundation. These scholarships will, of course,
continue; however, the George P. Kalv Fund, and ones like it established in the years
ahead, will enable a greater level of support for engineering students across the
nation.
Nearly Bro. Kalv’s entire professional career was with The Haskell Company
which ranks among the foremost firms in design-build projects. Haskell provides
complete architectural, engineering, construction, real estate and facility
management services on a single-responsibility (“turnkey”) basis. The company’s
projects include manufacturing plants, distribution centers, medical facilities, low-
temperature structures, office buildings, hotels and resorts, parking structures and
institutional facilities. The geographical scope of Haskell’s work spans the Western
Hemisphere, including Canada, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
Brother Kalv was born in Omsk, Siberia shortly after the Russian Revolution.
He attended the City College of New York before transferring to The George
Washington University in DC. His education at GWU was interrupted by World War
II, but he eventually completed his education thereafter and graduated in 1947 with
his electrical engineering degree. He moved to Florida shortly after graduation from
GWU and worked for many years at the Haskell Company. Nearly his last decade
there was as Senior Electrical Engineer, and he retired in 1983.
