Career Fair Survival Guide
ate, land an interview, and then, hopefully, secure a job or an internship. Who Should Come to the Fair? Everyone! Looking for a job or internship? This is the place for you. Wondering about future career options? Explore opportunities at the fair. Not yet graduating or searching? Come anyway! Often, the connections you make as a first year or second year student can turn into internship and job opportunities later on. What Can I Do to Make Myself Stand Out at the Fair? Great question! It’s best to familiarize yourself with the companies before the fair by reading their websites and doing a bit of research to develop informed questions. Have your resume critiqued by the folks at the OCC during walk-in hours from 10am-3pm, daily. Dress professionally. It’s important to remember that first impressions count. Finally, don’t be afraid of the recruiter! They attend these fairs to meet candidates and develop recruiting relationships with students like YOU! What Should I Say to a Recruiter? Have a 20-30 second introduction prepared. For example, “Hi, I’m Jessie. I’m a sophomore biology major and I was reading on your website that you have internships in environmental research. I would love to learn more about these opportunities.” At that point, the recruiter will likely take over the conversation, but it’s important to have a few questions that you can ask to demonstrate your interest in the organization. Some examples are included below. Make sure to drop off your resume, if appropriate, and get a business card. Employers always appreciate a thank you note! Any Other Advice? Keep an open mind. The real world doesn’t divide itself by college majors. An engineering or information technology company is just as likely to have non-tech jobs or internships as it is technical positions.
