principal while Mrs. Delawder was home on maternity leave. We discovered that not only is Mr.
Henzie a terrific PE teacher but he is also a very admirable administrative designee! During our
first few months of school we were able to witness (with bated breath) our 6th graders transition
from elementary folk to well adjusted secondary school students. Ms. Britney Hubbard directed our
very first comedic one act play which, of course had rave reviews, while Mr. Wakelin, our music

                             PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Welcome CMS Cougars,

I hope that your school year is off to a great start! My name is Tammie Licari and I am the
2011-2012 PTSA President. CMS PTSA is a volunteer organization of Parents, Teacher’s and Student’s working
together to improve the education and well being of all children.

For parents, finding the best ways to help your child navigate the challenges of school life can be frustrating. The
good news is that even a small gesture can make a difference. Although they may not always show it, children look
to their parents for guidance. Talking to your kids about school and keeping track of their academic and social life
can really help. By attending school events, you show your child that school is a important part of your family’s
life. When parents get involved in their children’s education, good things happen.

Whether your child is a timid kindergartner or an independent 8th grader, you have an important role to play this
school year. Please take the time to show your support by investing in your PTSA today. I look forward too sharing
smiles, laughs and memories with our school this year.

Tammie Licari
PTSA President

The Counseling staff wishes all of our families a Happy and Safe Holiday.

The semester ends on December 22, the last day before winter break. Report cards will be mailed out on January
13. If you don’t receive them by the following week, please call your child’s counselor. There are many
interventions for students who are struggling to get passing grades. Please call the counselors to register your
students for this help. Eighth grade students need pass their classes in order to be able to go through promotion
activities.

Many 8th grade parents have been calling in about the high school their child will be attending. We are scheduled
to attend Valencia High School. In February your child will bring home registration papers for Valencia High
School. It is very important that you fill out the paper work and return it in a timely manner. This assures your
child of being in the Hart District system. If students want to go to another high school, they will need to fill out
Intra-district transfers. These will be available in the middle school office in February. West Ranch is only
accepting students who have siblings going to their high school.
In March the counselors from Valencia will be coming to register the 8th graders for their next year’s classes. If
you have any questions please call Mrs. Rocke.

If you have questions about your child, please contact their counselor.

                                             OFFICE

To report an absence, please call our Attendance Office at (661) 257-4550 x2100. An absence is considered a
truancy if it does not meet the California Education Code guidelines for an “excused” absence. Per new CUSD
policy, all absence must be cleared within 5 days school days; those absences not cleared will remain a truancy.

Thank you,

                                BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION
Dear Castaic Middle School Parents,

My name is Sheila Faggiano and I’m the volunteer Box Tops coordinator at Castaic Middle School.

Castaic Middle School hosted its first Box Tops for Education contest, which ran from September 6th thru October
28th. The contest was between all grade levels 6th, 7th and 8th.

Congratulations to the entire 7th Grade class for winning the 1st annual Box Tops for
Education contest. Good Job!
Box Tops is all about the difference 1 can make. This year, our goal is to raise $500 or more for our school. Here are
five easy, everyday ways you can help:

Clip — Clip the Box Top from hundreds of participating products and send them to school. Each one is worth 10¢ when
our school redeems them from Box Tops for Education.

Shop online — Shop at your favorite online stores through the Box Tops Marketplace®
(boxtops4education.com/marketplace). Up to 15% of your qualifying purchase total is automatically donated to our
school, at no additional cost to you. Plus, you’ll get exclusive Box Tops deals and discounts!

Read — Buy books online through the Reading Room, a partnership between Box Tops and Barnes and Noble. Our
school receives up to 6% of qualifying purchases.

My Class Essentials™ –– This is a free online registry to help classrooms get the learning tools they need. Our school
earns a 2% cash donation with every qualifying purchase.

Sign up –– It’s easy and free. Sign up to support our school at boxtops4education.com, where you can:

• See how much our school is earning with Box Tops
• Enter online promotions for chances to win Bonus Box Tops and other prizes
• Print money-saving coupons for your favorite Box Tops brands
• Make mealtime easier with family-pleasing recipes

You can also sign up for Box Tops email newsletters that will keep you updated on the program, and for Marketplace
newsletters with Box Tops members-only deals and discounts.

To learn more, visit boxtops4education.com—and thanks for choosing to make a difference for our school with Box
Tops!
