					TSUNAMI!
              That’s Fast

• Can you believe that a tsunami can speed
across the ocean as fast as a jet airplane?
• It can go at 500 miles an hour!

• Now that’s fast!
    The Ring of
       Fire
 Most of the tsunamis happen within “The
Ring of Fire.” Which is where a lot of
  earthquakes happen.
 The earthquakes trigger the dangerous
  tsunami.
                That’s Strange

• In the deep waters tsunamis are only a few feet
high. Although when they reach the shore their
  height and energy increases.
   The Vacuum Effect

• Usually before a tsunami
hits a sort of vacuum effect
  happens, and the water is
  sucked from harbors and
  beaches.
• You can see the bottom
  filled with fish and even
  boats.
                   DEADLY!

• Tsunamis have killed over 50,000 people in just the
  past century!
• Scientists fortunately established a Pacific
Tsunami Warning System to save lives.
            The Name

• Tsunami is a Japanese word that
  means “Great harbor wave”.
• even though they are sometimes
  called “tidal waves” they have
  nothing to with the tide.
             WAVES

 When a wave hits land: first
    the water drops greatly, then
    usually another wave blasts
    ashore after about 15
    minutes, then another ,and
    another for about two hours
    or even more!
     Explosion
 The most deadly tsunami
that we know of in history
    was after the eruption of
    Indonesia's Krakatod
    Volcano in 1883. About 36,000
    people died from the
    eruption. Most of them
    from the tsunami.
