Beyond Bourdieu – Habitus, Capital & Social Stratification

Department of Sociology, University of Copenhagen is hereby calling for papers for the conference Beyond Bourdieu. The con-
ference will assemble international researchers from within the broad field of social analysis that contribute to the develop-
ment of critical sociology following the footsteps of Pierre Bourdieu.
The conference will include presentations of contemporary social research that relates to the main concepts of Bourdieu’s the-
ory, focusing on theoretical methodological elaborations of the concepts as well as empirical analysis of social stratification.
The thematic profile of the conference is framed by four empirical themes that comply with a wide range of social stratifica-
tion processes in modern welfare states. The four main themes of the conference are: “Education”, “Health”, “Marginaliza-
tion” and “Power”. Researchers working within these areas (or related areas relevant for social stratification analysis) are re-
commended to send in their abstracts.
Papers inspired by the conceptual framework of Bourdieu will be prioritized.
Conference form: A mix of plenary lectures by Derek Robbins (University of East London), Alan Warde (University of
Manchester), Frédéric Lebaron (Université de Picardie Jules Verne) and Clare Farrell (National Council for Special Education
in Ireland) and thematically organized sessions with paper presentations, followed by lectures’ and participants’ discussion of

The 25 papers to be presented at the conference will be elected by the organizers and notifications will be mailed out to all
participants on October 2nd 2009.
Final deadline for papers is November 2nd 2009
Papers to be presented at the conference should not exceed 20-25 pages (app. 8.000 words) and must be at our disposal by
November 2nd 2009.
Presenters should expect to be asked to act as discussants.
