CASTAIC MIDDLE SCHOOL
Principal Principal’s Notes
Matt Henzie Publishing our first semester newsletter allows us to reflect upon all the wonderful experiences and
Assistant accomplishments which have occurred between August and December 2011 at Castaic Middle
Principals School….We made new friends, such as Mrs. Stephanie Wells, who became our interim assistant
principal while Mrs. Delawder was home on maternity leave. We discovered that not only is Mr.
Henzie a terrific PE teacher but he is also a very admirable administrative designee! During our
first few months of school we were able to witness (with bated breath) our 6th graders transition
from elementary folk to well adjusted secondary school students. Ms. Britney Hubbard directed our
very first comedic one act play which, of course had rave reviews, while Mr. Wakelin, our music
director extraordinaire along with our choir and band performed their annual holiday concert to a
In This Issue: standing room only house filled with proud parents. Our band joined Valencia High School during
a football rally while our AVID students traveled to California State University, Northridge. Our
CMS TV students along with Mr. Osano are feverishly fundraising for the annual STN convention
which is being held in Texas next spring while are National Junior Honor Society students are

**** As we publish are first semester newsletter, I would like to take a moment to say thank you to all of
Counselor's Corner our wonderful faculty and staff for your dedication and hard work. To our parents and CMS
community members, we would not be as successful without your integral support. I wish each and
everyone a wonderful holiday break and a very happy new year!

PTSA PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Welcome CMS Cougars,
I hope that your school year is off to a great start! My name is Tammie Licari and I am the
2011-2012 PTSA President. CMS PTSA is a volunteer organization of Parents, Teacher’s and Student’s working
together to improve the education and well being of all children.
For parents, finding the best ways to help your child navigate the challenges of school life can be frustrating. The
good news is that even a small gesture can make a difference. Although they may not always show it, children look
to their parents for guidance. Talking to your kids about school and keeping track of their academic and social life
can really help. By attending school events, you show your child that school is a important part of your family’s
life. When parents get involved in their children’s education, good things happen.
Whether your child is a timid kindergartner or an independent 8th grader, you have an important role to play this
school year. Please take the time to show your support by investing in your PTSA today. I look forward too sharing
smiles, laughs and memories with our school this year.

The Counseling staff wishes all of our families a Happy and Safe Holiday.
The semester ends on December 22, the last day before winter break. Report cards will be mailed out on January
13. If you don’t receive them by the following week, please call your child’s counselor. There are many
interventions for students who are struggling to get passing grades. Please call the counselors to register your
students for this help. Eighth grade students need pass their classes in order to be able to go through promotion
Many 8th grade parents have been calling in about the high school their child will be attending. We are scheduled
to attend Valencia High School. In February your child will bring home registration papers for Valencia High
School. It is very important that you fill out the paper work and return it in a timely manner. This assures your
child of being in the Hart District system. If students want to go to another high school, they will need to fill out
Intra-district transfers. These will be available in the middle school office in February. West Ranch is only
accepting students who have siblings going to their high school.
In March the counselors from Valencia will be coming to register the 8th graders for their next year’s classes. If
you have any questions please call Mrs. Rocke.
If you have questions about your child, please contact their counselor.
FROM THE CMS ATTENDANCE
To report an absence, please call our Attendance Office at (661) 257-4550 x2100. An absence is considered a
truancy if it does not meet the California Education Code guidelines for an “excused” absence. Per new CUSD
policy, all absence must be cleared within 5 days school days; those absences not cleared will remain a truancy.
