Initial Eligibility Standards for
College Athletics

Pick up in the guidance office this power point
handout and the following two packets that were
distributed at the annual NCAA Workshop on
September 13, 2011 that include the:
– List of LHS approved courses by NCAA
– NCAA eligibility standards
– Division I and II worksheets
– Tips for monitoring your initial eligibility
progress
– List of frequently asked NCAA questions
– Recruiting definitions
– List of questions for special education students
Core Courses
Division I
16 Core Courses:
4 years of English
3 years of math (Algebra 1, Geom, and
Algebra 2)
2 years of science
1 year of additional English/math/science
2 years of social studies
4 years of additional courses (from above
subjects or from foreign language)
Core Courses, cont.
Division II
14 Core Courses:
3 years of English
2 years of math (Algebra 1 and higher)
2 years of science (1 year must be lab)
2 years of additional English, math, or
science
2 years of social studies
3 years of additional courses from above
list or from foreign language
Beginning August, 2013, 16 core
courses are required
Grade Point Average
Only core courses (academic courses) are used for the
calculation of the GPA
Only NCAA-approved core courses for LHS
on their Eligibility web site are
used in the GPA calculation

LHS Course Numbers
Standard (College Prep) courses
are approved by NCAA
00133 – 2nd number from end
must be a 3 = standard level
All Honors and AP courses are
approved
00143 – Honors English 9
00453 – AP English (grade
12)
LHS Course Numbers, cont.
Very few essential level courses are
approved by NCAA
00223 – English 10 (essential level)
38023 – Biology (essential level)
92623 – Algebra 1 (special ed
class at essential level)
All special ed classes are at the essential
level. Call your guidance counselor if you
are unsure of levels of past years’ courses.
Approved LHS Core Courses
Each winter, during scheduling week,
check to make sure that the courses you
select for the following year are on the
NCAA Eligibility Center list of approved
LHS courses.
Then double check again as each school
year begins to make sure students are
taking NCAA approved courses at LHS.
Test Scores
Division I: sliding scale (page 2 of packet)
The higher your GPA, the lower the minimum
test score can be to qualify
For example, 3.00 GPA and min. 620
combined critical reading and math scores
Division II: No sliding scale
Need an SAT minimum of 820,
from combined Critical Reading and
math scores
(SAT writing score not used)

Applying for NCAA Eligibility
Begin during your junior year of high school
Create your account & PIN number online
Take your SAT Reasoning Test in the spring of
junior year and repeat in fall of senior year
Print out the 2-page NCAA form that requests
our transcript and bring to guidance office
Check online to see the status of application
Request final transcript at graduation be sent to
both your college and NCAA
