             NATIONAL FRAMEWORK DESCRIPTORS FOR
                      REGISTERED NURSE1

Registered Nurses
Registered Nurses utilise nursing knowledge, reflective practice and professional judgement to
provide competent care and advice in health promotion, maintenance and restoration of health,
preventative care, rehabilitation, and care of the terminally ill. This occurs in a range of settings with
individuals or groups (NCNZ, 2001b).


The Expert Registered Nurse:
           Guides others to implement culturally safe practice to clients and apply the principles of Te
            Tiriti o Waitangi
           Engages in Post Graduate level education (or equivalent)
           Contributes to specialty knowledge
           Acts as a role model and leader
           Demonstrates innovative practice
           Is responsible for clinical learning/development of colleagues
           Initiates and guides quality improvement activities
           Initiates and guides changes in the practice setting
           Is recognised as an expert in her/his area of practice
           Influences at a service, professional or organisational level
           Acts as an advocate in the promotion of nursing in the health care team
           Delivers quality client care in unpredictable challenging situations
           Is involved in resource decision making/strategic planning
           Acts as leader for nursing work unit/facility

8.             Post graduate education relevant Level 8, or equivalence in education and practice
               Postgraduate Certificates, Diplomas and Masters Degree all meet this requirement.
               For equivalence not meeting this criteria, please apply separately prior to submitting your
               portfolio at expert level. For more information, go to http://www.cdhb.govt.nz/pdrp/equivalence

           Evidence should include:
              Post registration experience and education relevant to current area of practice which
              impacts on practice at expert level

               Changes in attitudes and skills which have occurred as a result of this

               Demonstration of expert practice, critical analysis and reflection consistently in nursing
               practice and evidence throughout portfolio evidence

Expert Level of Practice Requirements
Evidence of achievement of the specific Expert requirements / indicators may be evidenced in standard
requirements, e.g. performance appraisal. If so, NO ADDITIONAL evidence is required*.
*If it is not, then separate statements validated by line manager should be provided of the following:

    This section outlines suitable forms of evidence used in the assessment of Nursing Council’s (2007) Competencies for the Registered Nurse
     Scope of Practice. As a legal requirement of practice, you must demonstrate competency to the Nursing Council of New Zealand in order to
     receive your Annual Practising Certificate.

    Some templates have been developed to assist you in this process (also refer to Internet site under PDRP).

 Instructions
    All documentation within your portfolio should be appropriately numbered.

 N. B. Please remember the privacy of others and ensure that there are no identifying names or NHI numbers in case studies,
 documentation or exemplars. Patient notes, nursing care plans and referrals are not to be included as evidence.
    One piece of evidence may apply to several competencies (remember to include its number in each relevant competency domain).

    Column B has been developed as possible suggested forms of evidence you may wish to utilise. However, please do include any
     other evidence you consider to be relevant.

    Please complete Column C with the appropriate examples. Please indicate which evidence you are submitting.

    Please use Column D to reference your assessor to the appropriate page in your Portfolio.
